In fact, every time someone donates to Goodwill, they are helping us provide job training and employment services to people in need. With 16 convenient retail stores and donation centers in neighborhoods across Southeast Louisiana, it s easy to make a donation and make a difference in the community. 2011 was a successful year for our Goodwill. Our Workforce Development Division served 7,390 people and helped 1,781 individuals find jobs. Our Retail Division set a new record for revenue and relocated our Covington store to a prime location for shoppers and donors. Our Contracts Division outpaced the previous year s performance providing janitorial, landscaping or other outsourced services to 26 federal, state and commercial sites. Edible Enterprises, Goodwill s food business incubator, supported the efforts of nearly 30 companies manufacturing products in our commercial kitchen. Looking forward, 2012 is shaping up to be the most progressive in recent history with an expansion of job training programs that will broaden our impact in the community. With the continued support of our donors, shoppers and community partners and through the concerted efforts of our staff and board of directors we remain steadfast in our mission of changing lives through the power of work. Our Business Is Changing Lives Workforce Development Goodwill s Workforce Development Division provides life changing services that help individuals overcome barriers to employment. No matter an individual s situation homelessness, disability or lack of education Goodwill provides job training, education, employment and support services that help individuals re-enter the workforce and place them on the path to economic independence and self-sufficiency. Workforce Highlights: 7,390 persons came to Goodwill s Workforce Development Center for services in 2011. 1,781 persons were placed into competitive employment. Goodwill assists persons with a wide range of disabilities and employment barriers including, visual impairment, hearing impairment, physical disabilities, neurological disabilities, learning disabilities, substance abuse, psychiatric or emotional disabilities, developmental disabilities, unemployed or dislocated workers, underemployed, ex-offenders, homeless, older workers, welfare recipients. Goodwill offers skill training in computer literacy, culinary arts, work readiness, literacy, janitorial, landscaping and retail. Workforce Development provides assessments and community-based placement services to people with disabilities. Goodwill offers an outreach program for homeless persons and women with families living in transitional housing; an ex-offender reintegration program offering training in high demand areas (culinary arts, biodiesel training, and broadband technology) and a youth mentoring program for at risk youth. Mike McKee Goodwill has been a real blessing for me Mike s Story In 2008, Mike McKee was involved in an offshore tugboat accident that resulted in significant back pain and post-traumatic stress disorder. For someone who had been self-sufficient and employed all of his adult life, the accident left Mike unemployed, depressed and unsure of his future. The next few years were a struggle for Mike until he saw a flyer promoting Goodwill s Culinary Arts Training Program. Upon meeting with a Goodwill Case Manager, Mike soon enrolled in the program that would turn his life around. It s like a door opened for me for the first time in a long time, says Mike. Mike graduated the program in 2010 and has landed a job with Fleur de Lis Catering, one of the most prestigious caterers in New Orleans. Thanks to the skills he learned at the Culinary Program, Mike now is part of a team that has prepared 20,000 meals in one weekend for Essence Festival and New Orleans Jazz Fest gigs. It s been a real dream come true for me, says Mike. 2 3

Congratulations 4 Division Employees of the Year 2011 ADMINISTRATION UMICA BOYD-BARNES HR RECRUITER CONTRACTS STACY FRISCO CASE MANAGER RETAIL KATHY COMELLAS GOODWILL STORE MANAGER Tarmeca Barnes Goodwill Leadership Tarmeca Barnes 2011 Edgar J. Helms Award Winner Tarmeca Barnes, Goodwill s Human Resources Generalist, received the Edgar J. Helms Award in 2011. Named after Goodwill s founder, the Edgar J. Helms Award recognizes a Goodwill employee who exemplifies the mission of Goodwill Industries and Rev. Helms values of unselfish service to people with disabilities or other disadvantaging conditions. Tarmeca initially came to Goodwill as a temp worker for the HR Department in 2009. It didn t take long for her talent and tenacity to be recognized and she soon was hired as the Human Resources Generalist, where she interacts with hundreds of Goodwill employees, many of whom have a disability or other employment barrier. Tarmeca s patience and passion for the people is a primary reason she was recognized for the Edgar J. Helms Award. Tarmeca goes above and beyond the call of duty to help people. When someone makes a mistake, she is patient and takes the time to illustrate the proper way of doing things, said retail employee Monica Ramagos. Although Tarmeca worked in HR for 10 years before coming to Goodwill, she has gained a new perspective of the employment challenges people with disabilities and other employment disadvantages face. In addition to her fulltime responsibilities at Goodwill, Tarmeca is a single mother raising two beautiful children and working toward her Master of Management degree. Tarmeca says her Goodwill job has been a fulfilling experience, where she s witnessed the power of work firsthand. I believe that every person should have the opportunity to work, no matter their limitations, and that those who ve made a wrong decision should be offered a second chance as well. I like working for a company that shares that belief and is dedicated to helping others help themselves. Award Winners Robert Heim Robert Heim 2011 Sonny Trenchard Award Winner Named after a board member who was innovative in his support of Goodwill s mission, the Sonny Trenchard