! - Two Types of Indicators:! Part 1: Introduction! - - Preset indicators to assess the Env. Preformance!!(e.g.: OECD: GG headline indicators, mainly for the!!country level)! - - Organization specific defined indicators!!(guidance manual for the evaluation of indicators,!!e.g. the UNEP guidance manual on using indicators;!!and the ISO-Standards: methodology for the evaluation o!organization specific indicators)! 3
ISO TC 207 Environmental Management! Published Standards (selection):! - ISO 14001: Env. Management Systems! - ISO 14020: Env. Labels and Declarations-General Principles! - ISO 14021: Env. Labels and Declarations Self declared!!env. Claims (Type II env. Labelling)! - ISO 14024: Env. Labels and Declarations Type I Env. Labelling-!!Principles and Procedures! - ISO/DIS 14031: Env. Management Env. Performance Evaluation-!!Guidelines! - ISO 14040: Env. Management Life cycle assessment-!!principles and Framework! - ISO 14044: Env. ISO 14031; 4.1.2 Indicators for EPE Two categories of indicators for EPE:! i. Environmental condiction indicators (ECIs):!!> provide information about the condition of the!!environment which could be impacted by the organization.!! ii. Environmental performance indicators (EPIs):!!!a) Management performance indicators (MPIs):!!> provide information about management efforts to influence the!!environmental performance of the organiziation s operations.!!b) Operational performance indicators (OPIs):!!> provide information about the environmental performance of the!!organization ss operations. 8

Part 3: Case study! Environmental Management! Waste treament AVAG Ltd,! Thun (Switzerland)! Comparative LCA! Waste transport! 10
11
12
KVA Thun: Transport of waste actually: Railway between Wimmis and Thun (Scheme) Emmenmatt N 15 km Incinerator plant (K VA Thun) Brienz Interlaken Wimmis Zweisimmen Frutigen Collecting locations Saanen reloading for railway transport Transport by railway Railway Wimmis-Thun Transport by lorry 13
Case study: functional unit: transport of one waste container! 14
Case study: Data set OPI for the present transport with railway! 15
Case study: Env. Condition Indicator (ECI): NOx-Immissions! 16
Case study: Env. Condition Indicator (ECI): PM10-Immissions! 17
18
Case study: Data set OPI for the OPTION lorry! 19
Case study: Comparison of the data sets: actual situation and OPTION lorry! 20
Case study: Proposal for the future transport of waste! Process 1: Transport of waste between Wimmis and Thun Proposal: Based on the comparative LCA for the process 1 'transport of waste' between Wimmis and Thun the following proposal is given: changing the combined transport (railway/lorry) to a pure lorry transport. Reason: Per functional unit the reduction of emissions are: for NOx: 0.727 kg, for PM10: 0.1893 kg and for CO2: 28.61 kg. 21

Final remarks! The ISO 14031 EPE describes an effective way, to implement Envir.! Performance Indicators in a coherent, transparent and cost effective! way:! - in Env. Management Systems (ISO 14001)! - for Envir. Declarations (ISO 14025);! - for Envir. Labelling (ISO 14020, ISO 14021, ISO 14024) and! - for Life Cycle Assessment (ISO 14040; ISO 14044)! ISO Standards help to harmonize approaches to work with! organization specific indicators.! 24
