Today we will take a look at some of the features of Windows 10. 1

For home users, Windows 10 is a free upgrade to Windows 7 and 8. For Clemson users, you will need to wait until your tech support provider installs it on your computer if you are using a Clemson Windows enterprise version, you will not see the free upgrade option. 2

Here are some of the new and/or improved features in Windows 10 3

The new start menu, gotten by clicking on the Windows icon in the lower right hand corner, can be resized by dragging the sides. 4

Settings, Personalization, Start lets you change which items show in start. 5

If you click on the arrow beside items in the start, you will see folders or options. Next, let s click on All apps. 6

You will see an alphabetic list of all applications installed on your computer. If you click Back it goes back to the previous screen. If you click on 0-9, you will get just an alphabet. 7

Here I ve clicked on 0-9 and can quickly go to a letter. Or click Back to go back to the list. 8

You can right click for more options on items on the Start menu. Here, I ve right clicked on Apps and I had the choice to pin it to Start, taskbar, or don t show in current list (the next Most used item will take its place). 9

Right click on a tile to get choices. You can unpin it from Start, pin to taskbar, or change the size of the tile. 10

Click on arrow beside File Explorer to see pinned and frequent folders. 11

Right click on user name to get user account settings, lock Windows, sign out, or sign in to a different account. 12

New taskbar has slightly smaller icons and some different ones. Left clicking an item opens it. Right click gives you more options. First icon is Start screen, next is Cortana (search tool), third icon is Task View that shows running tasks or screen. Open icons have blue lines under them. Far right is action center. Notifications will pop up in the lower right hand side of screen. 13

14

Arrow at bottom of a card shows more information. Three dots gives you more settings. 15

Cortana - Cortana notebook personal assistant Tell me a joke Right click in taskbar to switch it from box to icon to give yourself more taskbar space. 16

Math, Reminder. 17

Five options : settings, home, notebook, reminders, feedback 18

Right click start button for these options. 19

Settings and Control Panel have most of the same options except Windows Updates is no longer in Control Panel. And if you search for a setting that is not in Settings, it will automatically open Control Panel. You can open either and pin to taskbar if you want or search for it. 20

Click on third icon for Taskview. It give you the task switcher or the ability to create new desktops or go to a different virtual desktop. Alt-Tab also gives the tasks. 21

Hub, reading mode, annotate, reading list. MS developed Edge with speed and modern technologies in mind. Note the difference between Edge and IE icons Edge is a darker e. Also note the new options in Edge. Let s click on the Annotate icon which looks like a pen and paper. 22

If you select the pen tool you can pick a color, and then draw on the screen. If you have a touch device, you can do it with your finger. Or if you are using a mouse, you can use that. The highlighter is the second option, then an eraser to erase your markings, and the fourth choice is a note. Notice the Note on this screen. The fifth option is a clipper if you want to select a part of the screen to save as a picture file or copy and paste into another application. On the right there are three icons. The save (diskette) option lets you save to OneNote, the share option lets you share with applications you have installed such as MS Mail or Facebook, and Exit takes you out of Annotation mode. 23

In Edge, select text, right click, Ask Cortana. So the integration with Cortana is two way. In this example, I highlighted the word Cortana, did a right click, and clicked on Ask Cortana. 24

If you click on the icon with three lines, you get the Edge Hub. This includes favorites, a reading list 25

It s still here!!! Copy/Paste is a little easier 26

27

28

Explorer shows quick access list of useful locations. You can pin and unpin folders. Right click and select add to quick access. As you'd expect, OneDrive is also incorporated within File Explorer. While it's now an integral part of Windows 10 it's not a pain to dismiss, and you can quite happily use Windows 10 without it. 29
