Requirements ( Microsoft ) Minimum Processor : 300Mhz Memory : 256MB Disk : 5GB Recommended Processor : 500Mhz Memory : 512MB Disk : 10 GB 19

Windows Small Business Server 2003 - System Requirements Standard and Premium Editions: 550 MHz or faster processor clock speed recommended; 300 MHz minimum Intel Pentium/Celeron family, or AMD K6/Athlon/Duron family, or compatible processor CD-ROM or DVD-ROM drive Super VGA (800 x 600) or higher-resolution monitor recommended; VGA or hardware that supports console redirection required Keyboard and Microsoft Mouse or compatible pointing device, or hardware that supports console redirection Ethernet network interface card from the Windows Server 2003 Hardware Compatibility List Standard Edition 384 MB of RAM or higher recommended (256 MB minimum: 4 GB maximum) 4 GB of available hard-disk space* Premium Edition 512 MB of RAM or higher recommended (256 MB minimum; 4 GB maximum) 5 GB of available hard-disk space* (2 GB required if upgrading from SBS 2000) 20 * Actual requirements will vary based on system configuration and the applications and features selected for install.

Recommendations SBS2003 Minimum 2GB RAM ( 4GB better ). Dual processor. RAID disk. 80 GB Hard disk space. 2 x network cards. External tape drive. Dual power supply. Uninterruptible Power Supply. 21

Limitations 75 license limit. 4GB Server RAM. (SBS2003 only) All server software on single server. SBS Server must be root of active directory ( i.e. first server in domain ). 1 Exchange email organization. 16GB total private email storage. ( With Exchange SP2 now up to 75GB, SBS2003 only ) 22

Windows Small Business Server 2003 Licensing Server/CAL Model: Cost-effective Scalable Flexible New Options: User or Device CALs External Connectors User CAL Allows a named user to access the server from multiple devices Example: A sales person who accesses their email through a laptop, phone, and web browser. Only 1 user CAL is used Device CAL Allows multiple users to access the server from a single device Example: A call-center terminal is used by 3 different people throughout a day. Only 1 device CAL is used 23

Automated, network-wide patch and update management for all Microsoft Update supported products, lowering the costs of managing a Microsoft-based network and helping to maintain a more secure infrastructure. Increased mailbox limits from 16 GB to 75 GB, enabling improved productivity for employees. Inclusion of SQL Server 2005 Workgroup Edition technology in SBS 2003 R2 Premium Edition. Expanded client access license (CAL) rights, including access to additional Exchange Server 2003 and SQL Server 2005 Workgroup Edition servers in the SBS 2003 R2 network, allowing customers more flexibility in growth. 24

Misconceptions dispelled Can have multiple servers in SBS domain. Can have multiple domains and SBS on same cabling. Applications like Exchange, SQL, ISA, etc are the same as enterprise editions just limited to operate on the SB server. Things work better using wizards. 25

SBS 2008 15-Nov-2008 26

Server Essential 2008 15-Nov-2008 27

SBS 2008 differences 64 bit hardware No support for tape drive backups Easier to set up and migrate Premium supports 2 server environment Only support for 1 network card configuration No inbuilt firewall 28

SBS 2008 differences Based on Windows Server 2008 Includes Exchange 2007 Does not include Outlook client Includes SharePoint v3 SBS more expensive, Cals cheaper Can add 1 Cal at a time (SBS 2003 = min 5 cals) Add memory > 4GB ( 8-10 GB recommended. 29

Planning Hardware. Disk space / partitioning. Internet connection. Migration. Licensing. IP addressing. Management. 30

Hardware Name brand bundles offer best value. Warranty, ensure 3 5 years. Use disk redundancy = RAID. Aim for 3-5 year time frame. Memory is cheap, so use as much as you can. Install an Uninterruptible Power Supply (UPS). Consider redundant power supplies in server. Ensure that all firmware is up to date prior to install. Recommend CAT6 cabling to support gigabit Ethernet. Recommend external tape drive for off site backups. 31

Bundle Deals 37

Disk partitioning SBS 2003 Spilt disk into 3 partitions C:, D:, E: C: = 1/6 th total disk Windows (up to 25GB) D: = 2/6 th total disk Programs (up to 30GB) E: = 3/6 th total disk Data F: = CD-ROM Recommend that backup device can store 38 all data on one media ( ie tape ).

Disk partitioning SBS 2008 Minimum C: during setup = 65 GB All software is installed to C: by default Data can be relocated later via wizards Recommended that at least 1 additional drive be created for data storage. 39

Internet connection Can use dial up but don t! Broadband with static ( set ) IP address. Use server to host emails but not web sites. Static IP address allows easier remote access and management. Broadband packages are cheap, so get one with a big download limit. 40

Migration SBS 2003 Clean installs to new hardware always best. Can only upgrade from SBS 2000 or Windows 2000 ( or better ) installations. Can upgrade from SBS 2003 Standard to Premium if needed. Can upgrade from SBS 2003 Demo to Retail if needed. Can upgrade SBS 2003 to Enterprise editions of Windows Server, Exchange, etc via a transition pack. 41

IP addressing Default = 192.168.16.X Can make anything you like. Choose reserved addressing ( usually 10.X.X.X ) 42

Management Networks require continued maintenance to perform optimally. Software needs regular updating and patching. User requirements constantly change. Security is always a challenge. Consider who is going to do this? Do you want to do it? SBS is Microsoft s MOST COMPLEX product. 43

New Certification Microsoft Small Business Specialists are specially trained to understand small business needs. They can help you choose and implement the right business solution more quickly and easily, saving time and money. 44
