ring Survey-2014 Methodology B&M Research Team : Daisy Singh, Lalit Bhatt, Trivendra, Manish, Rajeev, Abhishek, Udit, Mohit & Mayukh Business & Management Chronicle along with its online partner cat100.in is presenting the most comprehensive ALL INDIA ENGINEERING COLLEGE SURVEY 2014. This survey is of utmost importance for the aspiring candidates who do rigorous research before entering engineering colleges. To measure the progress of our participants, we have relied on distinctly designed parameters. Our objective of rating engineering institutes was to raise the standard of technical education in our country and to evaluate them on different parameters designed by us. This is the 3rd Engineering Colleges survey being published by B&M Chronicle based on 360 degree research without any bias or favouritism. The survey was conducted in 3 steps: first step was the preparation of survey questionnaire. The questionnaire was designed with valuable inputs and suggestions from the academicians, deans/directors and industry experts. We had further modified and redesiged the questionnaire as per the current scenario. The questionnaire included different parameters like infrastructure, academics, admission criteria, faculty, research & publication, placements, industry interface, etc. The research team s goal was to take qualitative as well as quantitative data for complete findings. Each parameter was further divided into sub-parameters for micro detailing and detailed analysis. The questionnaire was sent to about 1000 institutes. Out of received responses, the research team selected 52 colleges to be considered for the final survey. The selection of institutes for final survey was done on the eligibility criteria fixed by the research team viz institutes which are fully functional for more than 3 years, placement data, batch size, alumni association, etc. However, some of the prominent institutes like the IITs & NITs did not participate in our survey inspite of several reminders. They insisted us to take data from their websites but that data was insufficient for our complete research, so we have not included them in our survey. In the second stage, a detailed analysis of the received data was done by the research team. The annexures were examined in a detailed manner. The validation team of B&M Chronicle conducted physical survey in a good number of participating institutes. They met the directors, faculty members and students of the concerned institutes. The data submitted by the institutes was validated thoroughly by the research team. After the validation process, we ranked the institutions on the basis of their affiliation, academia, curriculum, infrastructure, placement, etc. Finally, in the third phase, an in-depth analysis of gathered information was conducted with the help of rationalized research tools to arrive at the parameter-wise as well as overall rankings. While analysing the data, emphasis was given to aspects like quality of students, curriculum, intellectual capital of the faculty, infrastructure (library, recreational rooms, canteens, entertainment, hostels, faculty accommodation, and wellness), placement records and industry interaction. Marks were then calculated using the weightage decided by the expert panel for all parameters and sub-parameters. As per the scores allotted to each institute, the colleges were categorized by giving different rankings- A+++, A++, A+, A, B++, B+. The placement data was analysed critically. This year, in our Survey, we have presented the data of various companies with the average salary offered to a B.Tech. student to give an idea about the placement trends. AIEEE turns JEE Common Tests from 2015 There will be a common test for JEE mains & JEE Advanced from 2015. Students can focus on single test instead of two. All India Engineering Entrance Examination (AIEEE) has got renamed as Joint Entrance Examination (JEE). Now there will be no AIEEE as it has become JEE, Joint Entrance Examination. The icing on the cake is now that students have to focus on the single examination from 2015, as there will be no separate tests for JEE Main and JEE Advanced, both the tests will be merged. The decision has been taken by human resource ministry that all central government-funded engineering schools, including the Indian Institutes of Technology (IITs), will select students through a common entrance examination in 2015, merging the existing two-tier joint entrance examination (JEE). Though, in 2010 a proposal for a common engineering entrance examination was made by the Ministry of Human Resource Development. One of the names proposed was Indian Science Engineering Eligibility Test (ISEET). Joint Entrance Examination (JEE) is an all India common entrance examination which is conducted for admission in various engineering courses like B.Tech, B.E, B.Arch and B.Planning under the direction of Ministry of Human Resource Development (MHRD). JEE is being conducted in two parts i.e., JEE-Main and JEE- Advanced. JEE-Main exam is to get admission in IIITs (Indian Institutes of Information Technology), National Institutes of Technology, CFTIs (Central Funded Technical Institute), etc. and JEE-Advanced is for admission in Indian Institutes of Technology and the Indian School of Mines (ISM), Dhanbad. Under the current format, the IITs conduct students counselling first, followed by the NITs and other top schools, which are carried out after a month, especially after the Class-12 school board results are available. India has more than 23 school boards. At least 1.4 million students appeared for the JEE-Main exam last year and the top 150,000 sat for the JEE-Advanced test. The students of many NITs are very good and joint counselling will help the students and engineering schools in not just reducing hassles but will also help to reduce the number of seats falling vacant. About 600 seats at the IITs and the NITs fell vacant in 2012 because of separate counselling that allows a candidate to receive offers from an IIT as well as an NIT at the same time. A candidate who gets an offer from an IIT and an NIT hangs on to the IIT seat while waiting for his choice of subject in an NIT. By the time the candidate decides on the final place to join, it is often too late for the colleges to fill up these vacant seats. Under the proposed common counselling system, a student will get only one choice. If a candidate does not accept it, then he will be given the option to join another school. In the 2015 examination, the syllabus for JEE-Main/Advanced consists of 4 subjects i.e., Physics, chemistry, Mathematics and Aptitude test. The common exam instead of two tier examination will reduce the hassles to some extent as seats will not be vacant moreover, because of single examination there will be less pressure on students as instead of concentrating on two separate examinations they can focus on single one. So get prepared for the common test. 30 Business & Management Chronicle June/July 2014
