For the second consecutive week, the South Dakota State University wrestling team will host a top-10 team in dual action. Friday afternoon, the Jackrabbits will face their first Big 12 Conference opponent of the season by welcoming fourth-ranked Oklahoma State to Frost Arena. Action begins at 5 p.m. Video streaming of the dual will be available through FloWrestling.org. The Jackrabbits enter the matchup with a 1-3 record in duals so far this season. All three Jackrabbit losses have been to teams currently ranked in the top 20: No. 6 Virginia Tech, No. 18 Minnesota and 19th-ranked Virginia. Oklahoma State, meanwhile, is 0-1 in duals following an 18-16 loss at perennial national power Iowa on Nov. 14 As many as 11 nationally ranked wrestlers could compete in Saturday s dual, which will mark the second all-time meeting between SDSU and Oklahoma State on the mat. The Cowboys feature a ranked wrestler in eigh of 10 weight classes, including the top-ranked wrestlers at 141 (Dean Heil) and 165 pounds (Alex Dieringer), while the Jackrabbits feature three ranked wrestlers in 133-pounder Brance Simms, 157-pounder Cody Pack and 197- pounder Nate Rotert. Oklahoma State won the first-ever meeting between the two squads last season, 25-9, in a dual contested in Miami, Okla. Simms, Pack and Rotert all won by decision for the Jackrabbits. NATIONAL MENTION: The South Dakota State University wrestling team reached a milestone in its Division I pursuits as the Jackrabbits received mention in the USA Today/ NWCA Division I Coaches Poll for the first time on Nov. 17. The Jackrabbits, who were among six teams to receive votes in the poll but not crack the top 25, will have several opportunities to impress the voting panel throughout the season as they are scheduled to wrestle three more teams currently ranked in the top 25 Iowa, Oklahoma and West Virginia. Individually, three Jackrabbits are ranked in three different national polls. Brance Simms at 133 pounds became the latest Jackrabbit to crack the rankings, appearing at No. 16 in WIN Magazine s rankings after his victory over then-no. 17 Kevin Norstrem of Virginia Tech last Saturday. Following are current rankings as compiled by Intermat, WIN Magazine and FloWrestling: Cody Pack (157) sixth by WIN Magazine, seventh by Intermat and ninth by FloWrestling Nate Rotert (197) 10th by FloWrestling, 13th by WIN Magazine and 14th by Intermat Brance Simms (133) 16th by WIN Magazine

Finn Grinaker Open Four South Dakota State University freshman wrestlers claimed individual titles in the Maroon Division of the 2015 Finn Grinaker Open hosted by Concordia College on Nov. 21. In a round-robin format in the 133-pound weight class, Henry Pohlmeyer pinned his way to the title. A native of Johnston, Iowa, Pohlmeyer opened the tournament by winning a 10-4 decision over teammate Tyler Pieper. Pohlmeyer then reeled off four consecutive falls to claim the Maroon Division title, including pinning Lukas Maughan of Minnesota and Northern Iowa s Darrin Eades in his final two matches. Pieper tallied a 2-3 record, including a win by pin over Maughan, to take fourth. Lucas Eastman also won the 157-pound weight class in a round-robin format. The native of Rochester, Washington, posted pins in the first two rounds, defeating Tanner Schreifels of Northland Community College (Minn.) in 2 minutes and 2 seconds, followed by a pin of Minnesota s Jonathan Hoffner in 2:51. Eastman later added two wins by major decision and one by medical forfeit to seal the title.. Two other Jackrabbits won their respective weight classes in a traditional bracketed format. Brett Bye wrestled his way to victory in the 165-pound weight class and Zac Carlson earned his third consecutive tournament title at 174 pounds. A Vermillion native, Bye opened the tournament with a 16-1 technical fall over Alex Giese of Northland and advanced to the championship with an 8-2 decision against Isaiah Patton of Northern Iowa. In the title bout, Bye recorded a 4-2 victory in the second suddenvictory overtime period against teammate Kasey Klapprodt. Klapprodt earned a spot in the finals after defeating Concordia s Nick Gravdahl by major decision, 13-5, in the first round and then earning decisions over Coleby Bratrud of Buena Vista (Iowa) and Adam Blees of Minnesota State, Moorhead. Carlson tallied four consecutive victories to win the 174-pound title. The Kerkhoven, Minnesota, product earned a 7-6 victory over St. Cloud State s Brady Nelson in the opening round, followed by a pair of shutouts over Mitchell Zachman of Northland (13-0) and Logan Rhode of Minnesota State, Moohread (4-0). In the championship match, Carlson came up with a 6-5 decision over Monty Holm of St. Cloud State. Holler posted a pair of onepoint victories in his first two matches, defeating Garrett Hoffner of Minnesota State, Moorhead, 7-6, and Northern Iowa s Zach Witte, 2-1. After dropping a 6-1 decision to Andrew Fogarty of North Dakota State in the semifinals, Holler again defeated Hoffner in the wrestlebacks before withdrawing due to injury. JACKRABBITS SIGN THREE: Head wrestling coach Chris Bono announced earlier this month that Ohio high school standout Garrett Jordan and twin brothers Joshua and Justin Portillo of Clarion, Iowa, have each signed a National Letter of Intent, indicating they will enroll at South Dakota State University next fall and compete for the Jackrabbits.

