+ Banking and Finance Accountancy Financial Services Banking Insurance There has been a much welcomed increase in opportunities for individuals across the Banking, Insurance, Accountancy and Finance markets in Northern Ireland in the last 12 months. These opportunities have arisen from both established companies wishing to increase headcount and new companies setting up Shared Service Centres in Northern Ireland. Even with the movement these new roles have created, the competition remains high for good quality positions. Clients are still looking for those candidates who stand out from the rest of the job seekers. There is also recognition amongst Hiring Managers that the best candidates are likely to have multiple options, resulting in shorter, faster moving, recruitment processes. This is a marked contrast to the cautious buyers market view amongst hirers that has been prevalent in recent years. The SME market has seen some improvement, specifically in the Agri-food, FMCG and Manufacturing sectors, with the requirement for commercial Accountants and Analysts to identify and drive cost reductions and operating efficiencies. Movement at senior level within SMEs has gathered momentum in 2014 after a couple of stagnant years. People who were only tentatively looking at new opportunities previously are now fully committed to finding a new role as more positions have become available. This is essential to continue the recruitment cycle and keep the market buoyant. The flow of talent back into the Northern Ireland market from ROI and the UK increased again in 2014 with most candidates citing a perceived improvement in the local market as the most common reason. The continuing increase of Finance Shared Service Centres being set up in Belfast has increased salary levels for candidates with experience in this environment. This is even more prevalent in those that require Finance staff with a second language. This remains a challenging area for clients and is unlikely to ease much in the first half of 2015. 12 www.graftonrecruitment.com phone: +44 (0) 28 9024 2824
The Qualified market has continued to improve and clients have indicated that cautious optimism will continue in 2015. In the newly qualified market - Industry qualified, traditional Management Accountants are still very much the hire of choice for SMEs, in comparson to the technical skill set of Financial Accountants still required by the larger corporate clients. As two of the Big 4 firms have announced planned increases over the next few years in both experienced and graduate level hires this will have an impact on the supply of these levels of candidates. There has been an increased trend of ACA qualified Accountants moving from traditional Audit roles into other growing parts of the same firm such as Forensics and Consulting. In the broader Financial Services market there is still demand for good IFAs but clients are holding out for those with an existing portfolio where possible. Changes in legislation means compliance requirements have been further enhanced which has resulted in a continued hunger for individuals with strong regulatory experience. This is certain to continue over the next 12 months. The part-qualified and transactional Finance roles rose steadily in 2014. Credit Controllers are still in demand along with Account Payable staff as companies keep control of their cash flow. Grafton Recruitment has also dealt with a higher number of Assistant Accountant roles in the last 12 months which shows clients are rebuilding their Finance teams as conditions continue to improve. As banks are lending again there is an increased appetite for experienced Bankers with local knowledge. This is a notable change from the sector s emphasis on hiring those with credit skills over the two previous years. www.graftonrecruitment.com phone: +44 (0) 28 9024 2824 13
+ Accountancy Financial Director Finance Manager Financial Controller Business Analyst Salaries have seen a slight increase as companies continue to remove pay freezes and increase benefits to retain staff in a more buoyant market. Salary levels are expected to increase further, albeit at a slow rate through 2015. The number of roles for qualified Accountants increased in the We have also seen a slight increase in roles within the SME market with companies realising that having strong finance staff is critical to the health of their business. Credit control, accounts assistants and qualified by experience (QBE) roles have all had an upward trend. second half of 2014 and this trend is likely to continue. The increased investment in the Northern Ireland market by global professional organisations has had a positive impact on the transactional/part qualified sector of the recruitment market. In particular, graduates, part qualified and finance processing role volumes have all increased whilst there has also been an upward shift in salaries for these roles due to competition for the best quality candidates. With more large organisations creating shared services centres, this trend should continue throughout 2015. 14 www.graftonrecruitment.com phone: +44 (0) 28 9024 2824

