Transitions Whether you are entering the Coege Transfer Program as a recent high schoo graduate or returning to schoo after years of pursuing a career, your abiity to successfuy transition to new environments is an important ski to hone. Transition from High Schoo to Community Coege Time Management is key for baancing your time in cass and time for studying, homework and reading, with other responsibiities ike work and extracurricuar activities. Create a reguar schedue that incudes bocks of study time and end the habit of cramming! Facuty expectations are high. In coege, you are expected to be more independent with assignments and do more work outside of the cassroom. Facuty are aso here to hep and you wi find most of them to be very approachabe. So, don t hesitate to ask questions! Set goas - academic, career and persona. This process begins with knowing your program of study, meeting with your advisor, doing your research into four-year schoos and staying connected via Techink! Know where to get hep. Forsyth Tech supports students through a wide range of resources incuding free tutoring, computer abs, services for the disabed and assistance from the Shugart Women s Center and the James A. Rousseau II Minority Mae Mentoring Program. In addition, you shoud get to know your cassmates and facuty members - great study groups can be formed by getting connected with cassmates outside of cass. Get invoved. Four-year coeges want students who have estabished a proven record of coege success in the cassroom, but they are aso ooking for we-rounded individuas with interests outside of the cassroom. Visit the Student Activities Office for more information on getting invoved with Student Government or one of the many cubs on campus. You are taking the first step toward a four-year degree. Transition from Fu-Time Work to Fu-Time Student 12 hours of coursework doesn t mean you ony have 12 hours of work to do each week! Aow severa hours per cass to compete homework, read assignments and textbooks and study. Update computer skis, and make sure your equipment is up-to-date as we (high speed internet access wi be invauabe). Ask for hep with non-schoo responsibiities! Get famiy members and friends on board to hep with housework, carpooing and mea prep so you have the time you need to devote to your education. Working fu-time and being a fu-time student is VERY TOUGH! It can be done, but if you can cut back on work or take fewer casses it is ikey that your grades wi improve consideraby, your famiy wi ike you more and you sti be making progress toward your goa. Think of the tortoise and the hare. Taking onger to meet your goa may be the better path for success. Get academic hep when you need it! Don t wait unti you are drowning. Most Student Services offices are open unti 7 pm during the week, and some are open on Saturdays. Use campus resources - your tuition paid for them - tutoring services, computer ab, ibrary, career services, counseing, Shugart Women s Center, academic advising, etc. Stay connected. Get to know your academic advisor, know your program of study and og in to Techink. A of these resources wi assist you as you carefuy pan your educationa goas and timeines. Persona Responsibiity! You are responsibe for registering for casses, knowing important dates throughout the semester, paying tuition on time, submitting Financia Aid appications, etc. etc! Embracing this new eve of responsibiity is key to your success in coege and beyond. Baance. You have ikey gained skis in persona responsibiity and time management in your workife. Now you must earn to baance schoo, work and famiy ife; be wiing to acknowedge imitations; ask for hep and set reaistic goas and timeines. 2

Your Program of Study Forsyth Tech offers two Coege Transfer Programs of study: Associate in Arts (AA) and Associate in Science (AS). What s the difference in an AA and an AS? Which shoud I choose? The AA degree is designed for students who pan to major in non-scientific ibera arts areas, such as business, crimina justice, education, Engish, history, nursing, psychoogy, socia work, etc. The AS degree is designed for students who pan to major in math or science-based studies, incuding math or science education, bioogy, chemistry, engineering, etc. The AS degree requires higher eve math courses in addition to more science courses. The AA degree is the more fexibe of the two programs and meets the needs of students who wi major in a variety of different areas. Tak with your academic advisor about which degree is best suited for your ong term goas. If you do not know what you want to major in, the AA program of study is the best pace to start. You can aways change your program of study as you do more research and begin to hone in on your specific area of interest. The Coege aso aows students to seect a pre-major within the AA or AS (see ist at right). What s the difference in genera AA and AS degrees and pre-majors degrees? Which shoud I decare as my program of study? Pre-major refers to a specific pan of study within the AA or AS genera degree program. These pre-majors are guideines deveoped through negotiations between the NC Community Coeges and the NC University System. If you know what you want to major in, decaring a pre-major can be hepfu. If you do not know what you want to major in, a genera program of study is suggested. If you know what you want to major in and where you want to transfer, foow the pre-major guideines, and do your research. Individua coeges and major departments may have additiona requirements for their majors that are not isted in the pre-major guideines. (For exampe, many business departments now require additiona semesters of foreign anguage for their majors). Knowing eary on what you want to major in and which university you d ike to attend wi enabe you to make better decisions when given options within the genera education core. Taking the preferred courses for your major wi ensure you are better prepared to enter your major when you transfer to the senior institution. Consut your academic advisor if you are unsure which program to decare. Pre-majors Most often, the best choice is to enro in the genera degree AA or AS and contact the senior institution and your major department there for the specific courses to take at Forsyth Tech. If you know your major but haven t yet decided where you want to transfer, you can choose an appropriate pre-major and foow those genera guideines. No probem, just choose the genera AA or AS degree. Note: Some technica (AAS) degrees have the same names as some of the AA/AS concentrations isted, but the requirements for the degrees are very different. Check your program code, not just your program tite, to make sure you have enroed in the program best suited to your educationa and professiona goas. 3

