PHIA is a national organization that provides credentials and curriculum for Medical Administrative positions in six areas. The State of Kentucky Board for Proprietary Education has licensed PHIA to conduct the following programs in the USA for the educational advancement and credentialing of healthcare professionals: Certification Programs: available online 24/7 Certified Coding Professional (CCP) Certified Coding Professional - Hospital (CCP-H) Certified Coding Professional Audit Specialist (CCP-AS) Diploma Programs: available online 24/7 Medical Terminology/Anatomy (MTA) Fundamentals of Medical Billing and Coding (FOBC) Study Guides: Certified Medical Practice Manager (CMPM) Certified Medical Billing Specialist (CMBS) There are 3 courses involved with our CCP Medical Coding program: Medical Terminology and Anatomy (diploma program), Fundamentals of Billing and Coding (diploma program) and Certified Coding Professional (certification program). These 3 courses will take approximately 9 months to complete. The cost, length, agenda, etc. can be found within this student prospectus. This Prospectus was created to be full of all the information you might need about PHIA. Please note that while this prospectus is lengthy, it should answer most of the questions you might have. An index is located on page 6 for your convenience. PHIA helps position it s students to be successful graduates. Utilizing a broad-based learning system with an on-line component plus access to top educators and advisors, PHIA s students are given the highest opportunity to succeed. The audio/visual on-line learning tools can be reviewed as many times necessary for the student to learn the information. In our Medical Coding Program PHIA teaches Students how to code accurately by using real life situations and practical application. Recognizing a need for a program that is not only conducive to learning but produces effective healthcare professionals, PHIA developed it s own learning tools and teaching patterns. PHIA s goal is to above all produce successful graduates that are highly skilled and accomplished healthcare professionals. PHIA s structured on-line course offers the opportunity to listen/observe the lessons as many time necessary to learn the information. By utilizing our on-line program, PHIA s students have the opportunity to focus on areas where they might need additional help. The virtual classroom offers the chance to revisit the information until satisfied. PHIA offers top advisors available to answer any questions while in the learning process. PHIA cares about its students. Should they need additional help, interaction with top advisors is provided in addition to the structured on-line classes. This component gives PHIA student s the same opportunity that would exist in the classroom environment. Additionally should a student be challenged with some components of an exam the student can contact their faculty advisor to review what specific areas need to be reviewed and further studied. PHIA curriculum offers a higher level of testing which produces higher quality Medical Coders. PHIA utilizes three-part test principles that include multiple choice, true/false and fill-in-the-blank questions. By utilizing this process our healthcare professional graduates are not only highly successful but highly sought after by the medical industry. PHIA offers a credential component. Credentialing is critical for students to test out and move into the healthcare job world quickly. PHIA is one of the top schools in the USA that offers the opportunity to test out in multiple professional courses. After study completion students can move directly to testing to expedite their process into the working environment. PHIA s students have a higher level of success obtaining a job. Since PHIA s focused program offers theory and Real World situations graduates are well educated and sought after. PHIA s 3

4 Medical Coding curriculum is focused on coding where seven out of nine months are spent on coding rules and regulations. PHIA s textbooks help students look beyond coding books such as CPT, ICD-9 and HCPCS to develop an in depth understanding into the world of medical coding. New ONLINE classes begin the first Monday of each month. Each student will be assigned a faculty advisor employed through PHIA and our advisors will be happy to provide the student with any help the student needs. Each lesson can be reviewed as many times as is needed therefore the student can go back and do a review prior to taking the mid-term, final and/or certification exams. Students will also have access to 24/7 help from CLEGA for technical problems. Experienced students are welcomed to try and test out of the MTA and FOBC courses. PHIA also offers hospital coding and auditing courses as well. Once a student becomes a physician or out-patient certified coder they can take their certification a step further and become certified as an Audit Specialist or Hospital coder. This would give the student the knowledge they need to perform their own in-house audits or work in the hospital setting. Information regarding these programs can be found with-in this prospectus. PHIA offers Financial Aid through Jena Mae. See page 42 for additional information on how to apply. One-Stop Career Centers is a national organization that provides educational grants and may be available in your area. Students can check with their local government to see if this is offered or some other type of educational grant is available. You can access the One-Stop Career Centers website at: for information about educational grants. Look for the Map of State One-Stop Web Sites and then click on your state. Students can also find information through this website: Educational grants do not have to be paid back as long as the student accepts a job in the field they were trained. If a student is interested in the WIA program please contact the WIA center in your area and make an appointment with a counselor. It will be important for the student to tell WIA they want to take the PHIA online medical coding course. Each applicant will need an acceptance letter from PHIA and the WIA approved outlines so please contact us so a letter can be drafted. 5 PHIA is approved through the Kentuckiana Works WIA grant program in all Kentucky counties except Boone, Campbell, Carroll, Gallatin, Grant, Kenton, Owen and Pendleton. The WIA program is an educational grant which means the student does not have to pay this money back as long as they accept a job in the field they were trained in. Please look further into this prospectus for additional information on the Kentuckiana Works program. Through study guides PHIA teaches students how to become certified in Billing Compliance & Practice Management. For Medical Professionals who are currently working in Billing, Compliance & Practice Management and want to further their careers by seeking certification in their fields, PHIA offers study guides and testing for credentialing. 11 Benefits of our On-Line Courses What are the advantages of taking our online courses? All presentations are in a neat and easy to follow audio/visual format. Verbal instruction is utilized along with reading and note taking requirements for further educational benefits. Our faculty advisors that aid in the learning procress have a combined 40+ years of experience, and our instructors are certified in coding, auditing, compliance, billing and management. You will be able to view weekly lesson(s) during a time that is best for you. Plus, you will be able to go back into any previously viewed lesson as often as is needed. Once you have completed all lessons for the week you will NOT be allowed to move ahead. We highly recommend you take the time to review each lesson more than once. A faculty advisor will be assigned to you for any additional clarification or help you may need throughout your course. Prior to your first day of class, you will receive a Welcome Letter from your faculty advisor identifying who they are and how they can be reached. Quality customer service is a priority at PHIA. New classes begin the first Monday of every month and each class is limited to 20 students. All quizzes, homework and exams (other than the certification exam), are graded on-line The Certification examination must be proctored and can be taken in the PHIA office or in your hometown. Specific instructions for securing a proctor site would be sent, prior to finishing your course. The course will increase the experienced coder s knowledge of medical insurance coding as well as educate the non-experienced coder. 19 week course -- Upon completion the student will be prepared to take the National Certification Exam. 12

