Istituto Marangoni has played a significant role in the development of the Italian fashion industry: Constantly updating its courses, creating young creative talents, and providing immediate answers to the market necessities. Apparel Merchandising & Design students can participate in this summer program. United Kingdom-England Leeds University The city of Leeds, located in northern England, is a true student city that is home to national and regional attractions from the Grand Theatre to the Leeds United Football Club. Leeds University is a campus university, located just ten minutes from the Leeds city center. With over 32,000 students from 130 countries, Leeds University boasts a very diverse student population. Students can choose from a variety of disciplines when studying at Leeds for a semester or academic year. Nuova Accademia Di Belle Arti Milano (NABA) NABA Nuova Accademia di Belle Arti Milano is an innovative Arts and Design Academy and at the same time a dynamic artistic and cultural centre. NABA is located in one of Milan s historical districts called Navigli (canals), one of the most attractive and liveliest areas in the city. The campus also boasts excellent IT infrastructure and includes computer graphics, editing video, 2D and 3D modelling and sound design laboratories, as well as tailoring, printmaking, modelmaking, painting and light design laboratories. NABA offers both summer and semester programs. France Paris American Academy (PAA), France Centered near the Notre-Dame cathedral in the famous Latin quarter, the Paris American Academy draws upon Paris cultural and artistic heritage in making the city it s campus. The strongly vocational approach prepares students for careers in Fashion. Semester and summer programs available. Paris Fashion Institute, France Paris Fashion Institute acts as a hands-on guide for a professional living textbook of fashion creation, history and marketing; it utilizes the enormous range of assets available only in Paris, fashion capital of the world. Students are taken beyond the surface glamour and exposed to the day-to-day workings of the industry. This summer program is appropriate for Apparel Merchandising & Design students. University of East London With over 23,000 students from 120 countries worldwide, UEL is one of the UK s most diverse and fastest growing universities. Located in East London, the University is near the site of the 2012 London Olympics. Semester and academic year options are available. Summer Faculty-Led Program in Europe France Business and Design of European Fashion This summer course in Paris, France integrates European fashion merchandising and business with design techniques and other special topics related to European fashion and couture. Class structure consists of lecture/discussion sessions, lab sessions, and field trips. Students will receive credit for AMD 497. Dr. Maureen MacGillivray (macgi1ms@cmich.edu) is the faculty leader for this summer program. Africa Ghana Global Mamas Internship Global Mamas is a fair trade organization located in Ghana, supporting the sustainable development of women artisans by producing and exporting fair trade products. Internship opportunities are available for Apparel Merchandising and Design students. Merchandising students may intern in Accra, while Design students intern in El Mina. The internship site is available during the summer term.

Asia Japan/South Korea The Business of Fashion in Asia The program is designed to provide students with unique experience in retail/business environments in South Korea and Japan. Participants in the 11-day tour will visit several of most interesting destinations in South Korea and Japan and observe consumers and culture and experience retailing venues and production facilities. Students will earn credit for AMD 497 or AMD 597 (three credits). Dr. Seung-Eun Lee (lee6s@cmich.edu) is the faculty leader for this summer program. Oceania Australia University of Technology, Sydney UTS is located in central Sydney, adjacent to the city s vibrant commercial and cultural hub and surrounded by the cosmopolitan districts of Darling Harbor and Chinatown. A network of creative inner city villages and the spectacular Sydney harbor foreshore are a short walk away. This site is appropriate for Apparel Merchandising and Design students. ISEP Various Countries CMU is a member of the ISEP consortium, which offers study abroad opportunities in forty countries around the world. Tuition, room and board exchange available for most programs, making ISEP a low-cost program option. Many participating universities offer coursework in English. Complete an Internship for Credit Possible internship locations include: Australia Belgium France Germany Ghana Ireland New Zealand United Kingdom Students wishing to participate in a for-credit internship will work with Study Abroad Programs in selecting an internship provider. Study a Language Speaking a second language can greatly enhance your degree. Students can choose to continue their studies of languages taught at CMU: Arabic Chinese French German Japanese Spanish Students may also choose to enroll in a language course not taught at CMU, while taking