University of Denver Franklin L. Burns School of Real Estate and Construction Professional Energy Land Management Certificate Programs The Energy Land Management (ELM) Certificate program, (formerly known as the Petroleum Land Management Certificate Program or PLM), was developed by the Burns School of Real Estate and Construction Management at the University of Denver. The program was designed for landmen, lease and title analysts, attorneys, land owners and others in the industry, or those who are interested in entering the industry, and who are looking for formal, professional training in energy land management education. The classes are taught on campus and on-line in an intensive one or two day format without mandatory college entry requirements, testing or cost of a traditional higher-education academic program. The on-line classes are offered in real time so our distance students actually join in with our on-campus class. Expanding on the initial certificate program, and responding to the evolving needs of a growing industry, we now offer five (5) separate and focused certificate programs: The Energy Land Management Certificate Program (11 classes/ 16 days / 84 hours) - ELM Advanced Energy Land Management Certificate Program ( 10 classes / 10 days / 60 hours) - AELM Energy Finance and Management Certificate Program (6 courses / 6 days / 36 hours) - EF&M Mineral, Royalty and Surface Owners Certificate Program (4 classes / 4 days / 24 hours) - MRSO Leases, Titles and Contracts Certificate Program (5 classes / 5 days / 30 hours) - LTC Please check our website for the entry requirements for each certificate as they will vary. Most classes can be taken according to individual personal schedules and are not required to be taken in any order. The exception to this is if one is totally new to the industry or has worked in the industry less than two years, the first class taken for the Energy Land Management Certificate Program must be the 2-day Energy Land Management course. Since this is an industry-focused and non-academic program, there are no tests or grades; but be prepared to learn an incredible amount of information! Classes are lecture style with case studies examined and discussed during the class. AAPL continuing education credits will be given for all classes completed and Affidavits of Attendance will be emailed within 30 days of completion of each class. You have two years from the month you start to complete a certificate program. ON-LINE STUDENTS PLEASE NOTE: The link to on-line classrooms will be sent 48 hours before each class. Distance students will receive instructions with the link. SPEAKERS OR HEADPHONES & A MICROPHONE ARE REQUIRED FOR ON-LINE STUDENTS. Many stores carry microphones for less than $10. On-line classes were set up for distance students; local students should plan to attend class on-campus barring an emergency situation. If you register online or on-campus, you may not change once your registration is confirmed. Cost and Registration Contact Evin.Boyle@du.edu or 303.871.6672 for registration questions and/or course changes. Contact Debra via email at dortlip@du.edu or call 303.871.3997 for program information and questions. The Energy Land Management Certificate and Energy Finance & Management Certificate classes are $325 per day ($650 for 2-day classes.). The Advanced Energy Land Management Certificate, Mineral, Royalty and Surface Owners Certificate and Leases, Titles & Contracts Certificate classes are $375 per day. All fees include the workbooks needed for each class as well assigned parking on the DU campus for each class. Check with your employer as many companies have paid for their employees to complete these certificate programs. There are no refunds once you have registered for a class but you may transfer the registration to another class with a 48-hour advance notice. On-line students will receive printable copies of all class materials via email prior to each class.

It is required that all courses must be paid for in advance of class time. If a company check needs to be issued, please make the request with enough advance time to be able to submit the check before class begins. Current course descriptions and class registration will be available on-line at: https://www.daniels.du.edu/burns. A notice will be emailed as soon as registration goes live. All registrations will be confirmed and classroom / parking information will be sent 48-hours prior to each class. NOTE: PLEASE REGISTER NO LATER THAN 72 HOURS BEFORE EACH CLASS FOR PRINTING AND PLANNING PURPOSES. REGISTRATION WILL NOT BE LIVE AFTER THAT AND CLASS MATERIALS CANNOT BE GUARANTEED FOR LAST MINUTE DROP-IN STUDENTS. CLASS TIMES WEEKDAYS AND SATURDAY 8:30AM TO 4:30PM, (ONE-HOUR LUNCH BREAK) SUNDAY 8:00AM TO 3:30PM (30-MINUTE LUNCH BREAK) COURSE DATES ARE GROUPED UNDER EACH CERTIFICATE PROGRAM BELOW: Remaining classes from the Winter/Spring 2013 schedule: MINERAL, ROYALTY & SURFACE OWNERS CERTIFICATE PROGRAM WINTER / SPRING 2013 CLASS SCHEDULE 1-JUN SAT OVERVIEW OF THE ENERGY INDUSTRY / OIL & GAS LAW FOR ROYALTY OWNERS $375 2-JUN SUN LEASING & SURFACE USE AGREEMENTS $375 8-JUN SAT UNDERSTANDING ROYALTY CALCULATIONS AND DIVISION AND TRANSFER ORDERS $375 9-JUN SUN TAXATION & ESTATE PLANNING / ROLE OF MINERAL INTERESTS IN FINANCIAL PLANNING $375 LEASES, TITLES & CONTRACTS CERTIFICATE PROGRAM WINTER / SPRING 2013 CLASS SCHEDULE 10-JUN MON THE OIL AND GAS LEASE: STANDARD SAVINGS, TERMINATION AND ADMINISTRATIVE CLAUSES $375 11-JUN TUE MODIFICATIONS TO THE OIL & GAS LEASE IMPACTING KEEPING THE LEASE ALIVE AND ASSIGNMENTS OF INTEREST $375 12-JUN WED TITLE ISSUES AND DIVISION ORDER TITLE OPINIONS, CALCULATIONS AND DIVISION ORDERS $375 13-JUN THU JOINT OPERATING AGREEMENTS AND THEIR SUCCESSFUL USE AFTER THE PRODUCING TEST WELL $375 15-JUN SAT JOINT OPERATING AGREEMENTS, GAS BALANCING AGREEMENTS AND OTHER CONTRACTS $375 Continue to Summer/Autumn 2013 Schedules