Choosing a Major What about a technica Associate in Appied Science (AAS) degree? Can I sti transfer to a four-year schoo? If you woud ike to work immediatey after you graduate from Forsyth Tech and pan to continue your education ater, you may want to consider a technica AAS degree. Forsyth Tech has biatera agreements with severa pubic and private coeges that aow technica courses to transfer for coege credit in specific majors at specific coeges. Whie this type of transfer is possibe, it is not the most efficient path for students wanting to go straight through to earn their baccaaureate degree. The Comprehensive Articuation Agreement and a of its advantages (see page 7) do not appy; the number of courses that transfer is usuay ess than with an AA or AS degree and a student s choice of four-year schoos can be imited to those with whom we have the biatera agreement. Consut with a coege transfer advisor in the Student Success Center if you are pursuing an AAS degree and pan to transfer to a four-year schoo. What if I haven t decided on a major or a coege? Many students start their coege careers undecided and those who have decided on a major often change their minds. It is important, however, that you activey engage in the decision making process now. Don t wait! Why do I need to decide NOW on my major? Whie it is true that a students take a prescribed set of Genera Education Core courses, there are many options within that core. The courses you take wi depend on what you utimatey choose as your major. For exampe a pre-business major wi take different genera education courses than a pre-education major. Biatera Agreements are specific agreements between certain programs of study at Forsyth Tech and certain majors at specific coeges and universities. These agreements aow transfer of courses earned as part of an Associate in Appied Science degree that woud otherwise not transfer for coege credit. For a ist of biatera agreements, visit the Coege Transfer site in Techink or see a coege transfer advisor in the Student Success Center. The Comprehensive Articuation Agreement (CAA) governs transfer between the NC Community Coege System and the state university system. Under this agreement, students earning an Associate in Arts or Associate in Science degree are abe to transfer a 64 credit hours to senior institutions in the university system, entering the university with junior status. For more information on the CAA, see page 7. Need hep deciding on a major? Visit the Career Services site in Techink or drop by the Student Success Center, 1 st foor Aman Center, to schedue an appointment with a career counseor. To research four-year coeges, visit the Coege Foundation of North Caroina at www.cfnc.org or og in to the Coege Transfer site in Techink. The sooner you decide on a major and which four-year schoos you woud ike to attend, the more efficient your transfer experience wi be. 4

Transfer Requirements Minimum Course Requirements (MCR) Meeting MCR does not guarantee admission to a senior institution. Appicants who are at east 24 years of age may be exempted from the MCR. Are you under 24 years of age? If yes, then whie in high schoo, did you meet the MCR, as stated beow? If your year of graduation was 2004 or 2005, in order to meet MCR you must have competed the foowing during high schoo: 4 courses in Engish 2 courses in the same foreign anguage (American Sign Language wi fufi this requirement) 3 courses in mathematics (Agebra I, Geometry, and Agebra II) 2 courses in socia studies (incuding one course in U.S. History) 3 courses in science (incuding a course in ife or bioogica science and a course in physica science; at east one aboratory science) Students under the age of 24 must meet high schoo MCR to be considered for admission to a North Caroina system university (as estabished by the Board of Governors of the University of North Caroina system). If your graduation year was 2006 to the present, in order to meet MCR you must have competed the foowing during high schoo: 4 courses in Engish 2 courses in the same foreign anguage (American Sign Language wi fufi this requirement) 4 courses in mathematics (Agebra I, Geometry, and Agebra II, and a higher eve math for which Agebra II is a prerequisite) 2 courses in socia studies (incuding one course in U.S. History) 3 courses in science (incuding a course in ife or bioogica science and a course in physica science; at east one aboratory science) 5

