SOLUTION PROFILE we enable you to lower your total cost of ownership (TCO), more easily meet SLAs, and improve your operational flexibility and efficiency. The Hitachi Vision for Telco Cloud Services The cloud is not a single product, but rather a new way to deliver IT services. Telcos today are looking to transition their data centers to leverage the benefits of the cloud, and they want choices. Depending on a variety of factors, including cost, data and information sensitivity, and an organization s internal resources, telecoms might choose a private, public or hybrid cloud. As telecoms assess their own IT data center growth plans, and as they evaluate how to expand their networks to accommodate new value-added services, IT executives are insisting on tying costs to revenue and service levels. Hitachi Data Systems is expanding not only our product lines, but also the way that we propose bringing these infrastructures to the telecom industry. With the Hitachi Cloud Solution Packages, Hitachi Data Systems provides 4 ways to acquire infrastructure for your IT data center, your network, or your services data center. You can deploy complete Hitachi Unified Compute Platform resources (compute, network, storage) within or outside your organization by leveraging Hitachi Cloud Services. Overview: The Challenges of Data Growth and Stale Data The ever-increasing complexity of data centers and the massive growth of data are multiplying the number of compute capabilities and resources required to store, process, optimize and serve information back to end users. Attempting to address these issues, organizations have rapidly adopted virtualization and are now looking to cloud delivery service models to reduce
3 Figure 3. Capabilities and Challenges Answered by IaaS and SaaS costs, increase flexibility and improve time to market. Cloud s ability to grow and contract storage resources, in concert with business needs, eliminates upfront capex for underutilized assets and minimizes opex due to continual data growth and management complexity. By deploying cloud models and leveraging cloud-managed services, organizations only pay for what they consume and eliminate the day-to-day management tasks, all together (see Figure 4). Most organizations are experiencing massive growth of data, and not just block data from billing or customer records. New and growing data sources include file data from video, object data, drawings, architectural maps, sound clips and location maps. Data is often customized to the individual customer, making it grow large. This growth is not just due to overall capacity the data requires, but also because the network and customer behavioral analytics run for such applications become deep and broad. To address the growth, many organizations have built large NAS and SharePoint environments that have become both complex to manage and costly to operate. Such environments also take precious resources away from the most active and frequently accessed data. Research has found that roughly 80% of the data residing in primary storage is stale. This stale data requires constant backup and management, which in turn consumes more capacity and IT resources. In addition, most of the stale data resides on Tier 1 storage, causing the overall TCO for this environment to be very high. Figure 4. Content Cloud Solution for Telcos Storage and Software (as a Service) in the Infrastructure Cloud With the explosive growth of unstructured data, many organizations are challenged with: Cost of storing and managing stale data on primary storage. Proliferation of file and SharePoint servers, both local and remote. Poor utilization. Uneven cost-to-value ratio of data and storage. Increasing management costs and complexity. Slowing performance of primary systems. Massive expansion of backup volumes and shrinking backup windows. Software-as-a-service and infrastructureas-a-service offerings as delivered by Hitachi Cloud Services address these challenges. Leverage Your Cloud Delivery Model Hitachi Cloud Services Hitachi Cloud Services providers offer solutions that directly address these challenges in a scalable, easily provi-
SOLUTION PROFILE sioned, pay-per-use approach. By leveraging a cloud delivery model, organizations can reduce costs, allow seamless access to tiered data and simplify management. They can improve the efficiency and longevity of their primary NAS and SharePoint environments by: Moving legacy or lower value file data to cloud storage. Aligning payment to consumption (only paying for the storage that they consume when they consume it). Eliminating the need for any resources to manage the environment. Hitachi Cloud Services are integrated, fully managed, usage-based services. They move unstructured data into a cloud storage environment built on Hitachi technology at a site managed by a service provider partner of HDS. The organization only pays for the storage that is used. Management overhead is reduced, with the resources and skills needed to optimize the storage environment provided by our partner. Administrators can request additional storage when required via the partner s self-service portal. The requests are fulfilled based on the policies and SLAs contracted by our partner and the organization. Benefits of Hitachi Cloud Services Hitachi Cloud Services allow organizations to tier multiple locally and remotely located NAS files and SharePoint content to their resident cloud infrastructure. By deploying a cloud service delivery model, organizations are able to consume resources as a service and pay only for those resources they use. This capability allows them to reduce the footprint of primary storage systems. They can also gain opex and capex savings, simplify IT management, and begin the path to a true information cloud. Hitachi Cloud Services Connection Hitachi Cloud Services Connection