FAQ Section For additional information or questions, contact the Burns School at 303-871-3997 or email Debra Ortlip at dortlip@du.edu Q: I have already started the PLM Certificate program and now some requirements for completion have changed. Will the courses I have already taken count toward the new Energy Land Management Certificate? A: Yes. If you started the program before September 1, 2012 you are grandfathered in under the old requirements. (If you need a copy of that version please contact Debra at dortlip@du.edu) Although some slight changes have been made to the requirements, we will work with you to be sure that all classes you have taken will still count. Q: I have worked in the oil and gas industry for a long time. Can I get any classes waived? A: Contact Dr. Patrick Fitzgerald at angus_prof@yahoo.com. Relate your experience and list the class you want waived. You will then need to choose an alternative and equal-length class to fulfill the total classes needed to complete the certificate requirements. Q: I have already taken several classes and have decided that I want to earn a certificate. Will these classes I have taken count toward a certificate? A: Yes. If you have taken the previous classes through the Burns School PLM program, they will transfer over and count toward the updated ELM certificate program. Q: Do I need to take a GMAT test and be accepted by the University of Denver in order to enroll in the ELM Certificate Programs? A: No. This is an industry program, not an academic program. You do not have to go through the academic acceptance process nor pay the same tuition as DU academic students. There are no tests or papers due for the classes, but you will learn an amazing amount of essential information about the industry. Q: When I am done with all my classes, how do I get my certificate? A: You will fill in the Certificate of Completion for the program. Be sure you keep track of the dates for all your classes. There is a copy of the form at the end of this packet. You need to fully complete one copy with the dates your classes were taken, sign the form and submit it via fax to 303.871.2971 or via email to dortlip@du.edu. Once confirmed, you will be sent a framed certificate for display. Q: Do you have an academic energy program through the University of Denver? A: Not at this time. But the Burns School is working on the development of this program at the graduate level. When completed, enrolled students at the University of Denver will be able to take a concentration in Energy Land Management. Q: I just heard about a class being offered via a colleague & registration is already closed. Can I still take the class?

A: We must close registrations 72 hours before each class so class materials can be printed, but you can still contact Debra at the Burns School at 303-871-3997. If extra class material is available, you may be able to take the class but this is not guaranteed. Please do not just show up to a class without pre-registering or first contacting the school. Q: I am having trouble signing in for an on-line class. What should I do? A: A land-line internet connection is strongly recommended for on-line classes. Be sure your internet connection has not been interrupted, open the control panel, select Internet Options, delete temporary internet files and then restart your computer. When that is done go back to the email containing the link to the class and click on the link once or copy/paste the link directly in the browser. If that does not solve the issue contact Debra at 303-871-3997 or at 303.358.2591 on the weekends. Q: I am having trouble hearing Dr. Fitzgerald in the on-line classroom. What should I do? A: Make sure you run the Audio Wizard found under Meeting at the top right of the screen. This will help you troubleshoot the issue. You may also enter a note to Dr. Fitzgerald in the Chat section of the classroom screen. Q: I was in the online classroom and somehow lost the connection. What should I do? A: Be sure your internet connection has not been interrupted open the control panel, select Internet Options, delete temporary internet files and then restart your computer. When that is done go back to the email containing the link to the class and click on the link once or copy/paste the link directly in the browser. A land-line connection averts many of these issues. EVALUATION SHEETS WILL BE SENT TO YOU AFTER EACH CLASS. PLEASE TAKE A MOMENT TO FILL OUT AND HELP US KEEP THE PROGRAM AT A COMPETITIVE LEVEL. THANK YOU. We hope you enjoy your professional learning experience with the Burns School / University of Denver! PLEASE NOTE: It is important for you to track the dates of your completed classes. To help you do this, please use the Certification of Completion on the next page. We do not and cannot track everyone s classes for the certificates. We can only confirm classes taken when the form is submitted.
