Egypt Egypt Land of the Pharaohs Tutankhamun mask Egypt was one of the world s first centres of civilisation and its history stretches back 6,000 years. Such a heritage has left the country with an unsurpassed collection of relics of antiquity. Whilst the Pyramids amongst the world s largest constructions are the most famous, Roman ruins, Byzantine churches and exquisitely decorated mosques testify to the various cultures that influenced the country over the millennia. It is not just the Pharaonic monuments that have drawn travellers to this country, but also the legacy of the Greeks, Romans and early Christians and the profusion of art and architecture accumulated from centuries of successive Islamic dynasties. What makes Egypt unique is the diversity of the product it offers. Nowhere else can one combine business with historical tours, mountain treks, Nile cruises, desert safaris, Red Sea diving, Mediterranean beaches, spas and shopping. When it comes to cultural and natural attractions, Egypt knows no bounds. From the Great Pyramids at Giza, Khan-El-Khalili Bazaar and the Egyptian Museum of Antiquities, Cairo offers a wide array of attractions. To the north, Alexandria offers a seat of classical learning, while the Qait Bey Citadel, catacombs, Roman amphitheatre and the Alexandria Museum are popular attractions of the city. Located south of Cairo and on the Nile, Luxor and Thebes have often been referred to as the world s largest open-air museum. These cities provide awe-inspiring trips around Luxor and Karnak Temples and the Valley of the Kings, home to the famous Tutankhamun tomb. The great thing about Egypt s many historical attractions is that they offer visitors the chance to get up close and really experience them firsthand. The Nile River has played an important role in Egypt s daily life since time immemorial and continues to act as a life-giving artery flowing 190

It was a crucial mode of transport between upper and lower Egypt but to the ancient Egyptians, it was more than this. It would be used for their final journey from this life to the afterlife. The Nile provides a unique way of experiencing the country s many attractions. The Nile cruise is a journey through time that allows visitors a chance to discover Egypt s momentous history. The Red Sea coast is a great all-year-round destination for family holidays and sports enthusiasts. The mythical Sinai and the desert to the west of the Nile are perfect for trekking, not to mention the unforgettable cruises on the Nile. Egypt also has wonderful beaches on both the Mediterranean Sea and the Red Sea. The 21st century is very much in evidence in comfortable hotels, busy casinos, lively nightclubs, comprehensive entertainment and the beach resort of Sharm El Sheikh on the Red Sea coast, famous for its diving and magnificent beaches.
