OF FATHER DAVIS: FROM THE DESK OF o give testimony. That is what Saint John the Baptist T did in his day and for us even today. He gave eyewitness testimony to Jesus Christ. He was related to him. He knew him. He baptized him. He saw the heavens open up above him. He heard him speak. He looked into his eyes. His encounter with Christ gave rise to ardent feelings of fulfillment, as John saw the hopes of Israel realized in Jesus. John s words are significant. They give quite a testimony! Who has given testimony to us about our faith in Jesus? Have you ever thought about how you came to have the faith in him that you have? Perhaps parents, grandparents, relatives, favorite teachers, priests, or nuns; maybe even fellow parishioners, neighbors, or friends along the journey of life.many have inspired in us faith in Christ Jesus. Our spiritual life story can reveal many insights into our faith in the Lord, and his desire to be part of our lives. The witness and testimony of others has often been powerful. By the same token, it is also important to consider how we (ourselves) have given testimony to Jesus. Has each of us been a catalyst of faith in the lives of someone else? What kind of living testimony to Jesus have we been offering to those around us by the quality and caliber of our own lives? If we have been fickle, lukewarm, or casual in our practice of the faith and our witness to Christ, maybe we should examine that, and increase the effectiveness of our lived testimony of faith in the Lord. It is a daily decision to live for Jesus. It is a daily decision to live distinctively (with Gospel values) in a world that so often lives as if God does not exist. If you were the only one who believed in Christ in your home, workplace, or neighborhood, would your testimony persuade anyone to believe in Jesus? If not, what could you do to stir the flame of authentic discipleship and witness? Our lives of Catholics take on impact value by the way in which we use our time, our talents, and our treasure for the Kingdom of Christ. If we do so in ways which demonstrate the priority of Christ s Kingdom, our witness will be strong. If we don t live in a way that shows our distinctive faith in the Lord, how will it be evident that we are members of his body, the Church? Although the words we say about our treasured faith in Jesus have a significant value, so does our style of life, and the choices that we make which may or may not promote the faith. Saint Francis of Assisi once said, preach all the time, and if necessary, use words. We could all use a little more lived testimony, whether we are the beneficiaries of that testimony, or the protagonists of it. Faith, that is seen and behind the scenes, gives testimony to the Lord. May our testimony always be clear and real. Our participation in any of the 32 ministries of our parish, our generosity in supporting the Church through weekly stewardship, our contributions to the annual ABCD and its charities, our desire to advance our knowledge of the faith through participation in the Why be Catholic? program, our involvement in retreats and pilgrimages, and our attendance at Mass, visits to the Blessed Sacrament, and time at personal prayer all give witness to a lived faith. What kind of testimony to Jesus are we giving with our lives? May our priorities more and more become those of Jesus. May our testimony always be clear and real. 2 ND SUNDAY IN ORIDINARY TIME JANUARY 19, 2014 I will make you a light to the nations, that my salvation may reach to the ends of the earth. Isaiah 49:6b T THE CATHOLIC CHURCH: HERE COMES EVERYBODY his popular way of describing the universality of our Church is a theme of today s readings. The prophet Isaiah tells of God s servant who will be the light of the nations. It will not be enough for this servant only to bring back the survivors of Israel s dispersion and captivity. God s salvation must reach to the ends of the earth. Saint Paul writes to a local church of mainly Gentiles and presumably former sinners of all kinds in Corinth. He greets them and tells them that they are to take their place with saints everywhere in the name of Jesus Christ. The Gospel reading from John tells of Jesus commissioning by the Father in the Holy Spirit to bring salvation to all, to take away the sins of the world. This Chosen One has come to baptize the world in God s Spirit. Everybody. As you hear these words, consider your own task to bring the good news of salvation to everyone you will meet in the coming days, weeks, years. Copyright J. S. Paluch Co. NEXT WEEKEND S MASS SCHEDULE SATURDAY, JANUARY 25 TH 8:00 am Fr. Ibok 5:00 pm Fr. Davis SUNDAY, JANUARY 26 TH 7:30 am Fr. Martin 9:00 am Fr. Davis 10:30 am Fr. Martin 12:30 pm Fr. Loubriel 5:30 pm Fr. Ibok 7:00 pm Fr. Loubriel TREASURES FROM OUR TRADITION he symbols and actions of baptism evolved around T the experience of adults dying to old patterns of life and rising from the waters of baptism as new creations. As for newborn babies, at first it was desired to wait until the following Easter, when they could be baptized, anointed with chrism, and given a taste of the Eucharist in association with adults. The Church was always willing to baptize adults in emergency situations outside the Easter timetable, and in time, since infancy itself was a life threatening situation, the baptism of babies became commonplace. As with the emergency adult baptisms, it was required that parents bring the child, as soon as health was recovered, to the bishop for the full menu of sacraments. The very real fear of death for infants thus created a situation in which the three sacraments drifted apart from each other, and away from their original, adult celebration at Easter. Today, at last, we know a great deal about how our practices evolved. This knowledge is reshaping how we celebrate Easter, how we receive adult faith, and how we structure the faith journey of children. Rev. James Field, Copyright J. S. Paluch Co. In the upcoming weeks, the YM Corner will highlight some of the work that goes into the preparation of the annual Summer Vacation Bible School. In showcasing the different elements of the camp, it is our hope to inspire major sponsorship gifts for this Summer s program. These gifts will allow us to continue building upon the successes of previous years camps, providing an amazing experience while keeping registration costs low, as we continue nurturing the work of the Lord among the youngest of our parishioners. Last year, between the 240 campers and 110 Junior Volunteers, the seeds of faith were planted in the hearts of 350 youth from our parish and neighboring area. That is truly a remarkable and inspiring number, one that gives witness to the impact of the New Evangelization at work here in our parish! It was absolutely amazing to engage our youth in a fun, dynamic, community-oriented, and faith-centered atmosphere. It was even more beautiful that many these youth, especially among our high school volunteers, didn t want to leave! As we now begin preparations for the 4th Annual VBS this coming Summer, we do so with high hopes and higher expectations to really bring the Joy of the Gospel to life in our children! Thank you in advance for your prayers and support. -Jorge Santibáñez To Be Catholic Is To Be Joyful!
