You will access course material at the URL given above. Please read the Canvas Student Quickstart Guide and familiarize yourself with the different areas in Canvas before the course begins. Faculty Availability I will be checking in on the course at least once a day during the workweek (Monday Friday) and at least once over the weekend, unless otherwise notified. I will respond to questions and messages posted in Canvas within 24 hours during the week. Responses may be slower over the weekend, so please make every effort to send me questions before the weekend so that I can respond in a timely fashion. I will also schedule online office hours during which I would be happy to talk on the phone or online. You may contact me for urgent matters by cell phone at 717-432-9505. Expectations of Students Students should log in to Canvas at least once a day during the workweek. Each time you log in, you should check for activity in Announcements, Discussions, and in your Inbox. You can also set Canvas to notify you of course activity in numerous ways, including email, text messages, Facebook, and Twitter. Please set your preferences so that you receive and respond to correspondence in a timely manner. Canvas should be your primary method to communicate with the instructor and your fellow students. Unless your communication is of a personal nature, post in the Discussion area of Canvas rather than using email or direct messages. In this way, your peers can benefit from the interaction as well. Also, make sure you check the Announcements section of Canvas every time you log in. Hardware and Software Recommendations Student technology recommendations are found on the Information Technology Services website. These guidelines have been put in place to best equip you to have an optimal technological experience in our online programs. Technical Support for Students Technological support is available to all students during the days and times listed on the Information Technology Services homepage. Students also have access to technical support (i.e. tutorials, help functions, etc.) through the College s portal, MCSquare, and through the College s Learning Management System. Workload This course will require primarily asynchronous learning, which means that students can work independently at their own pace, as long as they meet the specified deadlines. Students should expect to
spend an average of 5.25 hours per week on activities that equate to in-class activities (indicated on Detailed Course Calendar below as IT instructional time ). These include viewing lectures and presentations, participating in class discussions, completing online quizzes, completing Excel and other lab exercises, and collaborating with peers. In addition, student should expect to spend up to an additional 10-15 hours per week on learning activities that equate to out-of-class work (indicated on the Detailed Course Calendar below as non-it non-instructional time ). This includes completing assigned readings, reviewing notes and preparing for quizzes, and completing homework. All Class Lectures, Power- Points, Videos, Assignments, and Quizzes will be available in Canvas. Use the Modules page to check the activities and assignments for each week. Also, be sure to read through the entire course schedule so you can plan ahead for assignments. Course Overview This course introduces students to the strategic, tactical, and operational aspects of information technology (IT) as it relates to business. We will survey a broad range of topics, challenging students to understand the relevance of IT to every aspect of business including, but not limited to quality, innovation, globalization, competitive advantage, collaboration, and outsourcing. The course also examines representative best practices of common IT business tools, including MS-Excel, Access, and PowerPoint, as well as social media and collaboration tools. Objectives Students who successfully complete this course will be able to: 1. Demonstrate an understanding of the strategic, tactical, and operational relevance of information technology to several aspects of business. 2. Observe how information technology can be used to diagnose and solve challenging business problems. 3. Develop the ability to use key computer applications such as MS-Excel, Access, and PowerPoint. 4. Course Components Strategic Units Each week will be dedicated to reading and discussing a chapter as assigned in the Turban textbook. Read the chapter carefully, and review the accompanying PowerPoint slides to capture the most pertinent points. The slides posted in Canvas have been edited to emphasize those areas deemed most applicable to this course, and may eliminate some of the sections in the text. Follow up activities to this reading will be the Discussions and Quizzes. Practical Exercises EXCEL Case Assignments: Using the EXCEL 2010 text, each student will be asked to complete Excel Tutorials 1 thru 6, Case Problem #3 at the end of each tutorial. The Case Problems are to be completed individually and students are not permitted to collaborate on these cases. Students should save their completed work in the appropriate Assignments folder in Canvas by the due date specified in the course schedule. Additional Practical Exercises: During the semester, students will be asked to complete four additional practical exercises to reinforce material covered in the units. Similar to the aforementioned individual case assignments, students should save their completed work in the appropriate Assignments folder in Canvas by the due date specified. All practical exercise assignments are due by 11:59 Sunday, with no credit given for late assignments. All Assignments will be graded promptly and posted within a week of the due date. Weekly Quizzes Quizzes will be posted every week in Canvas, measuring your mastery of the terminology and concepts presented that week through the Strategic units. You should read the required material carefully and take notes before attempting the quiz. You may refer to your notes and to the textbook during the quiz; however once you ve begun the quiz, you will have a limited time to complete it. Each quiz can only be taken once. Exams There will be two exams during the course: a midterm in week 4 and a final exam in week 8. Whereas the quizzes will be drawn primarily from the textbook readings, the exams will cover all course material covered to date, including the readings from the textbook, the discussions, and the Team Case Presentations. The midterm will cover all course material from the first four weeks. The final is comprehensive, though it will be more heavily weighted to the material from the last four weeks of the course. You may refer to your notes and other course resources during the exams; however once you ve begun the exam, you will have a limited time to complete it. Each exam can only be taken once. Team Case Presentations Students will be given the opportunity to further understand lecture material by examining business cases concerning for-profit/non-profit enterprises. Each team will present and lead class discussion for one business case. Teams are assigned as Groups in Canvas and it is your responsibility to participate with your team in the development of this presentation, which will be posted as a Canvas assignment by Wednesday of the week due. Peer Response Initial Post Discussions Discussion forums will serve a significant role in this class, similar to the face-to-face discussions in a traditional classroom. The following guidelines should help clarify expectations for your participation in discussions. At least one discussion question will be posted each week in Canvas related to some aspect of the weekly lecture material. After completing the required reading, you will be expected to post a substantive response to the prompt question, followed by responses to at least two other students posts. Initial Posts Initial posts are due on WEDNESDAY of each week. In your initial post(s), you should address the prompt questions with substantive, original responses. Your responses should refer to the class readings or include links to online resources as appropriate. Posts should be written in an academic and professional style, using proper spelling and grammar. Texting language is not appropriate. Peer Responses Peer responses are due along with all other assigned work on Sunday night each week. Respond to several of your peers posts, adding original comments or insights, making connections to other course material or your personal experiences, and asking discussion-oriented follow-up questions. Insufficient Partial On target 5 points Partially addresses some aspects of the prompt. Within 1 day of due date. 50-100 words. Original comments. Some errors in mechanics and form.
