Advanced virtualization management for and System Center environments Microsoft extends the management capabilities of and System Center Virtual Machine Manager giving Microsoft customers a scalable, advanced virtualization solution to quickly respond to changing business needs.

Introduction Essentials for Microsoft extends the management capabilities of and System Center Virtual Machine Manager with advanced virtualization tools for managing storage in virtual environments, automating the virtual machine lifecycle, and dynamically provisioning infrastructure. It unlocks powerful array-based storage services, accelerates testing and development cycles, and streamlines the delivery of virtual infrastructure to improve both the speed and efficiency of IT delivery. Situation Server virtualization with Windows Server 2008 allows you to make the best use of server hardware investments, reduce management overhead and create a more dynamic IT infrastructure. However, as is common with new, game-changing technologies, server virtualization can challenge traditional approaches to IT delivery. For example, storage management in virtualized environments can be cumbersome and inefficient because virtualization makes it difficult for organizations to take advantage of advanced storage services, such as thin provisioning, deduplication and snapshots. As a result, storage configuration and management of virtualization environments is far from simple. Another challenge common to virtual environments is managing virtual machine lifecycles through lab and production. The ease with which virtual machines can be created and deployed creates an opportunity for faster development cycles. However, this same flexibility inevitably leads to uncontrollable sprawl of virtual machines and geometric growth of related datacenter infrastructure. Lab management and virtualization automation tools are essential to managing virtualization lifecycles. Last, server virtualization is an enabling technology that provides for new ways of delivering applications and desktop to users. can serve as the foundation for XenDesktop, a virtual desktop infrastructure (VDI) offering that allows users to access work environment from anywhere. While the IT benefits of VDI are undeniable, the management of virtual and physical infrastructure associated with centralized desktops can present real challenges for an organization. For example, the storage requirements of virtual desktop infrastructure can completely offset the value of a centralized desktop delivery model. To combat these challenges, delivers unique virtual machine provisioning services and integrated storage management to streamline image management and dramatically reduce storage requirements in VDI deployments. 2

Solution enables Windows IT professionals, storage managers and virtualization project managers to accelerate virtualization projects and move production workloads onto quickly, with less effort, and scale as business needs grow. is based on the Microsoft Management Console 3.0 and provides a consistent management experience for administrators by integrating with System Center Virtual Machine Manager and other Microsoft tools you already own. One-click access to native storage devices provides simplified management through storage configuration wizards that leverage existing storage array-based services and technologies directly from within the Microsoft Management Console. supports all storage architectures and works with existing Windows storage management products to deliver faster virtual machine deployment and lower storage management TCO in virtual environments. 3

Take advantage of lab management tools within to automate the setup and tear-down of application test beds. Develop, test and deploy production applications faster by sharing configurations, software images and pre-built production workloads from a central repository. Reduce virtual machine sprawl with fine-grained controls for managing the ownership and use of virtual machines, and retiring resources that are not actively used. Provisioning services accelerates the roll-out of server workloads, dramatically improves IT agility and simplifies ongoing IT administration by dynamically provisioning countless workloads from a single server image. With, organizations can reduce both storage costs and the burden of patching, maintaining, testing and supporting dozens or hundreds of separate server images. further improves IT efficiencies with its broad coverage for datacenter infrastructure. It can provision workloads to both physical and virtual servers, and to multiple hypervisor technologies, including and XenServer. It even allows administrators to provision complete images, including the hypervisor, to a bare metal machine, with or without internal disks. Storage efficiency can be increased ten-fold in many cases through the consolidation of server images to a single, centralized repository or the use of thin provisioning and deduplication technologies offered natively by storage arrays. also optimizes the delivery of server workloads for the highest datacenter flexibility and server utilization. Instead of deploying, patching and maintaining dozens or hundreds of server images, take advantage of provisioning services to streamline the delivery of server workloads across the datacenter. Accelerate development cycles while preventing virtual machine sprawl with lifecycle management tools that automate the creation, deployment, maintenance and control of virtual infrastructure in lab and production environments.
