WC-1 archaeologist artifact

A scientist who studies the life and culture of ancient people. An object, such as a tool, made by humans.

WC-1 climate climate zone

The weather in an area averaged over a long period of time. Regions on Earth that share a common climate.

fossil glacial period

The remains of a plant or animal preserved in rock, another geological deposit, or petrified. A geologic period during which large areas of Earth were covered by glaciers.

interglacial period migration

A geologic period between two glacial periods during which Earth s climate warmed and glaciers receded. The movement of animals, including humans, from one location to another.

natural resources Paleolithic period

Materials, such as soil, water, minerals, and energy, that people use from nature and natural systems. The period between 2.5 million years ago and 12,000 years ago, during which early Stone Age human culture was marked by the steady development of tools, first made of stone and then of more sophisticated materials.

Pleistocene epoch population

The geologic era that began 1.8 million years ago and ended about 12,000 BCE, often called the Ice Age because it was characterized by cold periods accompanied by widespread glaciers. The number of individuals of a species living in a place at a given time.

settlement technique

The process of populating a community or area. A way of accomplishing a task.

tool

A device used to help accomplish a task, such as an ax or hammer.
