It happens more often than one might think. This workshop will highlight activities that can jeopardize tax exempt status including: political campaigning, substantial lobbying, operating to benefit private interests, operating for non-exempt purposes, and failing to file required tax returns. Session Four J. Unrelated Business Income Tax (UBIT), Joe Kroll Even though nonprofit organizations are exempt from traditional income tax, they may be subject to unrelated business income tax. This workshop will cover the basics of UBIT and common situations where it may be applicable. If you are responsible for fundraising or are a professional advisor (accountant or attorney) this workshop is for you. K. It includes plenty of resources and question and answer time to help new members understand general expectations of board members. L. Restricted Funds, Kirk Harvey Does your organization accept restricted funds? If so, serious legal implications apply to the use of restricted funds. In this workshop we will explore the various ways funds can become restricted as to their use, how to account for them, and what it means for board members who must decide whether restricted funds can be sued for a particular purpose.