is potentially good for local telcos and service providers. The program allows you to deliver cloud services that are more cost-effective to manage. Best of all, your end users do not need resources to manage the private cloud environment. They can move legacy or lower value file data to cloud storage and only pay for the storage that they consume in monthly subscription. Efficient use of compute, network and storage resources answers the objective of lowering overall costs. Capacity is requested and provisioned from the self-service portal, allowing the delivery of additional storage as needed. The Hitachi Cloud Service for Content Archiving takes this approach one step further: It combines superior Hitachi Data Systems data management technologies and global sales and services capabilities with managed services and cloud delivery capabilities offered by our cloud services partners. Thus, we can now deliver fully integrated, public or hybrid cloud business solutions customized to your telco applications. Our solutions range from operations support systems (OSS) to business Figure 5. Hitachi Cloud Services software systems (BSS), customer resource management (CRM), and business intelligence (BI). Hitachi Cloud Services not only can be deployed faster, but they also can expand and be managed more efficiently. Efficiency, resilience, search, security and independence: These qualities are all architected into solutions that scale to your company s objectives and volumes (see Figure 5). Moving less active data to the infrastructure cloud relieves the bloat in primary systems for immediate return on investment (ROI). It also pays continuing returns through our integrated search capability, helping extract value from relevant information when it is needed. Without the burden of all that goes into maintaining the majority of your data, you can focus your resources on accomplishing your goals. This information repository enables better search, mining and analysis to find relevant information and generate new and useful insights. Consider the Hitachi cloud offerings as a tier that competes with off-line tape, but delivers the performance required to meet your customers need for access to legacy and historical data.

Hitachi Cloud Services: 3 Solutions Hitachi Cloud Services providers give organizations a choice of cloud storage options, depending on their specific needs. These services include: Hitachi Cloud Service for Private File Tiering This solution package is designed to help organizations optimize their primary NAS environments. It enables them to assess the usage and priority of files, and move inactive ones off their primary NAS platforms into a cloud store. End users maintain online access to all content, and have the ability to exercise that access through their primary NAS by way of a placeholder or stub file. By enabling the flexible, manageable tiered storage of content to a cloud environment, Hitachi Cloud Service for Private File Tiering helps organizations improve the scalability and performance of their primary NAS infrastructures. Since scalability is achieved through the use of off-site cloud-based storage, organizations can better control, and reduce, their capex and opex. Hitachi Cloud Service for File Serving With this solution, organizations can now take advantage of bottomless file storage that is brought right to the edge. Administrators can make capacity requests on demand so their changing file storage and retrieval needs can be met quickly and efficiently. Local cache is provided to support the fast retrieval of high-priority or frequently accessed content. Multiple tenant and namespace www.hds.com/innovate capabilities enhance the solution s ability to support a number of consumers with a single instance. The solution also incorporates LDAP support and a standards-based NFS/CIFS on-ramp. With Hitachi Cloud Service for File Serving, organizations can reduce management costs at the edge and leverage the solution s compliance and retention features to minimize risk. Chargeback capabilities make possible the implementation of a utilization-based costing model, so organizations can more effectively leverage the financial benefits of the cloud. Hitachi Cloud Service for Microsoft SharePoint Archiving Many organizations use Microsoft SharePoint as a collaboration platform for sharing and managing documents and other content. Managing potentially large amounts of this content within SharePoint can be a challenge and can impact efficiency. Hitachi Cloud Services for Microsoft SharePoint Archiving gives end users a means to locate and move inactive SharePoint data out of a primary storage farm to a cloud store while giving them online access to all their content (via their primary SharePoint environment by way of a placeholder or stub file). This solution helps organizations improve the performance and scalability of their SharePoint environments, and reduce backup times and volumes as well as Microsoft SQL Server capacity costs. Additionally, improved manageability means reduced opex costs. Other value-added services will be included over time to support the efforts of organizations to store and archive various content types.
Summary Hitachi Cloud Services providers help organizations manage the explosive growth of unstructured content in their environments. They enable organizations to move legacy or lower value file data to cloud storage and only pay for the storage that they consume when they consume it. By tiering inactive content to the cloud, administrators can improve the performance, efficiency, scale and longevity of their primary storage environment. In addition, they can improve their backup and restore times. From a financial perspective, organizations can eliminate upfront capex and reduce opex by simplifying their environment and consuming storage as a service.