+ Public Practice Partner Director Senior Manager Newly Qualified Public practice remains strong in Northern Ireland although this is an extremely competitive sector when it comes to candidates. The variation in package offered by the Big 4 firms for recently qualified ACAs is minimal, resulting in a lack of incentive for experienced candidates to move. This, as always, creates opportunities for those who have qualified at a smaller firm to make the move up. Although the newly qualified candidate shortage is across most practice disciplines, audit and assurance probably suffers the most, which is down to these teams ramping up as new business is won. in demand for business recovery candidates is also indicative of an improving economic situation. Salaries have increased, but only slightly. This may be, partly, down to the competitive market when it comes to attracting new hires and partly from the need to retain staff and stop them moving to another firm. There seems to be more flexibility around salaries and overall packages in most firms as they appreciate this may be required to land the best talent. + Contact Centres & Multilingual Operations Manager Workforce Planner Team Leader Customer Service Agent This sector continues to be highly competitive, with a number of multinational companies making Northern Ireland their chosen destination for call centre and shared services activities. This has led to higher volumes of candidates being recruited than for most other sectors and demand remains steady throughout the calendar year. Customer service, sales, technical support and order management roles are typical of volume requirements in this sector. The sector, more so than others has a sizeable requirement for candidates with foreign language skills, the reason being that shared service centres in Ireland typically provide support for customers across Europe. The main languages in demand are German, French, Norwegian, Danish, Finnish and Dutch, while Spanish and Italian language skills are also required in most call centres. In some cases, language bonuses will be provided to candidates who speak more than one foreign language (trilingual candidates). Due to continuing high demand and a limited supply of candidates with certain languages, companies continue to react to this by amending their interview and on-boarding process to ensure a timely and efficient hiring process. This can include phone or video interviews rather than face to face meetings and offering a relocation package to include flights and initial accommodation for new hires who are based abroad, thus increasing their search pool for multilingual candidates. A high turnover of staff can unfortunately be symptomatic of the repetitive nature of some call centre roles, particularly outbound sales, with the average employee remaining in place for 12 18 months. However, graduates with 6 12 months experience continue to be attracted to these roles by the prospect of working for large multinationals and gaining experience in a process driven team environment with formal training, meaning that newly qualified candidates are becoming available each year. Companies in certain industries are forced to offer more competitive salaries as competition for experienced candidates (particularly with foreign language skills) is high. This is particularly true of banking and gaming companies. 24 www.graftonrecruitment.com phone: +44 (0) 28 9024 2824

+ Sales and Marketing Business Development Manager Sales Manager Marketing Manager Telesales Manager Sales and marketing salaries have remained largely stable in Northern Ireland for the last year. Some niche areas have witnessed a marginal increase (2% to 4%), including those aligned with a requirement for online expertise. Specifically, there is a demand for skills to harness information from digital platforms to drive organisational growth. In direct correlation, the print and media industry remains largely in troubled times as digital methods of promotion become ever more prevalent. Marketing budgets continue to be moved into online channels and so demand for digital marketing professionals increases. There are different trends in disposable income with an increase of 15% on lower income groups and decrease of 3% in higher income groups. + Human Resources HR Director Compensation & Benefits Manager Training & Development Manager Recruitment Specialist There has been a steady flow of contract and temporary positions at all levels, interspersed with demands for permanent professionals. Although still a little unpredictable, all signs point to a steady improvement moving into 2015. With increased confidence in the market, HR professionals have been more active in their job searches and are making positive career moves. This healthy development explains the peaks of permanent recruitment throughout this year, with natural turnover prompting job re-evaluations and back-fills. Organisations are now welcoming the opportunity to reward their staff with training and up-skilling and there has been greater emphasis on employee engagement and motivational initiatives. This is particularly prevalent in organisations which employ specialist staff, or those in high demand e.g. IT developers, design/electronic engineering, multilingual or strong business developers. It also occurs within these organisations where there is demand for dedicated in-house resourcing specialists. Those who can be proactive and use creative attraction methods remain in demand. Salary levels moving into 2015 remain steady, with average pay increases between 2.5% to 3.5%. The calibre of HR professionals across NI is excellent. Academic and professional CIPD qualification results are impressive and this makes for a very competitive, candidate rich market. With this being the case, companies are more inclined to review practical work experience and focus on cultural fit and capabilities. This has been an interesting time for the HR market, with consistent contract positions interspersed with a broad range of permanent generalist and specialist opportunities. It is difficult to predict a definitive trend moving into 2015; however, signs point to a steady improvement in permanent roles coupled with continued demand for contract and temporary HR resources. 32 www.graftonrecruitment.com phone: +44 (0) 28 9024 2824

+ Engineering & Manufacturing Product Design Engineer CAD Technician Mechanical Engineer Facilities Manager In the last 12 months there has been an increase in engineering, manufacturing and construction job opportunities. According to Northern Ireland Centre of Economic Policy, the growth for 2014 was forecast at 4.4% across engineering and manufacturing, while construction saw an increase in 2.1%. With significant plans for growth right up to 2020 engineering, manufacturing & construction will continue to expand and have a huge demand for skilled candidates. Similarly to last year the market remains highly competitive for candidates and is driven by the candidate s choice. Companies have found it increasingly difficult to attract skilled engineers in the following areas; design, maintenance, electronics, manufacturing and engineering. As a result the market will become smaller for qualified and experienced candidates and we may see salaries increasing in order to meet the demand versus supply. There has been a mix of graduate and experienced level opportunities within an array of engineering and manufacturing companies. This is set to continue in 2015 with companies having a new found appreciation for investing in talented people. It is a highly competitive industry for talent at present and this is not set to change, especially with further growth and investment in the engineering sector and the development of an entrepreneurial base for new set-up organisations. 34 www.graftonrecruitment.com phone: +44 (0) 28 9024 2824
