As part of the 2007-08 budget process, the City Council approved the establishment of the classification of Medical Assistant. This classification works within the Employee Health Services section of the Human Resources Department. The Medical Assistant will assist Employee Health Services in ensuring the overall smooth running of the office, In addition, the Medical Assistant will aid with patient care in both the front and back offices, including the preparation of patients for exams, collection of lab specimens and performance of routine regulatory testing, Their assistance will enable the nurses to focus on more elaborate medical issues and will allow EHS to increase the number of patient appointments, as well as other services for employees, The GCEA has been consulted regarding the proposed class specification and has not expressed any concern, RECOMMENDATION That the proposed class specification for Medical Assistant be approved as submitted,
New Specification Approved by Commission 9/07 Glendale, California MEDICAL ASSISTANT DEFINITION: Under general supervision, this position provides medical assistance to patients by administering routine treatments, conducting lab test. and maintaining office records. ESSENTIAL DUTIES: This classification may perform the following essential duties: Under the direction of a registered nurse, assists in an office or clinic, helping with preliminary components of the physical examination of patients. Performs front and back office duties consisting of answering telephones, greeting patients, updating medical records, filing, directing patient flow and ensuring the overall smooth running of the office, Draws blood, records patient's weight, pulse rate, blood pressure and other vital signs, Performs health screenings; takes and charts vital signs and other pertinent information, Maintains medical records. Prepares patients for exams, collects and prepares laboratory specimens, including collecting urine for drug screening, Administers routine oral or injectable medications according to standardized protocols not requiring a high level of skill or nursing judgment. Performs blood tests, EKG's routine laboratory tests, and assists with clinical procedures. Prepares and cleans exam rooms and equipment with appropriate supplies, and disposes of used material. Performs audiometric and pulmonary function exams and vision examinations. Checks inventory and orders medical supplies and materials. Uses the Occupational Health Manager computer program to schedule appointments and update medical records, Assumes responsibility for ensuring the duties of the position are performed in a safe efficient manner, 1
Performs other related duties as assigned or as the situation requires. MINIMUM REQUIREMENTS KNOWLEDGES, SKILLS & ABILITIES Knowledge of medical assistant practices and procedures, including sterile techniques, emergency medical procedures, basic anatomy and physiology, possible complications from procedures, and medical terminology. Knowledge of principles and practices of work safety, especially related to communicable diseases. Knowledge of basic mathematical operations such as addition, subtraction, multiplication, and division. Knowledge of English grammar usage, spelling, punctuation, and business vocabulary. Knowledge of general office work such as filing and recording information. Knowledge of injuries and illnesses. Knowledge of correct lifting techniques. Skill in using computer software programs, including Microsoft Word, Excel, and Outlook. Skill in dealing tactfully and effectively with various cultural and ethnic groups; and establish and maintain effective working relationships. Ability to be self-motivated. Ability to carry out routine treatments, conduct lab tests, and maintain office records. Ability to chart in medical documents clearly and accurately. Ability to communicate effectively in English with supervisors, peers, and those who utilize the services of EHS. Ability to establish smooth working relationships and resolve interpersonal conflicts. Ability to foster a teamwork environment. Ability to handle confidential information with discretion. Ability to perform basic front and back office medical assistant duties. Ability to present a courteous, professional public image to the employees of the City. needs of the organization. Willingness to work a flexible schedule. EXPERIENCE One-year recent experience as a Medical Assistant. Successful completion of at least a certificate medical assistant program. Recent work in the occupational health field highly desirable. Experience in collection of Federal Department of Transportation drug specimens desirable. EDUCATIONITRAINING High school diploma or GED. Graduation from an accredited Medical Assistant educational program. Associate Degree as a medical assistant desirable. LICENSES Valid California Class C driver's License is required. CAOHC Certification desirable. NIOSH Spirometry Certification desirable. NOTE An equivalent combination of experience, education and/or training may substitute for the listed minimum requirements.
