Mapping the Studio Artists from the François Pinault Collection Architecture: Tailor-Made Tours Punta della Dogana in Venice opened its doors to the public on 6 June 2009, joining Palazzo Grassi as an exhibition venue for the François Pinault Foundation Centre of Contemporary Art. The restoration of the seventeenth-century Dogana da Mar, the former maritime customs house, was designed by the Japanese architect Tadao Ando, who thus completed the work he began in Venice with the refurbishment of Palazzo Grassi. Palazzo Grassi was the last private residence built on the Grand canal before the fall of the Venetian Republic in 1797. Here, Ando worked upon the building as restored by Gae Aulenti and Antonio Foscari in 1985. Sober and minimalist, the new work focuses upon details which exploit the essential space of the building as a whole. The colour scheme is predicated upon white and grey, creating within each room the sort of serene calm necessary for the contemplation of the works on display. This colour choice together with the fibreglass velarium diffusing a clear, ambient light, the new system of lighting and the white cornices that do not actually touch the original walls all respect the history of the Palazzo whilst bringing it into the twenty-first century. At Punta della Dogana, Ando s work was both imposing and delicate, serving to enhance the powerful personality of the place itself. The project envisaged the preservation of the original walls and ceiling beams, together with the addition of dividing walls in reinforced concrete that serve to define the exhibition spaces and, through contrast, highlight the character of the existing structure s materials and features. Located in the space that was once occupied by an internal courtyard, the central cube in concrete becomes the pulsing heart of the entire structure, a sort of sacred place housing its genius loci. In transforming the old warehouses into an exhibition venue for a great collection of contemporary art a place that combines memory with innovation, ancient fabric with modern aesthetic and functional standards Ando achieves a brilliant pairing of visual perfection and extreme simplicity. His intervention is both spectacular and discreet, respectful and daring. And the result is a world outside of time in a place that has no parallel anywhere else in the world a place that enables visitors to enjoy extraordinary works of art, architecture of the highest quality and the full charm and fascination of Venice itself. In occasion of the exhibition Mapping the Studio, Palazzo Grassi and Punta della Dogana are offering a special service of tailor-made guided tours which will enable a public of enthusiasts to fully explore the two spaces. Led by specialist guides, the tours are intended for scholars, architects, those working in the construction sector and those with a passionate interest in architecture. The visitors will thus have the opportunity to explore the history of the two buildings, to learn about the various phases of the design project and conservation work and, of course, to visit one of the world s greatest collections of contemporary art.