When Can I Transfer? Determining Factors for Deciding When to Transfer There are many factors that wi determine the best point of transfer for you. Things to consider incude: Minimum Course Requirements (MCR). If you did not meet the MCRs whie in high schoo, you must compete at east those 30 hours of specific courses (see ist at right) in order to be eigibe to transfer. Your high schoo performance and SAT/ACT scores. If your high schoo record is not as exempary as you woud ike, it is to your benefit to remain at the community coege ong enough to estabish a soid record of success incuding a good Grade Point Average (GPA) (the higher the better), eadership experience, good references, etc. Finances. Tuition and fees are ess expensive at a community coege than at a university. Housing expenses and commuting costs shoud aso be considered. Your major. There are benefits to transferring eary in particuar majors ike engineering and performing arts, for exampe. Pubic vs. private coege for transfer. Decide eary where you pan to transfer and do your research. Severa private coeges and universities, both in-state and out-of-state, have signed on to the Comprehensive Articuation Agreement (CAA), meaning you woud have a the same benefits as transferring to a NC pubic university. For more information on the CAA, see page 7. For a ist of these private schoos that honor the CAA, pease visit the Coege Transfer site in Techink. Students who have met the MCR can transfer: At any point a senior institution chooses to accept them. Most senior institutions wi consider students for transfer admission with 30 hours or more of any coege transferabe coursework. Students with ess than this may be accepted and transfer individua courses, but they are accepted on the basis of freshman admission standards. After competing the Transfer Core Dipoma: 44-hours of Genera Education Core courses (See section A of check sheet, pages 12-15.) A fu-time student can usuay compete the Genera Education Dipoma in approximatey three semesters. After competing the Associate Degree: 64-hours tota, which incudes 44-hours of Genera Education Core courses, pus 20 hours of eectives (See section A and section B of check sheet, pages 11-14). A fu-time student can usuay compete the AA or AS in approximatey four semesters. Students who did not meet the MCR can be eigibe for transfer admission ony after competing one of the foowing options: 30 semester hours in these specific courses: 2 coege eve Engish composition courses 2 coege eve mathematics courses 2 coege eve socia science courses 2 coege eve science courses 2 coege eve foreign anguage courses After competing the Transfer Core Dipoma After competing the Associate Degree Note: GED graduates, having eft high schoo eary, are amost aways deficient in the MRC and therefore, must foow one of the above options in order to transfer (if they are under age 24). Transfer Admission 6

Benefits of Transfer Comprehensive Articuation Agreement What is it and why is it important to me? The Comprehensive Articuation Agreement (CAA) is an agreement governing transfer between the North Caroina Community Coege System and the University System of North Caroina. The agreement went into effect the fa of 1997. Under the CAA, a student earning the Genera Education Dipoma or the Associate of Arts or Associate of Science degrees is guaranteed severa benefits upon transfer. For detais on the TAAP, visit: http://www1.cfnc.org/ externascripts/taap/defaut.asp Students must meet the receiving institution s foreign anguage and/or heath and physica education requirements, if appicabe, prior to or after transfer to the senior institution. Foreign anguage requirements can typicay be met by taking two semesters of a foreign anguage as part of the genera education core humanities requirement. Note: The CAA does not appy in cases where a student has transfer credit from a coege or university that is not fuy regionay accredited; has credit based on quarter hours; or is using CLEP credit as part of their degree program. CAA: Dipoma and Associate Degree Transfer Core Dipoma = 44 hours in the Genera Education Core: Associate in Arts (A10100): 2 Engish composition 4 socia/behaviora science 4 humanities/fine arts 2 mathematics 2 natura science Associate in Science (A10400): 2 Engish composition 3 socia/behaviora science 3 humanities/fine arts 5 natura science/mathematics With a C or better in every course, you can transfer a courses to the institution that accepts you.
