LPN/Paramedic to Registered Nursing Program Information for Applicants The application deadline is October 15 by noon. The LPN/Paramedic Registered Nursing Program at ASUMH is designed to prepare the student to become a Registered Nurse. The Associate of Applied Science in Registered Nursing degree combines classroom and online instruction with clinical experience. Classes will meet two evenings per week. Nine hours of clinicals are required each week. The course of study meets the requirements of the Arkansas State Board of Nursing for registered nursing programs. The student must maintain a 2.5 GPA or higher in order to graduate and be eligible to apply for the National Council of Licensure Examination for Registered Nurses (NCLEX-RN). There is no advanced placement in this program. Students must complete all required nursing courses with a grade of C or higher. Persons convicted of a crime may be ineligible to take the licensing exam, NCLEX-RN, to become a Registered Nurse. State and federal criminal background checks by the Arkansas State Police and Federal Bureau of Investigation are required for licensure. It is possible to complete a program of study at ASUMH and be denied the opportunity to take the NCLEX-RN by the Arkansas State Board of Nursing. ADMISSION CRITERIA Applicants are considered for the Nursing Program after completing a formal application for admission to ASUMH and submitting it to the Office of Admissions, including submission of all required admission credentials (see the ASUMH Catalog and Student Handbook Admission Section). ALL information must be submitted prior to October 15. An application for the Registered Nursing program must be completed and returned to the Health Science Coordinator, located in the Health Science Building, H101, prior to October 15 at noon, including all appropriate testing results. Applicants must provide a current unencumbered Arkansas LPN license or Paramedic certification number. Licensure or certification will be verified through the appropriate board prior to admission. Students must have a minimum cumulative GPA of 2.5 to qualify for admission to the program. Any applicant seeking transfer credit for prerequisite courses must submit official transcripts to the Registrar s office. Applicants will not be considered for admission if official transfer credit for prerequisite courses is not granted by the Registrar s office and/or if applicant cannot provide proof they are enrolled and progressing satisfactorily in prerequisite courses at the time of application. After the selection process is completed, applicants will be notified by mail of acceptance or denial. If applicants choose not to accept their position in the program then the next applicant on the list will be notified. *Students whose primary language is not English must score 79 or higher on reading, listening, and writing skills and 23 or higher on speaking skills TOEFL scores. An official score report must be submitted. This is a requirement of the Arkansas State Board of Nursing. After acceptance into the Registered Nursing Program, the student is required to submit the following by deadline specified in the admissions packet: 1. Proof of negative PPD tuberculin skin test or negative chest x-ray if the skin test is positive. 2. Proof of Tetanus/Diphtheria immunization. 3. Documentation of completion or initiation of the hepatitis series. Students must complete the first hepatitis vaccine before entering the clinical area in the first semester. (If the student cannot take the series, due to health reasons, the student must sign a waiver.) 4. Student must provide proof of American Heart Association CPR certification. Test dates for Spring 2015 Admission: All applicants must take the appropriate HESI Entrance Exam prior to the October 15 deadline. There are two different versions of the exam, please verify that you are signing up for the correct one. There is the HESI EMS- ADN Entrance exam for incoming Paramedic students and the HESI LPN-ADN Entrance exam for incoming LPN students. Preregistration for the admission exam is mandatory. You can register for the exam here: http://www.registerblast.com/asumh/exam/index?group=2397. All applicants will also be required to take the Reading portion of the COMPASS exam. This exam will need to be taken immediately following the appropriate HESI exam. No previous testing results outside of the application time frame will be valid for entrance into the Associate of Applied Science in Registered Nursing. A minimum score of 82 is required.
