CC 881 ADVANCED MARRIAGE COUNSELING ASHLAND THEOLOGICAL SEMINARY Spring Quarter 2014 Clinical Mental Health Counseling Program Linda D Kelso, MA, PCC- S lkelso@ashland.edu COURSE DESCRIPTION This class is to help the student gain a deeper understanding of theory, as it applies to clinical application. Specific techniques will be learned to help the student intervene in difficult patterns and situations. STUDENT LEARNING OBJECTIVES 1. Students will gain an understanding of the most common marital issues and the most difficult marital issues. 2. Students will become aware of Clinical, Psychological, Scientific and Spiritual aspects and factors related to the counseling of marital issues. 3. Students will identify and formulate treatments using a variety of counseling modalities and theories for Marriage Counseling: Differences between Men and Women, Affairs, Communication, Intimacy, Conflict Resolution and Sexual Dysfunctions. KNOWLEDGE BASE Ohio Educational Requirement for Admission to the Examination for Professional Counselor Licensure This course meets the Ohio Administrative Code (OAC) requirement for 4757-13- 01(A)(5)(d), Methods of intervention and prevention of mental and emotional disorders. TEACHING STRATEGIES FOR STUDENT LEARNING This class includes a combination of lectures, class discussions, video presentation, role playing and handouts. Students may be asked to prepare presentations in group format.

Students will be assessed through the quality of their Professionalism and Positive Participation - Students are expected to participate in class discussions and small group presentations and to maintain professional conduct and attitude at all times. B. Class Attendance Attendance is required at all sessions. A missed class or its equivalent in time may result in a lowered grade for the course; missing more than one class could result in a failing grade. C. Students will meet in small groups to prepare a Case Presentation Paper on a vignette that will be provided by the professor along with a format for the Presentation. D. Exams Students will be required to complete a Final Exam on the last day of class that will follow a video presentation. The exam will include questions implementing the material covered in class lectures, class discussions and reading assignments relevant to the content of the video. E. (includes grades of A and A- ) B: Good work submitted, commendable achievement of course objectives, some aspects of the course met with excellence, substantial evidence of ability to utilize course material, positive contributions verbalized in class, consistency and thoroughness of work completed. (includes grades of B+, B, and B- )

C: Acceptable work completed, satisfactory achievement of course objectives, demonstrating at least some ability to utilize course knowledge, satisfactory class contribution. (includes grades of C+, C, and C- ) D: Passing but minimal work, marginal achievement of course objectives, poor performance in comprehension of work submitted, inadequate class contributions. (includes grades of D+, D, and D- ) F: Unacceptable work resulting in failure to receive class credit, inadequacy of work submitted or of performance and attendance in class.
