Dr. Geoff Cuvelier MD FRCPC Pediatric Oncologist Dr. Cuvelier is a graduate of the Faculty of Medicine, University of Manitoba, and received undergraduate degrees in microbiology and sociology from the same institution. He trained in pediatrics in Edmonton and recently completed his post-graduate work in pediatric hematology-oncology with a specialization in bone marrow transplant (BMT) at the University of British Columbia s Children s Hospital. Dr. Cuvelier enhanced his clinical experience in pediatric oncology by serving as a pediatric intensive care transport physician at both Stollery Children s Hospital in Edmonton and BC Children s Hospital in Vancouver. He is a Fellow of the Royal College of Physicians and Surgeons of Canada (2005). Dr. Cuvelier s main clinical and research interest is in pediatric bone marrow and stem cell transplantation. He is currently lead investigator in a major clinical trial of megestrol acetate as an appetite stimulant in malnourished children with cancer. He is co-author of a recent study published in Blood defining an interesting new biomarker for chronic graft versus host disease, a problem difficult to manage in pediatric BMT patients.

Dr. Rajat Kumar MBBS MD FRCP (London) FRCP (Edin) Hematologist Dr. Kumar in medicine in 1976 (Delhi, India), completed his internal medicine training and an MD (PhD equivalent) in 1981. He then joined the Indian Medical Corps and served for many years as a Consulting Specialist in internal medicine and hematology. Experience abroad included training in hematology and internal medicine at Guy s Teaching Hospital, London, UK, and Princess Margaret Hospital in Toronto. In 2003, Dr. Kumar was appointed Professor of Hematology at the prestigious All India Institute of Medical Sciences, India s most advanced medical institution. He established a Bone Marrow Transplant Program and recently was the Clinical Head of the Department. A noted educator and researcher who has published widely and medical administrator, Dr. Kumar was elected a Fellow of both the Royal College of Physicians, London and Edinburgh. He has served as Vice-President of the Indian Society of Hematology and Transfusion Medicine, and on the Advisory Boards of several leading medical journals in India.

Dr. Ethan Lyn BA MB BChir FRCR Radiation Oncologist Dr. Lyn graduated in medicine (MB BChir) in 1982 from the University of Cambridge, England. Following training in internal medicine and certification (MRCP), he undertook extensive training in clinical oncology at the renowned Mount Vernon Hospital and Cancer Centre, London, England. As a consultant and senior lecturer since 1996 at the Mount Vernon Hospital, he played a key role in developing accelerated radiation therapy methods (CHART) to improve survival rates in cancer and has been experimenting with novel methods to enhance precise targeting of radiation therapy. He has presented his work at numerous national and international meetings, implemented new programs to provide cancer care outside the tertiary centres much like Manitoba s Community Cancer Program and participated in specialty training and many audit committees to improve quality of cancer care.

Dr. Ade Olujohungbe MBBS MD (UK) FRCP (UK) FRCPath (UK) Hematologist After graduating from Ibadan, Nigeria, Dr. Olujohungbe moved to the world renowned Royal Postgraduate Medical School in London, UK. He trained at many of England s top institutes in London, Manchester and Birmingham and completed a postgraduate doctorate MD (PhD equivalent) in immunology in 1999 at the University of Birmingham. His most recent position was consultant hematologist at Liverpool s University Hospital, where, in addition to his clinical duties, he was deeply involved the training of undergraduates and residents. He is a Fellow of both the Royal College of Pathologists and the Royal College of Physicians (London). An internationally recognized expert on sickle cell anemia, he chaired a national committee to develop standards of care, work praised by Prime Minister Gordon Brown. He is a contributor to and reviewer for specialty hematology journals, chaired numerous guideline and audit committees, published many peer-reviewed articles and recently a book on sickle cell anemia.

Dr. Marshall Pitz MHSc MD FRCPC Medical Oncologist Dr. Pitz joins CancerCare Manitoba from the Johns Hopkins School of Medicine in Baltimore, where he has recently completed a Masters degree in Health Science. He is a graduate of the University of Manitoba, where he received his Doctor of Medicine in 2002, before going on to specialize in internal medicine and medical oncology and was the recipient of several awards. Dr. Pitz became a Fellow of the Royal College of Physicians and Surgeons of Canada (FRCPC) in 2006. His current research focus is in the outcomes of patients with cancer. He has been working on a population-based analysis of how patients with lung cancer are treated in Manitoba, and if the treatments are improving their survival with the disease. Since returning to Manitoba, he has started two additional epidemiological research projects - one looking at the how patients treated with trastuzumab (herceptin) are doing, and to examine how the drug is used in Manitoba. The other is looking at patients with brain tumours, to confirm that patients treated here do better than the published literature. He has had research papers published in a number of leading journals, including Clinical Gastroenterology and Hepatology, the American Journal of Gastroenterology and Internal Medicine Journal. Dr. Pitz has been a member of the Manitoba Medical Associations Ethics Committee since 2003.

Dr. Donna Wall BSc MD Pediatric Oncologist Dr. Wall is a graduate of the Faculty of Medicine, University of Manitoba (1981). She did post graduate work at various prestigious institutions in the American Northeast, including Columbia Presbyterian Medical Center, Tufts University and Harvard Medical School before obtaining her first academic position at Washington University, St. Louis, Missouri in 1988. She is returning to Manitoba from the University of Texas, where she was Professor of Clinical Pediatrics and Director of Pediatric Hematology, Oncology and Transplant Program at the Texas Transplant Institute, Methodist Children s Hospital. Dr. Wall is one of North America s leading experts on cord blood banking and transplantation. She has been highly successful at obtaining research support for her work, as is evidenced by the 22 clinical trials in which she has participated or served as principal investigator. Dr. Wall has published over 60 research papers and book chapters in five textbooks on pediatric oncology and transplantation. She is a highly soughtafter speaker at conferences and symposia around the continent.

Dr. Debrah Wirtzfeld MSc MD FRCSC FACS Surgical Oncologist Dr. Wirtzfeld s primary area of clinical interest is colorectal cancer, with specific emphasis on management and standardization of treatment. She is a graduate of the Faculty of Medicine, University of Calgary. She has recently completed a Masters Degree in clinical epidemiology at Memorial University in Newfoundland. Dr. Wirtzfeld s most recent position was Associate Professor of Surgery and Clinical Genetics at Memorial University, where she also served as Director of the General Surgery Residency Research and Education Committee. She is a Fellow of the Royal College of Surgeons of Canada (FRCSC) and the American College of Surgeons (FACS) and is also active in the Association of Women Surgeons. Among Dr. Wirtzfeld s current research interests are the genetics of gastric cancer and the development of clinical practice guidelines. She currently holds a major Canadian Institutes of Health Research grant (co-investigator) to perform interdisciplinary research on the determinants and impact of colorectal cancer.
