George Fox University s Graduate Department of Clinical Psychology George Fox s PsyD program integrates a curriculum based on the practitioner-scholar model, intensive hands-on clinical practice, meaningful research, and a Christian faith perspective all in a community of caring people who live in a beautiful area of the country. A Holistic Approach A holistic view of mental health includes a spiritual component. At George Fox University, we give explicit training in the relationship between mental health and Christian faith. The central distinctive of the program is the integration of a Christian worldview and the science of psychology at philosophical, practical, and personal levels. Our program offers specialized training in dealing with the psychological aspects of religious or spiritual issues. Theoretical orientations represented by the faculty include psychodynamic, behavioral, cognitive-behavioral, object relational, family systems, and psychobiological. Despite its diversity in theoretical orientation, the faculty is united by a common commitment to a Christian worldview, to providing high-quality professional training, and to upholding the highest standards of scholarship, ethics, and clinical expertise among its students. APA Accredited George Fox University s Graduate Department of Clinical Psychology (GDCP) is fully accredited by the American Psychological Association*. While the PsyD degree provides training in the scientific foundations of psychology and in research methods and statistics, it places greater emphasis on the development of clinical skills. *The American Psychological Association s Commission on Accreditation is located at 750 First Street N.E., Washington, D.C., 20002. Phone: 202-336-5979. George Fox is located in the fertile Willamette Valley, home to rolling green vineyards, the Willamette River, and tranquil country roads.

Among the area s many bike routes is the Willamette Valley Scenic Bikeway, a 130-mile trek that showcases the region s agricultural landscape and the sites where Oregon history was made.

An Enviable Location: The Pacific Northwest George Fox University is located in the beautiful Pacific Northwest, home to lush green valleys, the Cascade Mountain Range, and the splendor of the Pacific Ocean. Once you re here, you ll have plenty to explore: Oregon is 96,981 square miles of diverse geographical features, ranging from the valleys, ocean and mountains of the west to the highdesert country in the eastern part of the state. Newberg, home to George Fox, is situated along the Willamette River, between the Oregon Coast and the spectacular Cascade Mountains. Whatever your interest, it s probably just a short drive away 45 minutes to the vibrant cultural life of Portland 60 minutes to the Pacific Ocean 90 minutes to the slopes of Mt. Hood Portland, just 23 miles from our home in Newberg, offers a wide variety of cultural, shopping, and entertainment opportunities. Among the attractions: Saturday Market, scenic gardens and walkways, and annual festivals that include the Bite of Portland and the Rose Festival.

More world-class attractions in Oregon: Powell s City of Books in Portland is probably the world s greatest bookstore according to the Seattle Times. The Columbia River Gorge attracts windsurfers from around the globe. Smith Rock State Park in Central Oregon boasts 1,400 climbing routes. Multnomah Falls, 45 minutes from Newberg, is the second highest year-round waterfall in the United States, plummeting 620 feet. Our home: Newberg Just 23 miles from Portland, Newberg is a friendly community of 20,500. Side roads lead to hillside vineyards and working farms. In town, you ll find bookstores, art galleries, coffee shops that feature live music, and movie theaters. You ll begin to understand how the town s relaxed pace and independent culture attracts the friendly people who live here. George Fox s residential campus is just a block from downtown Newberg, home to independent coffee shops that make ideal getaways for reading or casual get-togethers.

Excellence in Training The GDCP received a highly favorable review by the APA during the program s 2003-04 reaccreditation visit. A seven-year reaccreditation period was awarded, the longest interval allowed. The facts One-hundred percent of recent eligible students have been placed at internship sites nationally, more than 85 percent in accredited and/or approved sites. More than 90 percent of program grads are employed as psychologists and are licensed or working toward licensure. Approximately 30 percent of recently enrolled students present at professional meetings or publish in professional journals before graduation. GDCP faculty publish at levels above the average found at other PsyD programs nationally. The program s training receives consistently high ratings by external practicum and internship site supervisors. The program is an active member of the National Association of Schools and Programs of Professional Psychology. On campus, enjoy the benefits of a full weight room, a gym with three regulation-sized basketball courts, newly refurbished tennis courts, racquetball courts, and an eight-lane oval track.

Faculty Mentors George Fox PsyD professors are mentors who provide guidance throughout the entire program. Faculty members get to know you and your interests and talents. Most importantly, they are available to help you develop professionally, personally, and spiritually. The atmosphere in the department office says it all: a sense of camaraderie, dedication and excitement pervades in a place where faculty and students interact closely, as colleagues and as friends. Research Teams PsyD students at George Fox become members of vertically integrated research teams that meet biweekly with professors. Teams consist of small groups of students from each year in the program. First-year students visit all research teams to observe and learn about the areas of research being undertaken. In the second year, students commit to a team and engage in research under the direction of a faculty member. This research will culminate in completion and defense of a doctoral dissertation. The first two years emphasize the scientific foundations of psychology and theological studies and an introduction to clinical theory and practice. As the student advances in the program, the emphasis shifts toward application in clinical practice. An Integrated Five-Year Program Professional training in assessment and psychotherapy begins in the first year with course work and prepracticum, and continues throughout the program, culminating in the full-time clinical internship during the fifth year. Recreational activities abound in Oregon. Go skiing on Mt. Hood or Mt. Bachelor, take a hike up a mountain or a wilderness trail, surf in the Pacific, or go fly fishing in a tranquil stream or lake.

Multnomah Falls, in the Columbia River Gorge, is one of several must-see scenic attractions in the region. You can also explore Silver Creek Falls and the Oregon Garden in nearby Silverton, an annual tulip festival in nearby Woodburn, or the rugged beauty of Smith Rock near Bend in Central Oregon.

A Community-Minded Approach The George Fox community extends far beyond campus borders. As a PsyD student, you will get the opportunity to gain personal and clinical experiences in urban, rural, and international settings. As a university, this civic-minded approach is most evident on Serve Day, when the entire campus closes for a day and sends more than 1,300 volunteers into Newberg and surrounding communities to volunteer at nonprofit and public agencies. Within the PsyD community, you will form lifelong friendships in our cohort model. Social and academic gatherings outside the classroom are routine, as our students and their families study, play, and worship together. Enjoy theatrical, music and athletic activities on campus. Each year, George Fox hosts three main stage plays, numerous concerts, and intercollegiate contests in 15 sports at the NCAA Division III level.

Career Choices George Fox PsyD graduates are successful in many domains of professional practice, including: Therapy Consultation Psychological assessment Test development Higher education Research Graduates are prepared for licensure as clinical psychologists.
