VOL. 97, No. 9 www.ldaf.la.gov May 1, 2014 For the second year in a row, the Covington Food Bank donated fresh meat to food insecure families. The Covington Food Bank serves, on average, 360 families each week in the St. Tammany, Tangipahoa and Washington parishes. Please deliver this Market Bulletin to: Chris Meredith, Chappapeela Farms; Brent Robbins, LDAF deputy commissioner; Lucille Kelley, STP Jr. Livestock Auction Buyer; David Huval, II, Huval Properties; Bobby Yarborough, Manda's Fine Meats; Pete Rudesill, LDAF; LDAF Commissioner Mike Strain; Samantha Goodwin, Representative for Public Service Commissioner Eric Skrmetta; Dennis Sharp, St. Tammany Parish Councilman; John Lalla, Natco Food Services; Fred Bass, LDAF; Sandy Robbins, STP Jr. Livestock Association past president; Dobby Lachney, DOCAR. Businesses Support 4-H, FFA; Donate Meat to Area Food Bank For the second year in a row, the Covington Food Bank donated fresh meat to food insecure families. The meat was provided by community and business leaders. The hogs, lambs and goats were purchased through St. Tammany 4-H in which the money raised there goes to the young 4-H members. We re supporting 4-H. We love the education the participants are getting and we always believe in giving back to the community. It s the need that s being filled and you know you re a part of that, said Bobby Yarborough of Manda Fine Meats. For many of the participants, they have a connection to 4-H. My children were and my grandchildren are in the 4-H. This means a lot for us to help the 4-H kids and the community. We hope to continue doing this, said David Huval with Huval s trucking. The Covington Food Bank serves, on average, 360 families each week in the St. Tammany, Tangipahoa and Washington parishes. Mildred Creel is a food bank recipient and expressed how thankful she was for the meat donation. Meat is expensive so this is very helpful. Brian Fabregas with ServiceMaster said, It s nice to help out the community we work in and give people what they need. The development director for the food bank, Jamie Andrepont, said they re grateful for the support from the Junior Livestock Association. Occasionally, we ll get a donation of hot dogs or chicken, but this is tremendous, especially with it being Easter time. This year, the meat donation more than doubled from 1500 pounds of meat to almost 3500 pounds. There is a demand for local products. That s the world we live in. The companies that purchased the animals were more than willing to participate in this effort, said Chris Meredith who helped broker the sale of the animals. Natco s John Lalla, whose company boxed the fresh meat, added, It s exciting. When we learned of the challenge of getting the meat processed and what it was for, we knew we could handle this. The Louisiana Department of Agriculture and Forestry Commissioner Mike Strain, D.V.M., says he hopes to get more community and 4-H participation with food banks across the state.

Page 2 May 1, 2014 Louisiana Agriculture & Forestry Today Calcasieu Parish men accused of timber theft Baton Rouge, La. (April 22, 2014) Two Calcasieu Parish men are accused of timber thefts in Allen Parish. Louisiana Department of Agriculture and Forestry (LDAF) enforcement agents say an Allen Parish landowner notified them April 9 of a timber theft that occurred on her property. Investigators say the landowner said she contracted with Christian Gorham to perform demolition work on an old house located on her land. The landowner said Gorham asked multiple times if he could cut or remove trees from the property in which the request was denied. Upon inspecting the property, the landowner says she discovered three large red cedar trees and a large pine tree had been cut and removed from the property. A large black walnut tree had been cut but not removed. Investigators say the landowner notified LDAF Enforcement Agents that someone was at her property attempting to cut more trees. LDAF agents and Allen Parish sheriff s deputies responded and located Christian Gorham and John Myers (both of Calcasieu Parish) attempting to load cut limbs of a black walnut tree into a trailer. LDAF Commissioner of Agriculture and Forestry, Mike Strain, D.V.M. said, At the time, investigators say they were given false information by the suspects regarding their identities. Upon confirmation of the individuals involved, arrest warrants were issued. On April 15, John Myers was arrested by Calcasieu sheriff s deputies on warrants and charged with theft of timber, obstruction of justice, simple criminal damage to property and attempted timber theft. According to investigators, Myers admitted he did not have permission to cut and or remove any trees and that he is not a licensed arborist in the State of Louisiana. Myers also admitted to giving false information and delaying the investigation by LDAF enforcement agents. He