In 1997, the John S. Leary Association of Black Attorneys, formerly known as the Charlotte Chapter of the North Carolina Association of Black Attorneys, renamed itself in honor of John Sinclair Leary, Sr., the second African-American admitted to practice law in North Carolina and the first in Charlotte. A native of Fayetteville, North Carolina and graduate of Howard University School of Law, Attorney Leary maintained a law office in Charlotte, North Carolina and served in the State Legislature and as Dean of Shaw University s Law Department. The John S. Leary Scholarship Foundation, the charitable arm of the John S. Leary Association of Black Attorneys, was created in 2012 to lend financial support in the form of scholarships to minority students attending law school in North Carolina and to aid the John S. Leary Association of Black Attorneys in its mission to increase diversity within the legal profession, facilitate the administration of justice, and provide leadership in the Charlotte community. This year s scholarship, named in memory of Julius Levonne Chambers, will be awarded to a law student who has demonstrated a commitment to advancing the cause of social justice and equal opportunity and has lived or intends to practice law in the Charlotte-Mecklenburg area. Attorney Chambers held many firsts, including, graduating first in his class from UNC School of Law, becoming the first African-American Editor-In-Chief of the Law Review, serving as the first legal intern of the NAACP Legal Defense and Education Fund, a position he was selected for by Thurgood Marshall, and opening the first integrated law firm in North Carolina, now known as Ferguson Chambers & Sumter located in Charlotte, North Carolina.
