Resources for Once you have clarified the requirements for your open position, and created a suitable job announcement, it is time to advertise the position and distribute the announcement. Not surprisingly, the wider and more diverse the outreach, the more people will learn of your opportunity, respond themselves, or forward to others who may wish to apply. As might be expected, there are many online resources available to your organization to utilize in your candidate search. You will see a range of different options here, ranging from generic job websites to ones that are more specific to the type of position you are seeking. General job boards, such as Indeed or SimplyHired, will give you a wide range of possible candidates. Smaller, more targeted job boards will allow you to get resumes or responses from people that are relevant for the open position. You may not get as many candidates as on a large job board, but they may be more qualified and therefore accelerate the search process. Typical job sites serve two different groups: job seekers and employers. On many websites, job seekers can upload their resumes so you can search for potential candidates. Some websites also provide job seekers additional resources such as highlighting possible positions, alerting seekers to new listings, and tracking cover letters and applications. For the employer, these websites provide you the ability to post a position, check resumes of candidates, receive email alerts regarding a possible candidate, receive applications on line and even employ recruitment services to aid in your job search. Costs for posting positions vary widely, as do the services offered for free and at a cost. Tips to Improve your Search Advertise using a traditional job title (Development Director vs. Chief Fundraiser) o This will increase the chances that your posting will appear in the search results on social media sites, search engines and on different job boards Make the posting easy to read and understand o Avoid long paragraphs where important information can get lost. o Use bullet points and categorize information about the position so candidates clearly comprehend what to expect (qualifications, responsibilities, experience, etc.) Cross- post your opening, if possible o Some positions, such as IT or public relations jobs, could be advertised on different sites 1

Highlight perks o Communicate to job seekers why your organization is a great place to work (ask your current employees what is the best part about working in your organization) o Specify benefits when possible Consider upgrading your posting o Pay a little extra to make your position stand out from the others Make some reference to salary o Research has indicated that some job seekers are turned off when there is no mention of salary information in job postings o Reference compensation if you can. At least, give a salary range or a statement such as competitive pay, salary negotiable or compensation commensurate with experience. Use the resume databases on job boards o Leverage the job board s resume database as a way to evaluate and/or eliminate candidates. o Candidates who have recently updated their profiles are typically seen first in your search Don t forget to post your job opening on your own website o Put the announcement prominently on your home page o Remember that someone who is viewing your website will most likely be interested in your mission and will educate themselves about your organization Use the TREC Job Board o Post an opening on the at the job board at www.trec.org Exploit contacts you have with other organizations and nonprofits o Talk with nonprofits like yours and ask to post your job on their website o Contact other organizations in your community and network to let them know of your open position Post jobs on college and university boards that serve alumni o Many colleges and universities have a career office where you can post jobs online Some colleges and universities have special services for alumni job searchers and employer recruiters o Focus on institutions that have degree programs related to your nonprofit mission Contact funders, colleagues, campaigns and coalitions 2
