Assistant Teacher School Age Assistant PROGRAMS OF STUDY Child Development courses prepare students f employment as an aide, teacher, / direct in a preschool a child care center (including infant/toddler facilities), as family child care providers, f other Child Development careers in early childhood education fields. Courses are also appropriate f parents, nannies, recreation leaders, camp counsels, elementary school teaching assistants (some classes may be used as a foundation f elementary school teachers), social services health care practitioners, early childhood administrats, others wking with young children. Community Care Licensing State Regulations require students who wk with young children to have a minimum of 12 unit in Child Development. CHDV 100 115 are required ce courses. Students can choose two other curriculum 3 unit CHDV courses to complete the 12 units. Suggested courses are CHDV 105, 125, 130, 135, 140, 185. Certificates meet the course requirements f teachers, site superviss, directs of private child care programs licensed by the Califnia State Department of Social Services (Title 22), Community Care Licensing. The program also meets the course requirements f the Child Development Permit issued by the Califnia Commission on Teacher Credentialing. Child Development programs that are state funded federally funded (Title 5 programs such as, Head Start, state preschool, etc.) follow the Child Development Permit matrix. In addition to the course wk listed in the certificate, students must have experience wking with young children in der to obtain an actual Child Development Permit from the State of Califnia. F specific questions relating to the Child Development Permit, please contact the Child Development department chair f further infmation. In der to earn any of the Child Development degrees certificates, students must achieve a minimum grade of C in each of the required courses. CHDV 195 is required f the Child Development Permit issued by the Commission on Teacher Credentialing f Master Teacher, Site Supervis, Program Direct permits. Introduces the concepts of APA writing fmat, Child Development department requirements f observations lesson plans, skills to develop an online professional ptfolio, creating a degree completion plan. It is strongly recommended that students complete this course in the first semester of enrollment in a Child Development program. CHDV 100 Child Growth Development (3) ; UC C-ID CDEV 100 Introducty course that examines the maj physical, psychosocial, cognitive/language developmental milestones f children, both typical atypical, from conception through adolescence. There will be an emphasis on interactions between maturational processes environmental facts. While studying developmental they investigative research methodologies, students will observe children, evaluate individual differences analyze characteristics of development at various stages. CHDV 101 Principles Practices of Teaching Young Children (3) C-ID ECE 120 An examination of the underlying theetical principles of developmentally appropriate practices applied to programs, environments, emphasizing the key role of relationships, constructive adult-child interactions, teaching strategies in suppting physical, social, creative intellectual development f all young children. This course includes a review of the histical roots of early childhood programs the evolution of the professional practices promoting advocacy, ethics, professional identity. CHDV 102 Wking with Parents Families (3) Establishes the roles of preschool teachers, child-care providers, early childhood administrats as effective partners with parents by developing a familycentered approach to parent involvement. Examines cultural developmental diversity in relation to parent family interactions contacts. Develops skills techniques in familial involvement including: communication, home visits, conferences, parent education, group contacts with parents. CHDV 103 Infant Toddler Development (3) A study of the process of human development from conception to 36 months of age, as influenced by heredity, society, human interaction, with implications f guidance. Prenatal development the birth process are examined. In addition to typical atypical developmental milestones in all domains, a focus on attachment in relation to development is emphasized. CHDV 104 Guidance f Young Children (3) Designed to increase understing of children s behavi. Exples effective techniques f dealing with issues including separation, peer interaction, fears, frustrations aggression. Emphasizes teaching children pro-social interactions, self control, decision making skills. Focuses on understing behavi as communication expression of needs. Concepts of effective practice f infant toddler care with an emphasis on communication, cultural differences, problem-solving, providing an appropriate nurturing environment f children of all ability levels. CHDV 108 Developmentally Appropriate Principles Practices (1) 1 hour lecture Designed to introduce developmentally appropriate practices (DAP) early learning stards (ELS). A focus will be placed on current best practices in curriculum activities, methods, materials appropriate f planning a program f young children. Techniques f incpating early learning stards into developmentally appropriate curriculum will be expled. 141

Child Development CHDV 110 Introduction to Special Education (3) Provides an overview of special education in the United States, including the histical antecedents, legislation, disability categies covered by IDEA. Discussion of societal, family, classroom issues relevant to children with special needs. Focus on fostering understing respect f people with differences, their families, the professionals that serve them. This course does not focus on classroom teaching strategies specifically, rather it is an overview of the special education system in the US. CHDV 112 Early Intervention Inclusion (3) Recommended preparation: CHDV 110 This course focuses on the theies, research, practical applications of special education in an early childhood setting, specifically with children from birth to age 8. Topics covered will include curriculum modification accommodation strategies to facilitate the development of cognitive, mot, social, emotional, language skills in infants, toddlers, young children with disabilities. Specific emphasis will be placed on developing classroom behavi management plans, collabative teaching strategies, understing the IFSP IEP process as it relates to early childlhood, methods f wking with professionals in the field as well as the families of children with special needs.