other courses in English (i.e, Italian). by year Freshman Participate in a short-term faculty-led or summer program! CMU offers several short-term study abroad programs open to first-year students. Take courses towards general education requirements, electives, exploratory fashion courses, or study language. It is possible to fulfill the University Program IV-B requirement by studying abroad for a summer. Your first semester at CMU is the ideal time to begin planning for a study abroad experience. Be sure to attend the Study Abroad Fair! Sophomore Participate in a semester study abroad program during the second semester of your sophomore year or participate in a summer or a short-term facultyled program! Take fashion courses, electives, study a language abroad, or fulfill the UP IV-B. Attend the Study Abroad Fair! Junior Study abroad for an entire academic year, for a semester, summer or participate in a short-term faculty-led program! Focus on your major or minor requirements, electives, study a language, or complete an internship abroad. Senior Complete your degree requirements, electives, or complete an internship abroad. Build your professional skills through participating in a program relevant to your career goals. We recommend studying abroad a semester prior your last semester at CMU. how can i Afford it? If you want to study abroad but don t think you can afford to - you may be wrong! There are a variety of programs available at different lengths and costs. Studying abroad can be affordable! Some programs offer tuition, room and board for the equivalent cost of studying at CMU. Your Study Abroad advisor will provide you with a budget sheet detailing the costs of your program. There are a number of resources available to help fund your study abroad experience. Financial Aid Financial aid received may be applied to the cost of the program. It is also possible to apply for additional aid based on the program s actual cost (including airfare). Students are also typically able to use the scholarships that they currently receive at CMU. For additional information, contact the Office of Scholarships and Financial Aid, Warriner Hall 202, 989-774-3674. CMU Study Abroad Scholarships CMU students are invited to apply for a scholarship through the Study Abroad Programs office. Scholarship opportunities are also available through the various academic departments and colleges and the Honors Program. Please contact the department for more information and application. Gilman Scholarship The Gilman Scholarship is offered by the Institute of International Education. Award recipients can receive up to $5,000 to defray the costs associated with studying abroad. Applicants must receive a Pell Grant to be eligible to apply. For more information and application instructions, visit www.iie.org/gilman Freeman-ASIA The Freeman-ASIA Award Program is available to American undergraduates who study in East and Southeast Asia. Recipients are awarded up to $3,000 for summer, $5,000 for semester, and $7,000 for an academic year. Follow this easy step-by-step process: 1. Create a Study Abroad Profile what is the process? Go to www.studyabroad.cmich.edu and select Get Started. You will be able to choose Create a Study Abroad Profile and complete an advising questionnaire so that the study abroad staff can better assist you. 2. Research Programs Online Use Choose Your Program search at the Study Abroad website at www.studyabroad.cmich.edu to explore the available programs. 3. Stop by the Study Abroad Programs office We invite you to come to the Study Abroad Programs office, located in Ronan 330, to learn more about the programs offered by CMU. You can meet with a peer advisor during the walk-in hours or be able to schedule an appointment with a study abroad advisor. 4. Meet with a study abroad advisor Call (989) 774-4308 or visit the Study Abroad Programs office to make an appointment. Your study abroad advisor will help you determine the program that best suits your goals and priorities as well as provide information about the application process, requirements, and finances. 5. Complete your study abroad application Once you have decided on the program your advisor will give you access to the study abroad application. You can then log on to your study abroad online account to start your application. Complete the online application questionnaires, signature documents, and request recommendations. Gather and submit materials to the Study Abroad Programs office by the deadline. 6. Meet with faculty advisors Meet with appropriate faculty advisors to obtain course credit approvals. All courses must be pre-approved to receive CMU credit. Some course credit approvals may be viewed online. 7. Meet with a financial aid advisor Only required for students who wish to apply for financial aid (this includes loans). Call (989) 774-3674 to make an appointment with an advisor in the Office of Scholarships and Financial Aid, Warriner 202. 8. Prepare for study abroad Participate in the study abroad pre-departure orientation. Information will be provided to apply for a passport, apply for visa if required, make flight arrangements, check into any health concerns, etc.