We knew that after bringing in 16 new wrestlers for this season we would have a much smaller recruiting class, but we are very pleased with the quality. Jordan is a two-time state qualifier for top-ranked St. Paris Graham Local High School. He compiled a 92-18 record between his sophomore and junior seasons, qualifying for state in the 152-pound weight class in 2014 before posting a third-place finish in 2015 at 170 pounds. He posted a 54-7 overall record his junior season and will serve as a team captain for his high school team this season. Jordan is expected to compete at 174 pounds at the collegiate level. Garrett is a tough-nosed kid with a lot of upside, Bono said. We can t wait to get him in the room. Justin Portillo, who is projected as a 125-pounder, enters his senior season at Clarion High School with a 74-5 career record. He finished as runner-up at 106 pounds as a sophomore, then claimed the state title last season en route to a 46-1 record. During the club season, Justin Portillo was a 2015 Iowa Triple Crown winner, claiming state titles in freestyle, Greco-Roman and folkstyle. He also recorded victories at several other prestigious regional tournaments, including winning the Intermat JJ Classic three times and claiming titles at both the Midwest Classic and Indiana Hoosier Preseason Open in 2015. Joshua Portillo has won consecutive state titles, completing a perfect 32-0 season in winning the 113-pound title as a sophomore and compiling a 50-1 record as a junior en route to winning the 126-pound Class 1A state championship. He also has excelled in folkstyle and freestyle tournaments, winning championships at the USA Wrestling Folkstyle Naitonals and Preseason Nationals, among others. Josh and Justin will have an immediate impact in our program, Bono said. The are tough, gritty kids who live and breathe the sport. Big 12 programs have a rich history of wrestling success garnering 49 NCAA team titles and crowning 277 individual national champions. South Dakota State will be competing at the Big 12 Wrestling Championship for the first time. SDSU was accepted as an affiliate member in July. COACH BONO: Chris Bono has engineered a successful rebuilding process during his tenure as head coach of the South Dakota State University wrestling program. Now in his fourth season, Bono has helped mentor Jackrabbit wrestlers to qualify for the NCAA Championships seven times and has posted a 23-31 dual record. During the 2014-15 season, the Jackrabbits posted their first winning dual record in nine seasons and three SDSU wrestlers Cody Pack, Nate Rotert and J.J. Everard qualified for the NCAA Championships. Pack reached the national tournament for the third consecutive year at 157 pounds and was one win away from achieving All-America status. SDSU also had three national qualifiers during the 2013-14 season as Pack, Joe Brewster and Alex Kocer all qualified out of the NCAA West Regional/Western Wrestling Conference Championships. While leading the Jackrabbits, Bono was also tabbed as coach for the U.S. Men's Freestyle team at the 2013 Pan American Championships. In the world event, Coach Bono led Team USA to a 13-point victory. Overall, Bono has a 62-47 dual record in six-plus seasons as a collegiate head coach. He
