Slide 4 What is a practicum? Practicum is the first step on the path of professional development toward becoming a competent psychologist Organized, sequential, graduated, congruent with goals and objectives of the program Introduces students to the core competencies of psychology Integrated with the other training components of the program (e.g. courses) Prepare students for internship Slide 5 Practicum students are typically in their first through third year of doctoral training Students may require more oversight and guidance No stipend requirement Slide 6 Requirements Hours of practicum varies depending on the organization ASPPB 1500 hours Widener (IGCP) 1632 hours 25% face-to-face client contact Assessment, diagnosis, interventions At least one hour of individual supervision per week Written training plan between the student, the practicum training site, and the graduate training program

Slide 13 Training at the Internship Level Importance of APA-accreditation APA Model Licensure Act (2010) requires that all licensed psychologists complete an APA-accredited internship by 2017 Provides a degree of protection and assurance to potential applicants Peer review of program and transparency in requirements Ensures quality and commitment to recognized standards of training Programs can attract higher-quality applicants Eligibility for funding and grants Eligibility for future employment (e.g., federal settings) Slide 14 Internship Statistics 2015 Match Data from APPIC Applicants: Initially registered: 4,247 Withdrawn or not submitting ranks: 242 Participating in Match: 4,005 Matched: 3,569 Unmatched: 436 Positions: Initially offered: 3,701 Withdrawn or not submitting ranks: 49 Participating in Match: 3,652 (APA-accredited: 2,703) Matched: 3,569 Unmatched: 83 If all positions were filled, there would still be 353 applicants without an internship this year Slide 15 APPIC Association of Psychology Postdoctoral and Internship Centers Website: www.appic.org Paper review of programs for membership Runs yearly internship match through National Matching Services (NMS) Fees: Membership application fee: $300 (initial application) $450/year for a single program (internship or postdoc) or $700/year for combined program Match participation fee: $115/year ($240/year for non- APPIC members) APPIC renewal fee: $250 every 3 years for programs not accredited by APA
Slide 16 APPIC Membership Criteria Emphasis must be on training, not on revenue-generation or productivity Must have an identified training director, who is employed at least 20 hours per week on-site At least 2 FTE licensed psychologists on staff as supervisors Training is provided in a range of assessment and intervention activities At least 2 hours per week of individual, face-to-face supervision required At least 25% of intern time is dedicated to face-to-face clinical services Sites need to provide a minimum of 2 hours per week of didactic seminars Slide 17 APPIC Membership Criteria Training is beyond practicum-level, and occurs before doctoral degree is granted Site has a minimum of 2 interns during any training year Interns have an appropriate title Site has written materials that are available to prospective interns Due process procedures must be documented Minimum hour requirement: 1500 Interns must receive a certificate of completion Interns must be formally evaluated at least twice per year Stipends must be provided and must be fair and reasonable Slide 18 APA Standards of Accreditation 2012: APA began a process of revision of the Guidelines and Principles for Accreditation Between July 2012 and June 2014, APA drafted standards and elicited public comment February 2015: new Standards of Accreditation approved by APA Governance Can be viewed here: http://www.apa.org/ed/accreditation/accreditationroadmap.aspx New standards scheduled to take effect September 1, 2016 Provide standards for doctoral programs, internships, and postdoctoral programs

Slide 25 QUESTIONS ON INTERNSHIP? Slide 26 Training at the Postdoctoral Level Postdoctoral Fellows have received their doctoral degrees Dissertation must have been successfully defended Internship must have been successfully completed Can sometimes start accumulating hours before the official degree award date, if receive a letter from doctoral program stating that all requirements have been met Postdoctoral requirements vary from state to state depending on licensure requirements Some specialties also have specific requirements (e.g., neuropsychology) APPIC has postdoctoral program members (176 sites as of 6/8/2015); APA also has accredited postdoctoral programs (111 sites as of 6/8/2015) Slide 27 PA Postdoctoral Requirements Must complete a minimum of 1750 hours in no less than 12 months Must be a minimum of 15 hours per week, and a maximum of 45 hours per week 50% of time (875 hours) must be spent in the following activities: diagnosis, assessment, therapy, other interventions, supervision/consultation, and individual supervision received as a supervisee Additional time (above the 50% minimum) may be counted in teaching or research Must be completed within 10 years of doctoral degree If experience is obtained at more than one organization: Must last for at least 6 months Must be a minimum of 15 hours per week, with total across settings <45 hours per week
Slide 28 PA Postdoctoral Requirements Title Needs to be Psychology Resident or Psychology Trainee or similar Supervisor Requirements Must be licensed Must own, be an employee of, or have a contract with the agency/organization where the fellow is working Must maintain notes of supervision sessions Must prepare initial goals for supervision and quarterly evaluations Must meet face-to-face with supervisee for a minimum of 2 hours per week Must complete a doctoral course in supervision or 3 CE course (effective 12/1/2015) Must observe the fellow directly or via recordings on at least a quarterly basis Slide 29 APPIC Has a centralized application (APPA) Allows applicants to complete 1 application for multiple sites Sites must be APPIC postdoctoral members Has a suggested uniform notification date (usually in mid-february) Emphasis is on clinical postdoctoral sites, rather than those that are primarily research-oriented Neuropsychology sites have their own match process Slide 30 APPIC Membership Requirements Must be an organized and sequential training program, with specific training goals and objectives Must have an identified postdoctoral training director Minimum of 2 licensed psychologists on staff Minimum of 2 hours of individual, face-to-face supervision per week Minimum of 2 hours of learning activities per week At least 25% of the time must be in direct clinical service Must have a minimum of 1 postdoctoral fellow (must be on-site at time of application) Title must be intern, resident, fellow, or similar Written documents available: goals/objectives, due process and grievance procedures, methods of evaluation Minimum of 1500 hours; minimum of 9 months, maximum of 24 months Certificate of completion granted at end Fellows must be appropriately compensated
Slide 31 APA New standards have postdoctoral requirements Can be accredited in an advanced area of health service psychology (i.e., clinical, counseling, school) or a specialty area (as designated by CRSPPP or ABPP) Length: minimum of 12 months full-time, maximum of 24 months part-time, with some specialties requiring longer periods Fellows must be compensated in a fair and equitable manner Must be evaluated at least twice per year Slide 32 APA Specific competencies required of all postdoctoral fellowships: Integration of science and practice Individual and cultural diversity Ethical and legal conduct Additionally, programs may have program-specific or specialty-specific competencies Must provide learning activities (e.g., didactics, grand rounds, conferences, group supervisions) Must provide at least 2 hours per week of individual supervision Must evaluate fellows, alumni, and program itself Need at least 2 doctoral-level licensed psychologists Slide 33 Setting Up a Postdoctoral Fellowship Challenges Funding (cannot bill private insurance) Specialized vs. generalized?
