Chart for Teacher Education Applicants If you are interested in becoming a teacher and obtaining a teaching credential, the chart below is designed to assist in filling out the CGU application as a Teacher Education Applicant. Please read the descriptions below to identify which program you are interested in and then use the chart for assistance with specified items on the application. For additional guidance please refer to the Teacher Education Glossary at the end of this document. Program Descriptions: Credential + M.A. For individuals who want to teach and do not already possess a teaching credential. In this program you will obtain a Credential and an M.A. degree in Education. This is our flagship program and the most common choice. Clear Credential This is the Induction Program for individuals who already possess a Credential and would like to clear their credential. If you are not familiar with what a Clear Credential is, the Credential + M.A. is most likely the program for you. Credential Only (no M.A.) For individuals who want a teaching credential and do NOT want a Master s Degree, typically because they already have an M.A. This is a very atypical choice. Teacher Education Glossary Use the glossary below for assistance with terms commonly associated with becoming a credentialed teacher in California. Term Clear Credential Education Specialist (credential) General Education (credential) Induction Program Multiple Subject (credential) M/M M/S Credential Single Subject (credential) Definition Credential obtained by completing the Induction Program. This is the final step in California s two step teacher credentialing process. Also known as Special Education credential, a credential that allows you to teach Special Education classes. You can specialize in students with Mild to Moderate disabilities (M/M) or Moderate to Severe disabilities (M/S). Refers to any non Special Education credential. For example, Single Subject (secondary) and Multiple Subject (elementary) credentials are all considered general education credentials. Program to obtain a clear credential. Completed after you obtain a preliminary teaching credential. Credential to teach Elementary school students. It is called multiple subject because elementary school teachers teach multiple subjects (Reading, Science, Math, etc.) to their students. Stands for Mild/Moderate, a designation for Special Education teaching credentials (you are credentialed to teach students with Mild to Moderate disabilities) Stands for Moderate/Severe, a designation for Special Education teaching credentials (you are credentialed to teach students with Moderate to Severe disabilities) When you first decide you want to become a teacher, this is the credential you have in mind. The preliminary credential is the first credential in California s two step credentialing process (the second is the Clear Credential). A preliminary credential can be Multiple Subject (to teach Elementary school students), Single Subject (to teach Secondary school students), or Special Education (to teach Special Education students). Credential to teach Secondary school students (Middle and High school). You will need to select a specific subject (CGU currently offers English, Math, Social Studies, Spanish, and Science)
Teacher Education : Additional Information Regarding Required Materials Standardized Test Scores Mailing Address: Teacher Education Claremont Graduate University 925 N. Dartmouth Avenue Claremont, CA 91711 In addition to entering your test scores in the online application, a copy of your test scores must be submitted with your application. You may upload score reports in the Upload Supporting Documents section of the online application (upload under Additional Documents ). If you receive your test scores after submitting your application (or if you have more score reports than you are permitted to upload) please send them to the Teacher Education Office (address at left) or email an electronic copy to the Credential Analyst at Rosa.Rosas@cgu.edu. CBEST The CBEST is required for all Teacher Education applicants. Your application will not be considered complete until we receive a copy of your CBEST score report. CSET Applicants are required to submit CSET scores OR proof of registration for an upcoming test. Applicants who have already passed the appropriate CSET examination or who have a subject matter waiver letter in the area for which they are seeking their credential should submit these scores to CGU. Personal Statement For the personal statement, please respond to the following prompts with a 2 3 page statement (typed, double spaced), and upload the response in the Upload Supporting Documents section of the online application. 1. Why are you pursuing this program? In what ways do your reasons reflect your personal values and professional goals? 2. What special gifts (intellectual, linguistic, physical or spiritual) or special interests or experiences (athletics, art or music, travel or volunteer work) do you bring with you to the challenge of teaching/working with youth? 3. Please describe in detail your experiences teaching/working with youth. 4. What needs to be done in today's schools that you are personally committed to addressing in your work with youth? 5. Please describe the role that the principles of academic excellence, social justice and integrity have played in your own life and how you would encourage the development of these principles in your work.
