May/June 2015 Welcome to the CETL s Insider newsletter that contains tech tips, teaching resources, and a schedule of events. The mission of the CETL is to promote excellence in teaching to assist in the pedagogical and professional development of Saint Francis University faculty, and to encourage the integration of appropriate technology to enhance teaching and learning. In This Issue Summer Activities to Keep Your Teaching Fresh Page 1 The CETL Bookshelf Page 2 Podcast with Ken Bain Page 2 Blackboard: Copying Items, Controlling Course Availability, & Setting the Course Entry Point Page 3 Poll Everywhere New Features Page 4 Workshop Schedule Page 5 Summer Activities to Keep Your Teaching Fresh Summer is a great time to relax and refresh your teaching with new activities from the CETL. Signing up for an event is a great way to motivate yourself, to be engaged, and to help you achieve your goals. You don t even have to be on campus; we have activities that you can participate in online. Here are a few for your consideration. Read a Book The CETL is organizing a summer reading group around the book How Learning Works: 7 Research-Based Principles for Smart Teaching. This book is organized into seven chapters that will make it easy to follow a seven week discussion format. Discussions will begin near the end of June and will take place on the Blackboard User Group discussion board. The first 12 people to register will get a free copy of the book! Register by ing twilson@francis.edu or btaylor@francis.edu. Talk About Teaching Our lunchtime discussion series called Let s Talk About Teaching will have both online and face-to-face sessions for summer. Once a month the CETL will host a discussion about a teaching topic. The online sessions will meet live using Blackboard Collaborate. The face-to-face sessions will meet over lunch on campus. See the workshop calendar for dates and discussion topics. Continue Learning Plan a lesson that incorporates a new teaching technique or activity to keep students engaged in class. Enhance your Blackboard skills by attending a Blackboard Boot Camp or workshop. Learn a new technology tool that helps you meet a specific need in the office or classroom. After you learn something new or attend a workshop, make an action plan to use the new tool or skill within 24 hours. CETL Insider info.francis.edu/cetl 1
TEACHING AND LEARNING More Activities to Keep Your Teaching Fresh from the CETL Bookshelf By: Theresa Wilson For those who have snippets of time to invest, consider these DVDs from Magna Publication. Each DVD features a 20 minute video, PowerPoint Slides, Supplemental Material, and Transcript of some of the company s most popular online seminars. Magna Online Seminars on DVD 20 minute videos Considering the Courage and Practice of Teaching How Can I Enhance the Impact of Feedback in Online Classes? How Do I Create a Climate for Learning in My Classroom? How Do I Create Engaging Threaded Discussion Questions? How Do I Get More Students to Participate in Class? Is There a Solution to Students Multitasking in Class? Prepared Students: The Secret s in the Assignment Strategy What Are My Multiple Choice Test Results Telling Me? What Can I Do about Feeling Tired, Stressed, and Burned Out? What Can I Learn from Student Ratings? What Do Students Want in Online Courses? For those who have bigger chucks of time to invest, consider these books which address a variety of teaching topics. Books Active Learning: Creating Excitement in the Classroom (Bonwell) Creating Significant Learning Experiences: An Integrated Approach to Designing College Courses (Fink - 2 copies) Education Nation: Six Leading Edges of Innovation in Our Schools (Chen) Make It Stick: The Science of Successful Learning (Brown et al. - 2 copies) McKeachie s Teaching Tips: Strategies, Research, and Theory for College and University Teachers (Svinicki and McKeachie) Mob Rule Learning: Camps, Unconferences, and Trashing the Talking Head (Boule - 2 copies) On Course: A Week-by-Week Guide to Your First Semester of College Teaching (Lang) Teaching at Its Best: A Research-Based Resource for College Instructors (Nilson - 2 copies) The Seven Futures of American Education (Sener) Visible Learning and the Science of How We Learn (Hattie - 2 copies) What the Best College Students Do (Bain) What the Best College Teachers Do (Bain) Visit the CETL to borrow these resources. Podcast with the Author Who Wrote What the Best College Teachers Do By: Briana Taylor In the last edition of the CETL Newsletter, I wrote a review on the book What the Best College Teachers Do. I recently stumbled upon a podcast from February 2015 that the author of the book, Ken Bain, did with Bonni Stachowiak from Teaching in Higher Ed. Find out if anything has changed since Bain published his book and research results in Listen to the podcast at CETL Insider info.francis.edu/cetl 2
BLACKBOARD Copying and Moving Items in Blackboard By: Briana Taylor Question: How do I copy from one course to another course? I created a folder in one course that I also want to add to another course. Answer: You can copy content such as items, web links, and content folders. Move your mouse over the title, click the drop down arrow, and select Copy. If you want to put the copy in a different course, change the destination course name, then select the folder. If you leave the destination course name the same, it will create a duplicate in the same course. Copying content does not delete the content from the original location. Controlling Course Availability Beginning in Fall 2015, Blackboard courses will be unavailable to students by default, and instructors will have control over when to make the course available to students. Since we have a variety of face-to-face and online courses starting on different dates, the availability setting will allow the CETL to upload rosters to Blackboard for the semester, and the instructor can decide when to make the course available. When you