13 Medical Terminology and Anatomy (MTA) Diploma Program Medical Terminology and Anatomy (MTA) course is designed for anyone wishing to pursue a career in the healthcare field. Taught in an easy to understand format, the student will be guided through a series of audio/video presentations using colorful animation and real life examples and is intended for those with little to no background or education in Medical Terminology and Anatomy. The instructor lectures as if in a physical classroom setting while the student follows along with the material provided. Moreover, while the course is completed entirely online it is designed to be taken in a disciplined fashion. A Faculty Advisor is available for questions. The Faculty Advisor is in charge of making sure all students complete their weekly lessons and are able to retain the information. This course also includes the use of medical records, laboratory and operative reports to achieve the level of understanding needed as a Certified Coder, Billing Specialist or Front Office Specialist. This online 24/7 diploma class is the only national medical terminology/anatomy course of its kind as this has been developed and is maintained by PHIA - Professional Healthcare Institute of America. 16 Fundamentals of Billing & Coding (FOBC) Diploma Program This fundamentals diploma course is designed for those individuals who want to learn the basics of health insurance billing and coding. The student will be introduced to basic billing/coding guidelines, the process of completing claim forms and correct billing/coding for services and procedures to receive maximum reimbursement from the patient s insurance carrier. 20 Certified Coding Professional (CCP) Certification Program This comprehensive certification course will prepare the student for our national Certified Coding Professional (CCP) exam. The course will increase the experienced coder s knowledge of medical insurance coding as well as educate the non-experienced coder. A Certified Coding Professional (CCP) is directly involved in the correct assignment and coding of all procedures and services performed by the physician/provider. The CCP certification is a most valued tool in complying with correct coding, auditing and Fraud and Abuse issues. This online 24/7 certification class is the only national Certified Physician Coding course of its kind as this has been developed and is maintained by PHIA - Professional Healthcare Institute of America. This 19 week course is available on-line in an audio/video streamed format. Here is how it works: The student listens to the lecture while watching the animated full-color format. When prompted by the instructor, the student follows along with the written material and completes exercises as if they were sitting in a physical classroom. Students may go back and review a lesson as many times as is needed in order to fully understand it. Students must complete assignments within the week and successfully pass a quiz in order to move on to the next week s lesson. Tests are graded immediately and you may view your student grade report any time. Each student will be assigned to a Faculty Advisor who is certified in coding for additional help if needed and to make sure the student is keeping up with the class. Prerequisites: Two letters of recommendation required. High School Diploma or GED Minimum of two years actual medical coding experience OR Completion of the Medical Terminology/Anatomy and Fundamentals of Billing & Coding courses* Experienced students can opt to test out of the Medical Terminology/Anatomy and Fundamentals of Billing and Coding course before going in to the FOBC course. A score of 75% or greater is required. RN s are not required to test out of the MTA course before going in to the 20

The certification exam must be taken at a licensed proctoring facility in your area. You will need to make arrangements to sit for your certification examination with a licensed proctoring facility in your area (i.e., Library, Local Medical Society, etc.) and most will do this for free or nominal fee. Please notify your faculty advisor at PHIA once a site has been secured and you will be provided with a form entitled Certification Examination Guidelines for Out of State Students. This will need to be completed by your proctor and mailed/faxed back to your faculty advisor for processing. Once the 21

22 information on the form has been verified by PHIA the exam will be sent directly to the proctor, complete with instructions.
