BOARD OF TRUSTEES 2013-2014 Carl Kawaja Board Co-President Committee Member: Breakthrough, Development, Diversity, Education, Endowment, Head Evaluation, and Trustee Committees. Carl Kawaja is a portfolio manager at Capital World Investors and the president of the EuroPacific Growth and International Growth and Income funds. Carl has served on the SFDS Board of Trustees since 2008. Carl received a bachelor's degree from Brown University and his M.B.A. from Columbia Business School. He and his wife, Wendy, have three children in second, fifth, and sixth grade at SFDS. Laura Spivy Board Co-President Committee Member: Audit, Building & Grounds, Communications, Facilities Planning, Finance (former Chair), Head Evaluation, Investment, Strategic Plan, and Trustee Committees. Laura has a diverse business background with experience in corporate finance, private equity investing, and general business management and operations. She has served on the SFDS Board of Trustees since 2008. She is the former chair and still currently serves on the Board of Trustees of Gateway Public Schools. Laura received an Economics/East Asian Studies B.A. from Wesleyan University and her M.B.A. from Stanford University. Laura and her husband, Greg, have four children in first, third, sixth, and eighth grade at SFDS.
Katie Albright Committee Member: Development and Endowment (Co-Chair) Committees. Katie Albright is the Executive Director of the San Francisco Child Abuse Prevention Center, a local community-based organization. She has served on the SFDS Board of Trustees since 2009, and has also served on a number of other non-profit boards and government commissions. Katie received her J.D. from Georgetown University Law Center and her B.A. from Williams College. Katie and her husband, Jake, have two children in fifth and eighth grade at SFDS. Lesley Bunim '91 Treasurer Committee Member: Finance (Chair) and Investment (Co-Chair) Committees. Lesley Bunim is an equity analyst at RS Investments, a mutual fund company based in San Francisco. She has served on the SFDS Board of Trustees since 2007. Lesley graduated from San Francisco Day School in 1991, and is the first alumna to serve as a trustee. Lesley received her B.A. from Wellesley College and her M.B.A. from Stanford Graduate School of Business. Reed Colley Committee Member: Breakthrough, Diversity, and Finance Committees. Reed Colley is a Senior Vice President of Advent Software in San Francisco, where he focuses on corporate strategy and acquisitions. This is Reed s first year serving on the SFDS Board of Trustees. Reed and his wife, Katie, are founders and trustees of Do Something Great Today Foundation, which focuses on creating technology to enable donors to give of their time and resources more effectively to the charities of their choice. Reed graduated from Vanderbilt University in 1998 with degrees in Economics and Engineering Science. Reed and Katie have four children, two of whom are in first and third grade at SFDS. Tommy Davis '96 Committee Member: Finance and Investment Committees. Tommy Davis is a Vice President at General Atlantic, a global growth investment firm, where he focuses on investments in the financial services sector. Tommy has served on the SFDS Board of Trustees since 2012. He received his M.B.A. from Stanford University in 2013, and while at Stanford he worked for the San Francisco 49ers on a range of strategic projects including the successful bid by the
Bay Area and the 49ers to host the 50th Super Bowl in 2016. He graduated from Bowdoin College with a B.A. in 2005, majoring in Government and Legal Studies and minoring in Spanish. Tommy is a graduate of San Francisco Day School (1996), and has two sisters who also attended the School: Louise (1995) and Jeannie (2012). Sandy Dean Vice-President, Board of Trustees Committee Member: Audit, Finance, and Trustee Committees. Sandy Dean is with Sansome Partners LLC, which makes a variety of public and private investments. He also serves as chairman of Mendocino and Humboldt Redwood Company. Sandy has served on the SFDS Board of Trustees since 2008, and has also served on a number of other non-profit boards. He holds a B.S.E. from Duke University and an M.B.A. from the Graduate School of Business at Stanford University. Sandy and his wife, Cathy, have children in fifth, sixth, and eighth grade at SFDS. Humberto Bert Galleno Secretary, Board of Trustees Committee Member: Communications (Chair), and Head Evaluation (Chair) Committees. Bert is the founder of Gravity Capital Group, a corporate development and strategic planning services firm working with early stage and mature companies. He has served on the SFDS Board of Trustees since 2012, is currently a trustee of the Reading Partners Bay Area Regional Board, and previously served as the President of the Board of the Bay Area Discovery Museum. At San Francisco Day School, Bert chaired the Parent Group on Diversity and served as an officer of the Parents Association. He holds a B.A. from Columbia University. Bert and his wife, Lareina Yee, have two sons in first and fifth grade at SFDS. Fif Ghobadian Committee Member: Building & Grounds (Chair), Diversity, and Facilities Planning (Chair) Committees. Fif Ghobadian is currently a Senior Loan Officer with Guarantee Mortgage in San Francisco. She has served on the SFDS Board of Trustees since 2010, and was a board member at Pacific Primary for four years and the president of the board for two of those years. Fif has also been on the board of GirlSource, a San Francisco non-profit organization that provides leadership and developmental opportunities
