A CENTURY OF FORMING MEN FOR GREATNESS 2014 E HU R O N S 1914 E N D RED Y A CATHEDRAL PREPARATORY SCHOOL & SEMINARY Page 1

F or 100 years, Cathedral has stayed faithful to its mission: to form the mind in the ways of academic excellence and the heart and soul in the ways of heroic virtue and belief. Bishop Nicholas DiMarzio Page 2

CATHEDRAL PREP MEN FOR GREATNESS As faithful Catholics, you want the best education for your son in a thoroughly faithfilled environment. You want your son to grow closer to the Church in his teen years, not drift away from it. You want him to discover his true vocation in life, whatever it may be. Most of all, you want your son to be happy to be well-educated, well-rounded, and well-loved. At Cathedral those are our goals too. The word seminary in our name means seedbed. Three parish priests serve full-time at Cathedral Some seeds at Cathedral do in fact mature into priests, thanks be Prep: Rector Very Rev. Joseph Fonti (center), Rev. to God. I myself graduated in the James Rodriguez (L), and Rev. James Kuroly (R). class of 1984 and was ordained in 1992. Most of our graduates go on to great careers in the world, carrying a strong faith with them. If you want your son to mature into a truly great man whether or not he s called to priesthood plant the seeds of greatness at Cathedral Prep. Yours in Christ, Very Rev. Joseph Fonti, Rector-President A Century of Tradition Cathedral Preparatory School & Seminary began its illustrious history in 1914 at the corners of Atlantic and Washington Avenues in Brooklyn. In 1963 a Queens branch was established in Elmhurst. In 1985, the two sites merged at the Elmhurst location, across from the Queens Center Mall. For its entire history, our students have entrusted themselves to the care and patronage of Mary, the Immaculate Conception. Page 3

STRONG CATHOLIC IDENTITY FRIENDSHIP WITH CHRIST Our priority is forming men to know and love Jesus. Daily Mass and weekly Eucharistic Benediction are at the core of the school s schedule. Three full-time parish priests journey with the boys every day as spiritual mentors, academic instructors, and genuine father figures. CHRISTIAN LEADERS & CLERGY P arents sometimes wonder about the seminary component of Cathedral Prep. The reality is that we teach boys about all vocations, including marriage. For those who wish to explore the priesthood, there is a special track for deeper discernment. In our 100-year history, a number of graduates have gone on to become priests, bishops, and even cardinals. Most graduates have successful occupations in their chosen field and all are formed to be Christian leaders. I love that Cathedral has daily Mass, Eucharistic adoration, confession, and spiritual direction. They are receiving all these graces every week! My son told me that he doesn t know if he ll be a priest but he s open if God calls him. Ivania Castillo, Cathedral Prep mother Page 4

Alumni who come back to visit the school tell me that what they miss most is daily Mass. Graduates say they loved the prayerfulness and silence before the Lord. Mr. Richie Diaz, Principal Page 5

PERSONAL EDUCATION SMALL BY DESIGN athedral is a small high school offering a highly personalized, one- C on-one education. A selective admissions process means we accept about 40 to 50 new students per year. Class sizes are the smallest of any Catholic high school in the diocese, creating an intimate learning atmosphere in which teachers adapt to the various learning styles of students. An advanced online portal helps parents and teachers stay in constant communication about students assignments and progress. AN AWARD-WINNING SCHOOL FOR BOYS We re honored once again to have been selected as one of the top 50 Catholic high schools in the nation by the Cardinal Newman Society. The recognition is based on Catholic identity, academics, civic education, and overall excellence. We chose Cathedral because of its small size and its strong emphasis on the Catholic faith. It s a great environment; my sons knew their teachers and the teachers knew my sons. They graduated with a great foundation in the Faith and went on to do very well in college. Thomas Mahoney, father of three graduates Page 6

For me and my five brothers, Cathedral was a unique place. You could always be yourself; you never felt guarded. It was like being with family, and it s still like that today. I wouldn t have wanted to spend my formative years anywhere else. Paul Friel, Class of 1985 Page 7

ACADEMIC RIGOR KNOWLEDGE FOR LIFE At Cathedral, exceptional students are challenged to meet their full potential. We re intolerant of mediocrity and expect greatness from every student. We pride ourselves on bringing C students up to A students, through mentoring and challenging them to stretch their abilities. Every student has monthly meetings with his academic advisor and meets frequently with teachers to discuss specific classes. One of our proudest moments each year is the Academic Renewal Award for students who have improved to the point of greatness! ADVANCED STUDY Course offerings include a full battery of Advanced Placement classes including Global Studies, U.S. History, and English. Through a partnership with St. John University s College Advantage Program, Cathedral Prep students have the opportunity to graduate with over 21 college credits, transferable to many liberal arts and science schools. SCHOLARSHIPS & AID One-third of students receive scholarships and tuition assistance, awarded on a variety of criteria. The Diocese of Brooklyn, our alumni, and the Knights of Columbus are instrumental in providing aid. We can also arrange aid for students commuting from the Archdiocese of New York and the Diocese of Rockville Centre. Page 8

SPORTS & CLUBS STRONG IN MIND & BODY Boys need physical activity and healthy competition and Cathedral delivers! Attending a small school means that boys who want to play sports actually play, either intramural or on school teams. We also have a dozen clubs that develop cultural and social interests. CRUSADER SPORTS Baseball JV Basketball Varsity Basketball Bowling Cross Country Soccer CRUSADER CLUBS Forensics Literary Club Air & Space Association Chess Music Club Respect Life Gaming Club And more Page 9

FRIENDSHIPS FOR LIFE UNRIVALED FRATERNITY ne of Cathedral Prep s greatest strengths is a spirit of O fraternity and acceptance among the boys. It s a place where all personalities are welcomed, and every boy has friends, even across grade levels. Visitors are always impressed with the camaraderie among students. (Of course, there is a level of healthy competition; just visit us during Spirit Week!) FRATERNITY SYSTEM Every student belongs to one of 11 fraternities, with distinctive names like Defenders of Faith and Guardians of Virtue. Led by faculty mentors, these fraternities provide the foundation for student support, competition, and brotherhood. Our newest fraternity is for boys who want to explore the priesthood more deeply, led personally by the rector. PRESERVING TRADITION INTO THE FUTURE Alumni have a strong presence at Cathedral: the entire administration and about one-third of the faculty are graduates, which ensures a continuity of spirit over the years. We have a century of tradition that is being passed on from teacher to student! I love Cathedral s emphasis on forming great men not the weak dads you see on television. The faculty members go beyond academics to teach the boys how to grow into adults, how to be real men. Throughout the education, there s an authentic emphasis on faith the religion classes are real theology classes, not watered down at all. Dina Siano, mother of an alumnus and a current student Page 10

The academic standards at Cathedral are as high as any high school I ve seen. I was thoroughly prepared to launch into advanced studies and earn my doctorate. Today, I m passing along that knowledge to a new generation of students. Dr. Philip Franco, Class of 1993 SUCCESSFUL ALUMNI GRADUATES WHO EXCEL Cathedral has a 100% graduation rate, with students going on to enroll at West Point, Harvard, NYU, Columbia, the CUNY System, and dozens of other topnotch universities. Ever academic year, our graduates consistently earn at least $1.5 million dollars in scholarship money. Where are our grads today? Alumni include business owners, tech CEOs, litigators, FBI Agents, parish priests, bishops, city councilmen, school principals and a long list of other successful careers. Our tight-knit alumni community organizes many different events, fundraisers, and reunions. No matter your age, you re always a Crusader! Page 11
