Data Center Business Overview: How Trends impact your Datacenter Strategy Anna Conan Global Data Center strategy deployment VP Foundational BUSINESS OVERVIEW Rev 4a

The energy dilemma is here to stay Continued Consumption Peak demand Structural cost Environment Energy demand By 2050 Electricity by 2030 Source: IEA 2007 Over the past 12 years (France) Expensive, under utilised peak capacity Of trade deficits are linked to fossil fuels and are increasing CO 2 emissions to avoid dramatic climate changes by 2050 Source: IPCC 2007, figure (vs. 1990 level) Conflicts for resource access & control Frequent power outages Rising energy prices Climate change Schneider Electric 2

Climate change has a global impact Risk linked with Climate change Extreme risk * High risk Multiple risks difficult to measure Increase in rainfall Tropical storms increase Decrease in rainfall Sea level increase Desertification Impact on agricultural activity PNUE ; V. Data Center challenges The double-edged squeeze The BUSINESS The PLANET More computing per watt! Reduce carbon footprint! Schneider Electric 5

Data Center Challenges It was expensive and took months to complete a first proposal that was rejected! It s going to take another month to revise and resubmit. My project manager had a detailed schedule but came in 6 months late. Even more time was lost when the components didn t work together as designed. Data Center Life Cycle Due to all of the unexpected cost overruns and change orders, my data center came in 30% over budget. My data center was challenged to power and cool my new applications. I could not install new IT equipment even though there was room for it in the racks. Schneider Electric 6
