What is ethics? Medical ethics is not an abstract subject. It is demonstrated by the a^tudes, thought and behaviour of healthcare professionals Going beyond the legal and deontology framework as a base, the objecmve is to determine what theoremcal referenmals are applied in pracmce, and how these interelate, potenmally creamng ethical tensions and conflicts. 4

Medical ethics is a permanent exercise in thought. For every professional decision, it is a duty to be aware about what is due to scienmfic knowledge, beliefs, or experience. The ulmme aim being more to have a respecdul a^tude towards others rather than the applicamon of medical knowledge, without renouncing values. 5

What is taught? In the first year of medical training : 1 MulM- disciplinary approach of the human being : spiritual, physical, legal 2 Philosophy of science and epistemology 3 History and sociology of health 4 Legal medicine, medical ethics and medical law (secret, reponsibility, beginning of life, end of life) 6

This programme has been introduced namonally since 2010. The objecmve is to increase medical students awareness to non scienmfic aspects of medical pracmce from the start of their training. 7

Master M1 «menmon éthique» UE 1 : IniMaMon to research methods in medical ethics. ObjecMve: students must acquire the ability to: Understand the research objecmves in medical ethics Obtain the tools necessary for concepmon of ethics research 8

UE 2 : Ethics in biomedical research. ProtecMon of persons involved in medical research Fundamental principles of biomedical research History of research, scienmfic, industrial and sociological issues, different aspects of protecmon of human beings in medical research RegulaMons, informamon, consent.. 9

UE 3 : Ethics of clinical pracmce and the pament- carer relamonship Consent, autonomy PaMent- carer relamonship Care and insmtumons : the case of psychiatry Technological progress and the representamon of the human body 10

UE 4 : Ethics of clinical pracmce and the pament- carer relamonship (2) In this second part, students are confronted with different types of situamons and acquire a solid understanding how to use these concepts in extreme medical situamons: violence, abormon, end of life, death 11

UE 5 : introducmon to scienmfic integrity, ethical and scienmfic quality. ObjecMves : biomedical research study with respect to conflicts of interest, integrity, the influence of medical ethics to medical research : Integrity and science, integrity and intellectual property, falsificamon, errors, malpracmce, ethical quality of publicamons 12

The teaching is organised in several forms: Conferences Seminars with a chairman and discussions Research seminars : students present their own work followed by discussion with the teachers and other students. 13

Master 1 : validamon Wri=en exams are used to evaluate each UE. Students must carry out their own research subject and produce a report (wri=en and oral) 14

Master M2 : research in medical ethics In depth analysis of ethical theories. Use of research tools in medical ethics. Many small group sessions to help students in the elaboramon of their projects 15

M2 : UE 3 : ethics and new biotechnologies Students study new biotechnologies to enable them to understand the issues in terms of the benefit they can bring and also the quesmons of individual freedom, safety and protecmon of persons in medical and research pracmce. Medically assisted procreamon, predicmve genemcs, research using human body parts and products, organ transplantamon.. 18

M2 : UE 4 : ethics and medical networks Now organizamon of the health care system implies new quesmons, new pracmce. The interacmon between hospital and non- hospital pracmonners Consequences regarding access to care Different types of networks are presented and studied. 19

M2 : UE 5 : relamonship between the JusMce and medicine; ethics and forensic medical examinamon, ethics and compensamon. In forensic medicine, the JusMce and medicine are concerned with the same populamon, but with different aims. Understanding the different points of view is necessary. But being aware of all the issues of such a confrontamon is even more necessary. Subjects treated in this UE are : deontology and ethics; violence and medicine, medical responsibilty, medical accidents and compensamon 20

M2 UE 6 : genemc counseling Decision making, the context of increasing demand for predicmon, the nomon of normality, the risk of eugenism, the social issues of genemc predicmon. 21

M2 : UE 7 : decision making and end of life This is a very sensimve topic; In this UE : relevance of Advance DirecMves, mulm- disciplinary college for decision of end of care; therapeumc obsmnacy; place of death in medical pracmce 22

M2 : UE 8 : ethics, informamon, and media, ethics and scienmfic communicamon The aim is the sharing of knowledge. It is necessary to have a crimcal a^tude towards publicamons, communicamons, different means of conveying informamon, crimcal analysis of the impact and effect of publicamons; Programs of vulgarisamon, use of web sites in doctor- pament relamon- ship. 23
