Medical Coding is the process of converting physicians or health care providers documentation to ICD-9 codes and procedure codes to CPT codes. Also involves HCPCS (pronounced Hick-picks) codes that identify supplies and drugs for correct billing. Modifiers are used to support additional services or procedures that are rendered to received additional reimbursement for services. Example: Patient presented for office visit = CPT code Physician conducted EKG = CPT procedure code Presented to office with chest pain = ICD-9 code 4

Class Schedule & Attendance Definition of On-line learning: a method of studying in which lectures are broadcast or classes are conducted or over the Internet, without the student's needing to attend a school or college in person. Also referred to as distance learning. Student will be required to call into on-line class via WebEx.com, each Saturday. Class time is scheduled each Saturday morning from 8:30am to 11:30am (except Holidays, calendar will be published). Note: Call in 15-min prior to avoid tardy On occasions whereas student is unable to attend, a recorded, modified version will be sent via email. Missed attendance in excess of 2 absences will require further review by Principal Instructor. Attendance is necessary to ensure passing rate! 11
Assignments & Participation Definition of On-line learning: a method of studying in which lectures are broadcast or classes are conducted or over the Internet, without the student's needing to attend a school or college in person. Also referred to as distance education. Instructor will lecture on current chapter and students will have the ability to pose questions and participate in class by reading and responding to chapter questions. Homework will be reviewed in class. 100% participation is expected in each class. Additional assignments (coding exercises) will be sent via email (Gmail shared drive) and should be returned to instructor before the upcoming class. Timed mid-term and final test will be administered to monitor student s competency with coding curriculum. 12
Length of Coding Program Definition On-line learning: a method of studying in which lectures are broadcast or classes are conducted or over the Internet, without the student's needing to attend a school or college in person. Also referred to as distance education. Coding program is 16 weeks (4 months) in length (excluding Holidays) Student must dedicate time for study and homework each week (up to 4 hours independent study)! Student should call the Principal Instructor for questions during the week. 13
Required Medical Coding Books PMCC Students must provide the following books and information prior to first class and Seminar. Registrants are encouraged to use the current coding books listed below: 2014 CPT-4 2014 ICD-9-CM 2014 HCPCS Current Medical Dictionary (optional) Upon registration completion, Professional Medical Coders Institute will provide ordering information for discounted books through the AAPC.
