Recreation of old canal as stormwater reservoir In 1880-1890 extensive fortifications were built around Copenhagen with the aim to deter an enemy from attacking the capital of a country greatly reduced after the loss of Schleswig-Holstein in 1864. The facility included a large rampart and a moat on the west and a number of forts on land and in Øresund and the possibility of flooding large areas to keep the enemy at bay. At this northern end, canals were dug to carry water from the extensive Furesø to enable flooding of large areas from east of Lyngby to the sea The dredged channel - Fæstningskanalen - ran through Lyngby and was filled up by the city's development in the 1930s - but the actual position got protected and is undeveloped today.
