Calculating the bending forces There are two different variants to the bending process: Air bending Coining The press force (F) in coining is 3 to 8 times higher than in air bending. The necessary press force (F) results from the die opening width (V) and the material thickness (t). The die opening width (V) should be 8 to 12 times the material thickness. For bevellings using this die opening width (V), both the shortest arm (b) and its angle (α) must be taken into consideration. If a smaller die opening width (V) is selected, the internal radius (r i ) obtained is smaller. Air bending Coining t Use the press force table and the appropriate equations to determine the reference values. b S Press force table (press force in t/m r i, b, V, t in mm) Required press force for 90 air bending material 450 N/mm 2 Internal radius r i Minimum edge b t = material thickness F = press force V = die opening width b = minimum edge S = shortest arm length r i = internal radius α = angle 1.0 1.3 1.7 2.0 2.6 3.3 3.9 4.9 5.3 5.7 6.6 7.4 7.9 9.5 11.2 12.7 14.3 15.9 17.5 4 5.5 7 8 10 15 19 20 21.5 28.5 29 34 39 46 51 56 61 ri V 19.2 20.7 22.3 23.9 25.6 28.6 31.9 39.9 66 73 78 83 88 102 112 7 t Die opening width V 6 8 10 12 16 20 24 30 32 35 40 45 50 60 70 80 90 100 110 120 0 140 150 160 180 200 250 Material thickness t required press force F in t/m 1.0 8 6 1.2 19 10 8 1.5 22 16 17 2.0 32 25 14 3.0 32 25 19 4.0 65 50 37 34 30 25 5.0 63 57 51 42 36 32 6.0 97 89 78 65 55 48 38 7.0 1 94 79 69 54 44 8.0 0 110 94 74 60 50 9.0 146 125 97 79 66 57 10.0 162 125 101 84 72 63 11.0 157 127 105 90 78 69 12.0 194 156 0 110 96 85 76.0 189 157 3 116 102 91 14.0 227 187 159 8 121 108 15.0 221 188 162 142 127 16.0 259 219 189 166 147 18.0 292 251 219 194 20.0 324 283 250 25.0 30.0 82 97 88 114 103 95 2 120 110 101 174 158 144 2 1 224 202 184 169 144 1 383 344 3 286 243 211 158 486 443 375 324 240 xample: Material thickness t = 4.0 mm optimum die opening width V = 32.0 mm minimum edge b = 20.0 mm shortest arm length S = 24.0 mm internal radius r i = 5.3 mm required press force F = 34.0 t/m Determining the die width opening V in mm: Material thickness t in mm 0.5 8.0 9.0 10.0 12.0 and above Die opening width V 8 x t 10 x t 12 x t Determining the shortest arm length S in mm: S = b + t Tensile strengths: Aluminium R m = 200 300 N/mm 2 Steel R m = 370 450 N/mm 2 High-grade steel R m = 650 700 N/mm 2
