SAFECYCLE: enhancing safety of cyclists with ICT POLIS conference Brussels, 29 & 30 November 2011 Marjolein de Jong Universiteit Hasselt Instituut voor Mobiliteit (IMOB)

Safer cycling with ICT? Alcohol 7% of all accidents in the EU: cyclists What are reasons? Motorized traffic: speed & mass Bicycle related accidents Cycle technique Limited protection Bad visibility 2

Reduction accidents The typical methods Invest in cycling! Creation of separate cycle infrastructure Increasing visibility of cyclists Lower speed car traffic (where mixed, intersections) SAFECYCLE aims at contributing the following Identification of e-safety apps enhancing safety of cyclists Increase of knowledge about the possibilities of ICT Speed up the application of e-safety apps for the bicycle 3

Inventarisation apps Juni november 2011: Inventarisation applications (min. 50) Dec 2011 juli 2012: SWOT & Impact Assessment (min. 10) Augustus nov. 2012: Research agenda & recommendations 4

Cyclist airbag Airbag for cyclists glasses High vision glasses helmet Bicycle Helmet Communicator Blink Helmet clothing Speed vest visibility pro-active intelligent clothing http://speedvest.com/ Speed Vest Prototype Cycle speed is communicated on the back of the jacket and traffic can anticipate Effect: improved visibility and speed information 5

Protection & indication BlinkHelmet Idea (Giovanni Doci, Italië) Airbag for cyclists Idea (Hövding, Zweden) Tapping the helmet activates the direction indicators Effect: improved visibility A fast und atypical movement activates the airbag and protects the head Effect: reduced severeness of injuries after an accident 6

Bicycle bicycle design ABS (Anti-lock Braking Systems) prevents wheels to slide during braking direction indicator on steer e-bike speed limiter fall detection on bicycle (not stand alone) SaveCap Speed limiters pedelecs steering wheel that opens when falling to prevent abdominal wounds e-bike The Copenhagen Wheel USB-equipped urban bike visibility Bicycle braking light Bike Light Cyglo Tyre day Time Running lights for cyclist Hokey spokes rear light communication Context aware bicycles ecall for cyclists warning system Bike Bleeper Safety Personal Area Network System physical problems Duo-bikes HindSight35 Stability and hearing problems 7

E-bike Copenhagen Wheel Prototype Hindsight 35 Prototype E-bike wheel transforms a normal bike into an electrical bike and allows use of measuring, tracking and communication devices. Effect: information about safety, health, routes Screen on the steering wheel provides information about situation behind the bicycle Effect: knowledge about what is going on behind the bicycle without manoeuvres 8

Visibility http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=mq6awqzuemo&feature=player_embedded#! CygloTyre Prototype Hokey Spokes For sale A movement sensor in the tyre activates the leds in the sides of the wheel Effect: increased visibility of the bicycle when driving Blades on the spokes can be programmes for different light effects and are activated by movement of the bike. Effect: increased visibility of the bicycle 9

Detection http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=csp9xltdy3o Airbag ter bescherming van fietsers In development (TNO APROSYS) NextGenITS In development Airbag on the bonnet and windows protects the cyclist in case of an collision Effect: reduced severeness of injuries in case of collission V2V en V2I communication allows detection of bicycles and to anticipate on them by adapting speed or braking Effect: prevention of collisions with cyclists 11

Blind spot Popradar blind spot Existing See-Mi Existing (Copenhagen, London) A radar detects moving objects in the blind spot and gives an alarm. Some systems block the engine of the vehicle. Effect: prevention of blind spot accidents The bicycles sends a signal with a special reflector to a receiver at the intersection showing the presence of a cyclist. Effect: prevention of blind spot accidents 12

Infrastructure Cycle lane LED-Mark Street projection A local bike lane on your handlebars Laser Light Bike Light Lane Bike Projected bike lane Visibility asphalt with photovoltaic panels - illuminated cycle path lights adapting to the surrounding luminosity Communication Speed information traffic accounting systems that measure number of cyclists Intersection Blinking Leds at crossings Monitoring & action snow and ice clearance Traffic light Anticipating Traffic Lights Anticipating Traffic Lights - cars Countdown Pedestrian lights Cyclist traffic light for rain Fahrrad Ampel Green Wave Traffic Eye Zürich Waiting indication Pedestrian lights Detection Intersafe II (intersections) Moped Warning System Vision project Warning system Interactive Bicyle Signal Music Cycle Lanes See-mi 13

Safety zone Light Lane Existing patent has been applied for Self powered Laser Idea A green laser projects a cycle lane behind the bicycle. Effect: increased visibility of the bycicle De laser projects a green light around the bicycle that turns red in case a car enters the safety zone of the bicycle. Effect: increase visibility & notification of danger 14

Preference for cyclist Traffic Eye Zürich Realised in spring 2011 Moped detection with acoustic profiles Realised in Apeldoorn To prevent conflicts with trams, bicycles get green before PT. Effect: preference for cyclists to prevent for risc full situations with trams and busses Moped (that are not allowed on the cycle lane) are detected with sound profiles. This activates the camera and the offender receives a fine Effect: less use of infrastructure by mopeds 15

Free way Interactive Cycle Signal Idea Green Wave Kopenhagen, Odense buiten werking Smart sensors warn cyclist for forthcoming traffic. Meant for roads in hilly terrain or with a lot of curves where visibility is a problem. Effect: information about forthcoming traffic Cyclist following the design speed get green light at intersections. Speed measurments help to calibrate the speed. Effect: prevention of running red light 16

Route planning Citizens Connect Existing: Boston, USA Fietsrouteplanner Gent Existing: Gent Citizens take active part in reporting dangerous situations, e.g. snow or ice. Reporting will be followed up by action. Effect: less one-sided accidents Potentially dangerous situations for cyclists like tram tracks, cobble stones or very busy roads can be avoided by the route planner. Effect: safer routes 18

Visibility & red light Bicycle Light Existing Signal Guru Prototype is tested De smart phone used as a light. The phone can be programmed in different ways as a dynamic or static light and also with different colors. Effect: increased visibility Prediction of green by scanning traffic lights with the camera and connect the info with location information and system time. Effect: less red light negation 19

ICT & fiets? Ja, maar.. Lower speed where a lot of cyclists are to be expected (ISA) ICT should not give false feelings of safety and doesn t take over the responsibility of the driver. Interactive application may have a counter effective result of the driving task load increases and attention on traffic decreases Somme applications are useful to increase the visibility of the cyclist and to contribute in the emancipation of cycling as a normal transport mode Hidden ICT applications in infrastructure, bicycles and other vehicles may be effective and are not depending on the cyclist 20
