The English Options For degrees in Israel
Why study in Israel? Israel can offer you quality higher education of the world's highest standards. There are a vast range of study programs for students interested in the unique opportunity of gaining a valuable qualification at the same time as undergoing the experience of a lifetime. Where else can you qualify yourself & strengthen your Jewish identity simultaneously? Where else can you face history & discover your roots, while preparing yourself for the challenges of the future? Add to this the relatively low cost of higher education in Israel, and the fact that new immigrants in Israel receive financial aid, and the question becomes: Why NOT study in Israel?! 2
Why study in English? It may seem like the easy option, but let us look at the pros and cons: The pros: You can begin your studies immediately with your Aliyah, and fulfill two dreams at once: getting qualified and being in Israel! Your degree will be recognized the world over, you will undoubtedly meet interesting people from all over the world, and enjoy the experience of discovering your Jewish roots in the homeland. You can concentrate on your studies, keep up your good grades, and not worry about tackling academic Hebrew as well. The cons: The number of study options in English is limited, and the tuition is considerably more expensive. The academic institutions in Israel have developed various international graduate programs, but there are few undergraduate options. Since the Student Authority tuition grant will not cover your full fees, you will have to pay the difference. You will find fewer opportunities to mix with Israeli students, and you are less likely to improve your Hebrew being immersed in an English-speaking environment. When you finish your studies & go out into the job market you will be faced with the hurdle you have been avoiding as a student: HEBREW! So what about your Hebrew? Even if you decide to study in English, you still have the right to ulpan, and to the pre-academic programs run by the Student Authority. Please Note: Students studying in English are required by the Student Authority to present proof of completion of level Alef Hebrew by the end of their second year of studies. Exempt from this are students who did the University Preparatory Program or the Taka Program, or students with an Israeli Bagrut or who took the psychometric exam in Hebrew. 3
Making a decision! Before you make a decision about your course of studies we recommend that you also check out the Hebrew language options. Thousands of students from all over the world are studying in Israel in Hebrew, most of them never imagined they could do it, but yes it is possible! There are special programs to prepare immigrant students for studying in Hebrew, a n d most bibliographies include many articles in English. Dependent on the subject you are studying and your particular lecturer, it is possible to hand in papers and do exams in English, at least during the first year. Studying in Hebrew obligates you to learn the language, which is really the key to successful integration into Israeli society and the job market. If you are making Aliyah you are making a huge change in your life, and part of that change is coping with the language of the country you are moving to. 4
The Israel Student Authority "Minhal Hastudentim" Who are we? The Israel Student Authority operates through the Ministry of Immigrant Absorption, in collaboration with the Jewish Agency for Israel. Israel sets a high priority in attracting young students from abroad to its study programs and universities. One of the ways that this is expressed is in the generous assistance given to immigrant (olim) students. Olim are the only students who enjoy scholarships that are not dependent on one s socioeconomic status, study program or country of origin. The Israel Student Authority is a vital link between the immigrant student and higher education in Israel. We provide information and advice to students still abroad, assist students study successfully and integrate into Israeli academia. We run programs for social integration to encourage a sense of belonging and identity, and provide information and guidance to assist new immigrant students during their studies. 5
What is the assistance available to the immigrant student? Regular tuition grants for up to 3 years: for undergraduate or graduate or certificate studies or practical engineering studies. Pre-academic programs to prepare the immigrant student for academic studies in Israel. A network of councelors & guides for students on a group and an individual basis. Counseling, information & advice on higher education in Israel. Extra tutoring & academic support. Please note: The Student Authority pays a tuition grant per academic year, and according to academic credits. This means that the amount of assistance you will receive will change dependent upon how many academic courses you are taking each year. Please check with the Student Authority for your exact entitlement. Study tracks in English generally cost considerably more than the equivalent studies in Hebrew, therefore our tuition grant does not cover the full cost of such studies, and the student must pay the difference. Your final year of assistance is conditional upon participation in "Shahak": community work. Conditions for receiving assistance: Status: immigrant\returning minor\citizen born abroad as defined by the Ministry of Immigrant Absorption. Period of stay in Israel: must begin studies within 36 months of receiving status, not including army service. Age: on commencing studies: For Mechina before 23rd birthday For Undergraduate degree or certificate studies before 27th birthday. For Practical engineers before 28the birthday For Graduate studies before 30th birthday Academic Conditions: High school completion. Meeting acceptance criteria of the institution. Passing from one academic year to the next. Studies in institutions & study tracks recognized by the Student Authority. There is no assistance for repeating a degree, other than exceptional cases. 6