has been released on $6,500 bond. Gorham was arrested April 21. Charges are pending as of press time. A conservative estimated value of the stolen timber is $10,000. Page 20 May 1, 2014 Former LDAF press secretary, Market Bulletin editor pens book on Louisiana crawfish history Breaux Bridge native Sam Irwin was uniquely positioned to write the book on Louisiana s crawfish history. His grandfather Joe Amy (pronounce it ah-mee) was one of the pioneers of the crawfish business. According to some accounts, Amy was dealing in crawfish from his Henderson location of Amy s Fisheries as early as 1932. Amy also had fish business at Butte la Rose and regularly sent a fish buying boat up and Sam Irwin down the Atchafalaya River during the 1920s. The author worked at Amy s as a crawfish laborer in between semesters as he earned his master s degree in history from the University of Louisiana at Lafayette. At the crawfish dock, Irwin witnessed the evolution of the Atchafalaya Basin s fish-based economy to one dominated by the crawfish market. The sum total of Irwin s esoteric evolution from trained historian, honky-tonk owner, musician, record store owner, used car salesman, history teacher and crawfish buyer to journalist is Louisiana Crawfish: A Succulent History of the Cajun Crustacean. Louisiana Crawfish is a penetrating dissection of the important role crawfish played in the development of Cajun cuisine but also in the haute and street cuisine of New Orleans. Not many Crescent City residents know that, in decades past, the road grid off Canal Street and Hagan Avenue became a swampy area in the spring where crawfish could easily be trapped by city dwellers. In the chapter When Life Gives You Crawfish, Make Etouffee, Irwin lays to rest the popular myth that crawfish consumption was once considered basse classe. There are just too many reported instances in the newspapers of south Louisiana residents crawfishing as a social activity or preparing crawfish to showcase their cooking skills to conclude that crawfish eating was low class, Irwin said. It doesn t sound like they were embarrassed to eat crawfish. On the contrary, they brought out the best china and silver. New Orleans was a large crawfish center until the construction of Airline Highway to Baton Rouge cut off the natural overflow of lakes Pontchartrain and Maurepas. That s probably what created New Orleans interest in the Atchafalaya Basin as a crawfish supply source, he said. Louisiana Crawfish also cites the tiny community of Henderson and its famous crawfish restaurants as the locale where the crawfish industry blossomed. The book explores the rollicking story of the Breaux Bridge Crawfish Festival and tracks the scientific aquaculture research that has now made Acadia Parish the number one crawfish producing area in the state. The book also makes a startling revelation on the genesis of Chinese crawfish. With 80 black and white photographs and 16 pages of color photographs, Louisiana Crawfish: A Succulent History of the Cajun Crustacean, is an enjoyable read and explains clearly why the humble crawfish deserves its culinary accolades. Louisiana Crawfish: A Succulent History of the Cajun Crustacean is available in bookstores, www.historypress.net, www.samirwin.net, online and bait shops. About the author Sam Irwin is a freelance journalist and writer who lives in Baton Rouge. He is the former editor of the Louisiana Market Bulletin, an agricultural journal, and served as the press secretary for the Louisiana Department of Agriculture and Forestry. Currently, he is the public relations director for the American Sugar Cane League. A product of a mixed marriage (his father's family is from north Louisiana, his mother's from the heart of French-speaking Louisiana), Irwin's prose is often set in Louisiana. The LSU AgCenter has announced that after eight years in West Monroe, the 4-H and FFA State Horse Show and Contest will be held July 8-12, 2014, at the Burton Complex in Lake Charles. The 45th annual event is part of the educational project work undertaken by 4-H and FFA horse exhibitors, said AgCenter livestock and horse show manager Dwayne Nunez. Our goal is to provide a wholesome environment where 4-H and FFA members can showcase and enhance the skills learned through their hard work, Nunez said. In a change for this year, high point awards will be given to junior and senior participants in four divisions western, ranch, hunter and timed events. We re able to increase the number of divisions because the Burton Complex has two arenas, Nunez said. This gives contestants more opportunities. Nunez said he expects the expanded divisions will lead to more youths participating in the show. In addition to competitions with animals, the show also includes 4-H and FFA horse judging contests along with public speaking and individual and team demonstration contests, Nunez said.
