Emory of Study ~ Florida Satellite Program Policies and Procedures PURPOSE of COS The of Study educates and trains Local Pastors in the United Methodist Church. The Florida Satellite program is sponsored by the of Study School at Emory, the Florida Annual Conference, and General Board of Higher Education and Ministry. The five- year of Study (COS) is conducted in a two- weekend model that includes class sessions on Friday evenings from 6p- 9p and Saturdays from 8a- 5p. Students must attend all four sessions to receive credit for the course. Students are allowed to miss a maximum of four classroom hours over the two weekends. However, absences reflect negatively on one s participation grade. The COS Florida Satellite Program is designed for part- time local pastors only, who have met the following requirements: Certified Candidate Completed License School Endorsed by the Annual Conference Supply Pastors and those eligible for but not currently under appointment may attend if endorsed by the District Superintendent and the Annual Conference. Those serving as a full- time Local Pastor must attend one of the eight Regional School programs located at a United Methodist School of Theology. CURRICULUM The Five- Year of Study is a year- round experiential and classroom learning process. The process assumes cooperation between instructors in the of Study Schools and the clergy mentors in the annual conference. s are to be taken in sequence prescribed by the COS curriculum. Thus, students should complete the 100 level courses before taking the 200, 300, and 400 level courses. All 100-400 level courses should be completed prior to a student registering for a 500 level course. REGISTRATION PROCESS Please complete the entire registration form, including the signatures of your DS and Conference LPR before mailing it to the COS office with your correct payment. Students will be sent an invoice prior to the start of class that will indicate if you owe money. All course fees are due at registration during the first weekend of each session. TRANSCRIPTS & RECORDS The Emory COS Office will maintain student records and report them following each session to the General Board of Higher Education and Ministry and to your Annual Conference. Students can obtain a copy of the transcript by emailing cosregistrar@gbhem.org. The COS Office does not issue transcripts; those are only issued by GBHEM. PRECOURSE WORK All students are required to complete assignments prior to the start of class precourse work. Each course assignment sheet will contain the books that need to be purchased and read for the course. The ISBN numbers for each book as well as a link to Cokesbury.com are listed on the precourse assignment for purchasing books. You can use another vendor but make sure you order and receive the correct books. In addition to the books and readings there are required written assignments listed on each precourse assignment sheet. These will include the due dates for assignments. The precourse assignments will be due two- weeks prior to the first class session, and maybe submitted late for letter grade deductions. Students who have not submitted precourse assignments prior to the first weekend of class will be withdrawn and not allowed to attend the course.