Award recognizes a Goodwill employee who has made a significant contribution (program, service, process or innovation) to the advancement of the Goodwill mission. Robert Heim, Accounts Receivable Coordinator in Goodwill s Accounting Department, received the honors in 2011. Robert has been part of the Goodwill family for 5 years and is responsible for the oversight of accounting processes for Goodwill s 16 retail stores. Robert is not only receptive to new ideas, he embraces change and is relentless in the pursuit of implementing new policies or procedures making sure that all the results are correct, said Kathy Voitier, Goodwill s Controller. He s also very much a team-player. His treatment of co-workers and customers sets a high standard for all of us to uphold. Robert was born deaf in Germany to an American military family. His condition wasn t discovered until soon after his first birthday and doctors attributed it to the German measles his mother contracted while she was pregnant. Robert s parents didn t want him to experience life in isolation so attending public school, learning sign language and reading lips at an early age was a priority that helped Robert enjoy a well-rounded life and education. My Goodwill job is very rewarding, said Robert. And it s nice to work for an organization devoted to helping people with disabilities gain and keep jobs. Robert is an inspiration to his colleagues and the community, where he is an active member of his church and the Greater New Orleans Association for the Deaf. He constantly challenges himself to do better and offers this advice to anyone looking to be successful in the workplace. You have to apply yourself and always work to improve your communication skills. Most of all, be true to yourself, never give up and always do your best, says Robert. Mary Deacy Mary s Story I was homeless and found out about Goodwill s culinary arts program, said Mary Deacy, who recently graduated from the program. It gave me this encouraging lift like there is light at the end of the tunnel. Instructor Chef Myers was the key to the whole program because he made you feel like you were somebody, says Mary. Goodwill s Culinary Arts Training Program is an outreach program for homeless individuals and is certified by the American Culinary Federation. After successfully completing the training program, Goodwill helps students prepare for work by offering resume and employment outreach support. 5

Retail Division Starting with its own retail stores, Goodwill puts people to work. Goodwill retail stores and donation centers support training and employment programs for individuals who face barriers to employment. The gently used clothing and household items generously donated by the community help support training and employment programs for individuals with disabilities, disadvantages, and those that have lost their job due to company closing or layoff. 2011 Retail Highlights: 964,205 shopped Goodwill in 2011. 240,176 donors gave clothing or other items in 2011. Goodwill s Covington Store was relocated to a larger more centralized location offering shoppers and donors 10,000 square feet of bargains and treasures. Mark s Story Mark Franklin knows all about second chances and overcoming barriers. Twenty years ago, his life took a catastrophic turn after a gunshot wound at the age of 17 confined him to a wheelchair. Months of intensive physical therapy followed yet Mark was determined to be as mobile as possible. Never letting his disability define his capabilities, Mark moved confidently forward in seeking employment and found Goodwill. He began working at one of Goodwill s Retail Stores a few years ago and was noted for his positive attitude and solid work ethic. Mark left Goodwill but returned recently and has quickly moved up the ranks to a Keyholder position at the flagship retail store in New Orleans. Goodwill is like family to me, says Mark. I like coming to work. My job here has given me the confidence that there is nothing that I can t achieve if I set my mind to it. Congratulations to our 2011 Achiever of the Year Award Winner Jermaine Lewis Contracts Division Harvey State Building Contracts Contracts employee Jermaine Lewis has been a superstar on the scene since he first started working for Goodwill almost two years ago. He was initially referred to Goodwill s Workforce Development Department by Louisiana Rehabilitative Services. After assessing his work skills and needs, Goodwill paired Jermaine with a job coach and employed him part-time at a Custodial Contracts site. Jermaine s attention to detail and solid work ethic allowed him to excel at his craft and he soon became a full-time employee at the Harvey State Building site. Jermaine is very deserving of his recognition as the 2011 Achiever of the Year, said Sandra Monroe, Goodwill Job Developer. He is exceptionally dependable, a team player, punctual, and a hardworking employee. Contracts Division Goodwill s Commercial Services Division is a leading provider of outsourced custodial and grounds maintenance services to federal, state and local sites in Southeastern Louisiana. In 2011, Goodwill and Goodworks a subsidiary of Goodwill serviced 26 federal, state and local sites, maintaining more than 4 million square feet of space daily. Goodwill s Contract Services are competitively priced, quality assured, and support real work and training opportunities for a significant number of Goodwill s employees with disabilities. Edible s tenant products are sold in more than 1000 accounts across the region a 233 percent increase over the 2010 s distribution. As the only food business incubator in the state of Louisiana, Edible Enterprises has consulted more than 100 aspiring food companies to date serving companies from 10 parishes across Southeastern Louisiana, from St. Mary to St. Tammany, with more than half of them being women-owned businesses. There are currently 30 registered companies and 5 graduating companies who have either built or leased their own manufacturing plant. 8 9
