GREYS FLY FISHING CATALOGUE 2012 / RODS XF2 The XF2 Range A rod for every angler The XF2 family is a collection of rods designed for multiple applications so you should find there s a rod here for you whatever your fly fishing obsession. From adaptable stillwater rods to super specialist light-line river rods there is an XF2 for everyone. XF2 rods use the latest techniques in fly rod engineering and technology, and our experienced engineers and product developers apply them inside out. But above all, these rods are designed to fish with, first and foremost. So we test them, for hundreds of hours, not only on our in-house test rigs, but in anglers hands, casting and fishing day after day. 219.99 This is the rod I ve been waiting for! Light and ultra-responsive in the tip but with enough backbone at the butt to subdue big fish. The ingenious insert in the handle allows me to extend the rod when fishing bigger rivers or when reaching for extra distance without having to re-rig. It s my first choice for all my Czech and French nymph fishing. John Tyzack, England International, on the XF2 Streamflex+ XF2 Streamflex Redeveloping the industry leading Greys Streamflex rod wasn t easy. The new rod is still designed for the most technical and demanding of light line anglers but we ve improved the Streamflex s legendary smoothness and in-hand balance with totally redesigned blanks and custom fittings as well as adding specialised sizes to meet the advancing demands of today s technical angler. All new, in-house designed aerospace grade alloy reel fittings with stunning burl maple wood spacers, section line up marks and Greys custom composite tipped handle combined with the new advanced blank design results in a light line rod range that can t be matched. 18 models make up this light line range from 6 #2 to 11 #4 All are four piece and come supplied with a triangular colour coded tube. The 11 #3 XF2 Streamflex is the best river rod I have ever used, and by quite a long way! I use it for absolutely everything (except that I don t fish streamer) for trout and grayling; any method, though it excels with a leader-to-hand rig with single or (small) double nymph and particularly dry fly. It has changed the way I fish. Jeremy Lucas, Hardy & Greys Academy, APGAI qualified guide and England International www.greysfishing.com

S Series rods will have a familiar feel to anglers used to underhand casting techniques Crisp and fast action delivers an outstanding level of performance with short Spey and shooting head lines Slightly softer in the butt than the T Series Much stiffer in the tip than the T Series Scandi style handle; Both upper and lower handles shorter than those of the T Specifically designed to encourage casters to hold the ball at the end of the handle Ring pattern optimised through high speed photography most S Series rods have 11 rings XF2 T Series A versatile rod for those who like casting, or fishing in rivers which favour the use of a full line. Provides performance at short as well as longer range, a much overlooked factor when choosing a fishing rod. Anglers used to longer, more traditional casting strokes will feel much more at home with the T Series rods User friendly action progressive and full flexing with so much in reserve Much softer tip than the S Series Slightly stiffer butt than the S Series Longer handles than the S Series Ring pattern optimised through high speed photography most T Series rods have 13 rings Each rod in the T and S Series range has the optimum line weight and length (or OWL) stamped on the rod blank, so whatever Salmon line you choose to fish you can select the optimum at a glance. The T and S Series rods are the result of a more holistic approach to the design of both rod and line. Basically, ensuring we have something to fit all fishing and casting scenarios and casting techniques. Although it has its sceptics, this approach will, I believe set the precedent moving forward. GRXi+ Top tip! Andy Smith, Hardy & Greys Academy Manager Lose some weight! What could be better than catching a big fat rainbow on a trusty 7-weight outfit? Well nothing unless you had caught it on a 5-weight set up. Personally, I try to fish as light as I can for a given situation. I find myself regularly opting for a 5-weight outfit more than any other, because then even a standard sized stock-fish will put up a fight that will delight even the most seasoned of anglers, giving 99.99 the impression of a fish twice its weight and power! Get hooked into any sizable fish on light tackle and you will be in for a treat and don t be surprised if you see several yards of your backing line out on the water. Floating lines and small flies like tiny nymphs, buzzers, CDCs & hoppers are terrific fished light. Go back to your 7-weights for casting out bigger flies, lures and, of course, those blustery days. GRXi+ Our best selling fly rod, the GRXi+ is a great value, great all-rounder. This rod punches above its weight compared to other rods in its class. The fast recovering blank is capable of very high line speeds and tight loops, making this a much loved rod. Great for beginners, those on a budget, or for adding an inexpensive additional rod to your kit Middle to tip action with fast recovery speed Saltwater-safe reel seat Comprehensive range, 20 single handed models from 6 #3 to 11 #7 including saltwater models; 5 double handed models from 11 6 #6 to 15 #10 For more fishing tips and insights, subscribe to Fin & Fly our free monthly online magazine featuring articles from a range of top anglers, such as John Bailey, Chris Ogborne and Ian Gordon. LEADERS GX Fluorocarbon Leader construction and fly presentation just got a whole lot better with the new GX Fluorocarbon. With all of the typical fluorocarbon qualities of excellent knot strength, abrasion resistance and near sub-surface invisibility, this product makes deceiving a wary quarry so much easier. Supplied on inter-locking spools in 50m & 100m lengths 8 breaking strains available 2.6lb to 10.8lb Importantly, the GX Fluoro has none of the drawbacks associated with many fluorocarbons as it s not too stiff, has zero memory and has a degree of suppleness that makes it easy to handle. Chris Ogborne, Hardy & Greys Consultant 4.99 Leader Construction Chris Ogborne Focus on presentation Leader construction is something that still holds mystery and fear for some anglers, but in truth it need not be this way. Also for some there is still a preoccupation with distance casting, especially on Stillwater, but it s far more important to focus on presentation. Yes, distance can be important but as I tell my clients when saltwater bass fishing, it is much better to present a fly properly at 20 metres than badly at 30. For those looking for a rule of thumb, cast only as far as you can whilst at the same time comfortably turning over a clean leader. Good leader construction is all about proportion and the following diagrams show how to construct two basic leaders, in the popular format of a stillwater three fly cast and a saltwater two-fly rig. Proficient casters can go for longer sections but always keep in mind the vital factor of proportion and that presentation should never be sacrificed for leader length or casting distance. GREYS FLY FISHING CATALOGUE 2012 / WADERS WADERS Stevie Munn Hardy & Greys Academy Member Tips for safe wading When you enter the water, take small sliding steps feeling the bed of the river or lake with your feet. Take your time and get a feel for the water conditions. Water clarity is also important don t wade where you cannot see the bottom, or use a wading staff to test for the bed. After several minutes you may need to tighten your wading boot laces, you don t want your feet slipping inside your wading boots. A good pair of wading boots is important with the right soles, as you want a firm footing. While fishing keep your feet apart about the width of your shoulders this helps you balance. When you move downstream, side-step keeping your body parallel to the flow of the current. Always wear a wading belt. Do not try to back out of the river, turn around and walk out just like you walked into the river. If you are uncertain about your wading abilities be sure to wear a flotation device. Only wade where you need to careless wading can scare fish. 199.99 GRXi Wading Boots Lightweight yet hardwearing boots for the technical angler.