to low-income teenage girls, and The Impala Racing Team, a competitive women s running team. Fif holds a B.A. from Claremont McKenna College with a double major in economics, accounting and math. Fif has two children in fifth and eighth grade at SFDS. Dawn Hartman President, SFDS Parents Association Committee Member: Communications and Diversity Committees. Dawn has been an active member of the SFDS community since her daughter started kindergarten in 2010, co-chairing the Admission Committee from 2011-2012 and serving as Vice President in 2012. Dawn has participated in several SFDS Parent Groups (Diversity and Education), while also serving as a leader of the Adoptive Families Group. She holds a B.A. in history from UCLA (magna cum laude) and continued her studies in the Stanford University graduate program, focusing on United States history. Dawn and her husband, Scott, have a daughter in third grade at SFDS. John Hayashi Committee Member: Audit and Breakthrough Committees. John Hayashi is a tax attorney at Thompson Tax & Associates, LLC, a firm he cofounded 12 years ago. John has served on the SFDS Board of Trustees since 2012, and is a former Volunteer Chair of the Parents Association and an officer of the PA Executive Committee. He has also served as Co-Chair on the Parent Volunteer Committee for Admission, participated in developing the SFDS Strategic Plan, and served on the Head of Upper School Search Committee in 2011. John earned a degree in business management and managerial science from M.I.T. and his J.D. from the Georgetown University Law Center. A third generation Japanese- American, John and his wife, Elisa, have a daughter in sixth grade at SFDS. Malcolm John Committee Member: Diversity (Co-Chair) and Strategic Plan Committees. Malcolm John, MD, MPH, is an assistant clinical professor at UCSF and director of 360: The Positive Care Center at UCSF, the HIV general practice at the Parnassus campus. He also serves as Director of the Men of Color Program at 360, a consultant to the HIV Management Program of the Brown & Toland Medical Group, and chair of their HIV Advisory Board. He has served on the SFDS Board of Trustees since 2008. Malcolm received his B.S. from Yale College, his M.D.
from Harvard University, and his M.P.H. from the University of California Berkeley. At SFDS, Malcolm has participated in the Service Learning Committee and was a Co-Chair of the Parent Group on Diversity. Malcolm and his wife, Gina Moreno-John, have a daughter in eighth grade at SFDS. Janet McKinley Alumni Parent Committee Member: Communications, Development, and Education Committees. Janet McKinley began her professional career in retail buying and currently owns Janet McKinley Interiors. Janet is currently on the Board of the SF Film Society and serves on the Education and Exhibits Committee of the California Academy of Sciences. She has also served on the boards of Saint Luke s Hospital Foundation, San Francisco Day School (1989-2001), San Francisco University High School, and the California Academy of Sciences. During her previous terms at SFDS, she chaired the board s education and trustee committees and was involved in three capital campaigns. Janet received her bachelor s degree from Cornell University and a professional certificate from New York School of Interior Design. Janet and her husband, Tom, are parents of Sara (1995), Thomas (1998), and Kathryn (2001). Ken McNeely Committee Member: Development (Co-Chair), Endowment (Co-Chair), and Trustee Committees. Ken McNeely is President of AT&T California, the largest domestic market for AT&T Inc. As such, he leads AT&T s workforce in the state of more than 35,000 employees. Ken has served on the SFDS Board of Trustees since 2012, and has also served as a room parent, admissions volunteer, and member of the Parent Group on Diversity and Annual Fund volunteer. Ken is currently a trustee at The Little School and Bay Area Council, where he chairs the education committee. He earned his B.A. from the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill and his J.D. from Howard University School of Law. Ken and his partner, Inder Singh, have two children attending first and third grade at SFDS. Gabrey Means Committee Member: Communications, Facilities Planning, and Finance Committees. Gabrey Means is Co-Founder and Creative Director of Grow Marketing, an engagement marketing, social media and public relations shop founded in San
