Xchanging HEALTH BENEFITS of WORK LEADERSHIP FORUM Dr David Beaumont, incoming President AFOEM Dr Robin Chase, past President AFOEM SYDNEY 7 May 2014

Why are we here? Australasian Faculty of Occupational and Environmental Medicine, Royal Australasian College of Physicians (AFOEM RACP) The role of the Occupational Physician: To positively influence the health of the working age population by enabling people to engage in work safely and to help those with health problems either to stay in work or return to work as early as appropriate How? By being in the unique position of understanding the health issues, the requirements of the employer, insurer or government. To be an expert advisor, facilitator and bridge between the many different stakeholders

Why did the Consensus Statement happen? Australian Consensus Statement on the Health Benefits of Work At the heart of this consensus statement regarding the health benefits of work is a shared desire to improve the welfare of individuals, families and communities Realising the health benefits of work for all Australians requires a paradigm shift in thinking and practice. It necessitates cooperation between many stakeholders, including government, employers, unions, insurance companies, legal practitioners, advocacy groups, and the medical, nursing and allied health professions.

The Launch Dame Carol launches both Consensus Statements Wellington, March 2011

The Launch El Presidente!

The Launch ACC Minister Hon Dr Nick Smith An aside: Good to see this important agenda being led by doctors with such a wide range of people involved and such a clear, commonsense message. It has a really good feel

The Launch Paul O Connor, Comcare For Comcare to become a signatory was the smart thing to do

The Launch Harry Pert, President RNZCGP

The Launch Harry Pert, President RNZCGP I prescribe medication everyday. I order investigations every day laboratory investigations, radiology investigations. My ability to do that safely is based on many years of preparation chemistry and pharmacology and a lot of decision-support throughout my career. I haven t had that training and support in my prescribing of work and absence from work; it is a big gap in our knowledge. I think we have to do some work in order to fix that.

The Launch Don Simmers, NZMA I prescribe medication everyday. I think we have to do some work, in order to fix that.

The Launch Don Simmers, NZMA We don t have the dark satanic mills of the industrial revolution anymore, but we do have situations where workers are not enjoying what they re doing, do not feel encouraged, do not feel as though they have any freedom, are time poor and feel discouraged in what they do. Work is good for health; but it can t be just any kind of work.

The Launch Helen Kelly, President NZCTU

The Launch Helen Kelly, President NZCTU Being a signatory to this was not without controversy for the CTU not because of anything in the statement but because of the context in which it is being signed. We have decided we should sign it because it is a good statement, it is in the interests of workers, it has been put together by good people with good motive and we are proud to be part of it.

The Afterparty/Aftermath Two AFOEM RACP Position Statements launched December 2013 What is Good Work? Improving Health and Workplace Productivity

Where to from here? What s happening in Australia? What s happening in New Zealand? What do we want to get out of today?