are ready to release the course to students, go to the Control Panel, click Customization > Properties. Set the course available to Yes. The availability setting is also helpful if you do not want students to be able to access the Blackboard materials after the course is over. Instead of using Users and Groups to change the course availability setting for each student, you can make the course unavailable to all student by going to the Control Panel, click Customization > Properties. Set the course availability to No when you no longer want students to have access to it. Question: How do I copy a test or assignment to another course? Answer: You will notice that assessments such as tests and assignments do not have the same copy button that content items do. For assignments you need to build the assignment in the course first, then you can copy and paste the directions. You can export test questions from one course and import them into another. In the Control Panel, click Course Tools > Tests, Surveys, and Pools. Click Tests (Surveys or Pools), then click the drop down arrow next to the title and select export. Save the file. Next, navigate to the other course, click Course Tools > Tests, Surveys, and Pools. Click Tests, and select Import Test. Then deploy the test in a content area to make it available to students. Setting the Course Entry Point The first page students see when entering your course is controlled by a setting in the control panel. Rearranging the order of the course menu will not change the course entry point. To set the entry point, go to the Control Panel, click Customization > Teaching Style. Select the course entry point and click submit. In Teaching Style, you can also change the course menu colors. If your course FAQ menu ever turns completely black, which is a known issue that can happen with copied courses, change the background color of the course menu to white. Again that is under Customization > Teaching Style. CETL Insider info.francis.edu/cetl 3
By: Chelsea Crandall TECHNOLOGY New Features Have you ever asked your students a question during class and wished you could see everyone s answer and quickly tally the responses? Then Poll Everywhere may work for you. Poll Everywhere is a free tool, which allows you to ask questions multiple choice, open ended, or image questions, and have the responses totaled in real time and displayed in nice visual representations. Students can respond using computers, mobile devices, or text messages. Here are some of the new features Poll Everywhere added at the beginning of Polls Using Pictures: Question about a picture. Question with pictures as answer options. Question with clickable image to answer. Configure and Test Panel: Poll Everywhere is making it easier to ask multiple questions to the same audience by allowing you to create a customized session name. This is particularly helpful to people responding via text message. After you create the poll question, you will see a new configure menu with the option for presenter session under text messaging. In Presenter Session mode, the audience can simply text your username once, and then respond to polls by texting a single letter, number, True, False, or an open-ended response. Old The audience texted a generated code for each response. New Now the audiences joins the session once and can quickly respond to questions. Don t like your current username? You can change it by clicking on your username in the configure panel or clicking settings. Next, use the new test feature to preview what the audience will see and learn how people can respond from the web or text message. Source: CETL Insider info.francis.edu/cetl 4

By the end of the session, faculty will have a good head-start to preparing an online course for review by the Distance Education Committee. Set Up Online Sessions in Blackboard Collaborate Blackboard Collaborate web conferencing can be used to host live online classes, group meetings, virtual office hours, or remote guest speakers, and you can even record the session. Learn how to schedule a session, use microphones and web cameras, interact with participant tools, and manage an online session as a moderator. You will also get a list of best practices for hosting live online sessions, and information to provide your students or participants on how to download the launcher and join the session. Use Synchronous Activities to Keep Students Engaged in Blackboard Collaborate Learn how to make your live online sessions engaging and interactive. It is often hard to tell if your online students are paying attention on the other side of the computer screen. Use these activities to keep students alert, get student input, and check for understanding. We will go through six synchronous activities that get students participating through microphones, chat, whiteboard tools, and break-out rooms. Deliver Stellar Customer Service in a High-Tech World Every time you communicate with a customer, student, parent, or vendor you create an impression of the University. In this workshop we will discuss communication strategies, proper etiquette, and how to deliver great service to customers you might talk to in person, on the phone, or online. Let s Talk about Teaching: Getting Students to Prepare for Class One common challenge for many faculty members is getting students to prepare for class. A recent Magna Publications webinar Prepared Students: The Secret's in the Assignment Strategy presents one interesting approach. Join your colleagues in the CETL or online for an open lunchtime discussion of this approach and to share ideas for getting students to prepare for class. Please register at least 1 day before the workshop to btaylor@francis.edu or twilson@francis.edu. Online workshops will be hosted using Blackboard Collaborate. You will need computer speakers and a microphone or to call in via telephone. You will receive an with the meeting link and directions. CETL Insider info.francis.edu/cetl 5