Francisco in 2001. Grow has crafted award-winning campaigns for a range of clients from Google and LVMH to Pepsi and GE. Gabrey is married to fellow entrepreneur and Creative Director, Tommy Means. This is Gabrey s first year serving on the SFDS Board of Trustees. Gabrey holds a B.A. in Journalism from Washington & Lee University. Gabrey and Tommy have two children in second and fourth grade at SFDS. Alicia Nogales Vice-President, Board of Trustees Committee Member: Strategic Plan and Trustee (Chair) Committees. Alicia Nogales has a diverse background in film, television, and arts education. Alicia is a Co-Advisory chair of First Exposures, a project of the Tides Foundation. First Exposures is a nationally recognized one-to-one mentoring program, which provides free weekly photography classes to underserved youth. Alicia has served on the SFDS Board of Trustees since 2009. She holds a B.A. from the University of California, Santa Barbara. Alicia and her husband, Greg Little, have three sons in sixth, seventh, and eighth grade at SFDS. Jenny Pearlman Committee Member: Breakthrough (Chair) and Trustee Committees. Jenny Pearlman is the Community Education & Communications Manager of the San Francisco Child Abuse Prevention Center. Jenny serves as a board member of Community Initiatives, an advisory board member of San Francisco Breakthrough, and on the Grants Committee for Hedge Funds Care. At SFDS, Jenny joined the Board of Trustees in 2010 and has been a room parent, art volunteer, and member of the Diversity Committee. Jenny received her bachelor s degree from Georgetown University and law degree from Georgetown University Law Center. Jenny and her husband, Jack McDonald, have four children in seventh grade, fifth grade, third grade, and Kindergarten at SFDS. Ann Roberts Committee Member: Development (Co-Chair), Education, and Finance Committees. Ann Roberts has a diverse background in strategy and finance and is an active community leader. Most recently, Ann has worked in venture capital, spending her last four years helping to run a portfolio company in the education space. Ann is also on the board of the California Tennis Club. Ann began serving on the SFDS
Board of Trustees in 2010 and has also held many other roles: Chair for CultureFest: Italia, annual fund class captain, room parent, art volunteer, and member of the strategic planning task force. Ann has a B.A. from Bethany College and an M.B.A. from Harvard Business School. Ann and her husband, Brian, have three children in third, fifth, and seventh grade at SFDS. Topher Solmssen Committee Member: Development and Investment (Co-Chair) Committees. Topher Solmssen is a Managing Director and Founding Partner of Evercore Institutional Equities at Evercore Partners in San Francisco, where his focus is Media, Telecom and Technology. Topher joined Evercore in 2010 from Credit Suisse, where he was Sector Head for the US Equities Media and Telecom group. Topher is also on the Board of Food Runners, an SF-based organization whose network of volunteers picks up excess food and delivers it to those in need, and Outward Bound California, which seeks to change lives though challenge and discovery. Topher has served on the SFDS Board of Trustees since 2012. Topher graduated with a B.A. from Hamilton College. He and his wife, Courtney Cooney, have three children in second, third, and sixth grade at SFDS. Christy Tripp Committee Member: Communications, Strategic Plan (Chair) and Trustee Committees. Christy Walther Tripp is the executive director of The Walther Foundation, a family foundation based in San Francisco. Previously, she worked as a consultant at the Boston Consulting Group and as a manager at Score Learning Corporation. At SFDS, Christy has served on the Board of Trustees since 2009 and has also participated in a variety of roles including President of the Parents Association and Chair of the School s Strategic Plan. She is a graduate of SF University High School, Harvard University, and has a master s degree from the University of Chicago. She has two sons: an SFDS alumnus (2012) and a current sixth grader. Grace Won Committee Member: Development, Diversity (Co-Chair), and Trustee Committees. Chair, Search Committee. Grace has been a business litigation partner with Farella, Braun + Martel LLP
since 2002 and has served as the firm's hiring partner and pro bono chair. Grace serves on the Board of Directors for Children Now, a non-partisan children's advocacy group, and was formerly a member of its Executive Committee. She has served on the SFDS Board of Trustees since 2011 and previously served as President of the Cow Hollow School Board. At SFDS, Grace has served as a room parent and currently chairs the Search Committee for a new head of school. Grace holds a B.A. cum laude in American History from Harvard University and an M.A. from University College London. She received her J.D. from Georgetown University Law Center. Grace and her husband, Richard Holden, have children in second and fourth grade at SFDS. Molly Wood Committee Member: Diversity and Education (Chair) Committees. Molly is an educator with deep experience in San Francisco and nationally. She began her teaching career at Benjamin Franklin Middle School in San Francisco, was a founding teacher at the Academy of the Pacific Rim in Boston, and went on to found KIPP Bayview Academy, a college preparatory charter school in San Francisco s Bayview-Hunters Point community. She served as principal at KIPP Bayview for six years, and continues to be involved in the school and KIPP Bay Area Schools. She has also worked with Partners in School Innovation and Teach for America, Uncommon Schools/Teach Like a Champion, and is currently a consultant to education and nonprofit organizations. She has served on the SFDS Board of Trustees since 2011. Molly has a B.A., an M.A. in education, and an M.B.A. from Stanford University. She and her partner, Dagny, have a son in preschool and boy-girl twins.
