The goal of the NPCRU is to provide leadership, mentorship and support for professors and graduate students pursuing excellence in palliative care research and education. School of Nursing Faculty University of Ottawa site Dr. Susan Brajtman RN PhD Dr. Frances Fothergill Bourbonnais RN PhD Dr. Frances Legault RN PhD Dr. Christine McPherson RN PhD Algonquin College site Valerie Fiset RN MScN La Cité collégiale site Diane Alain RN MEd Dr. Susan Brajtman RN PhD Dr. Susan Brajtman is an Associate Professor in the School of Nursing in the University of Ottawa. She is a graduate of the Royal Victoria Hospital School of Nursing, McGill University, and De Montfort University in England. From 1984 till 2002 she lived in Israel, and her clinical experience involved both community health nursing (on a kibbutz) and clinical and administrative experience in palliative care as the head nurse of the Palliative Care Unit in Jerusalem, Israel. Her research interests include end-of-life delirium, enhancing education in endof- life care, and interprofessional education and practice. Dr. Frances Fothergill-Bourbonnais RN PhD Dr. Frances Fothergill-Bourbonnais is a full professor in the School of Nursing, University of Ottawa. She joined the University in 1976 and teaches at both the undergraduate and graduate level. The focus of her teaching has been in the area of life threatening and complex health problems such as trauma and HIV/AIDS and the requirements for palliative care. Her research interests include pain and symptom assessment for patients with cancer, projects related to patients with HIV/AIDS such as the experience of pain and managing multiple drug therapies as well as various aspects of critical care nursing. She has also conducted studies examining learning needs of nursing students and teachers.

2 2 Dr. Frances Legault RN PhD Dr. Legault is an Assistant Professor at the University of Ottawa, School of Nursing with teaching responsibilities in community health and global health. She holds a Masters of Science in Community Health Nursing and a PhD in Nursing. Her program of research is based on the evaluation of community-based models for palliative care services. Dr. Legault also holds a joint appointment with the Great Lakes University of Kisumu in Kenya and collaborates in global health initiatives to address the complexities of poverty and health, specifically in relation to the HIV/AIDS crisis, and to influence health policy. Educational initiatives include building capacity for nursing research and curriculum development through consultation and graduate student supervision. Dr. Christine McPherson RN PhD Dr. McPherson is a health psychologist and registered nurse who acquired her Ph.D. from the Institute of Palliative Care and Policy at King's College, London (UK). She is an Assistant Professor in the School of Nursing where she teaches research methods at the undergraduate, Post-RN and graduate levels. Dr. McPherson is involved in student supervision at the doctoral and masters level. Her main research interests include symptom perception by family caregivers involved in symptom assessment and management, or the evaluation of care. In addition to psychosocial issues faced by individuals with advanced disease, she is currently engaged in funded research projects examining patients feelings of being a burden to others. Valerie Fiset RN MScN Valerie Fiset completed her undergraduate degree in nursing at Queen s University, and her Master of Science in Nursing degree at the University of Ottawa. For her Master's thesis she developed and evaluated a decision aid for patients with advanced lung cancer making the decision about chemotherapy. She has held positions in advanced practice nursing, management, education and research. She is now a full-time faculty member at Algonquin College, teaching and coordinating in the Collaborative Bachelor of Science in Nursing Program with the University of Ottawa. Her interests include decision support, palliative care nursing and nursing education. Diane Alain RN MEd Diane Alain received her nursing diploma from the University of Montreal and worked in a University Hospital in Montréal. She worked in oncology and began teaching early in her career. She taught at Algonquin College, La Cité collégiale and in the collaborative program with the University of Ottawa. She received her Masters in Education degree from the University of Québec in Outaouais. Her research interests involve collaboration between the teacher and the student in the learning experience, and nursing education in end-of -life care.

3 3 Faculty Research Initiatives Nursing education in EOLC-students and educators Interprofessional education and practice in EOLC - faculty development workshops and on-line resources End -of -life delirium Pain management Psychosocial issues facing individuals with advanced disease Symptom assessment and management by family caregivers Continuity of care, place of care, and place of death Palliative care in the global health context Educational Initiatives HSS Exploring Death and Dying through Literature This interprofessional course examines concepts of suffering and issues relevant to death and to the care of the dying as reflected in works of literature. Students explore different professional perspectives of these concepts and issues, and relate them to socio-economic, political and cultural factors. The course provides a forum for studying professionalism, professional ethics and professional culture in seminar format. NSG 4302 Post RN: Palliative Care Nursing This course examines the principles of palliation as they apply to the nursing care of the terminally ill patient and his/her family. Adopting a "quality-of-life" philosophy, emphasis is placed on nursing interventions that promote pain and symptom control. In addition, topics relevant to end of life care involving the psychological, spiritual, social and cultural dimensions of the individual and family are discussed. NEW! Interprofessional EOLC Undergraduate course: January 2010 This course provides an introduction to care of the terminally ill through an understanding of pain and symptom control and examination of bereavement, suffering, ethical, legal, cultural and decision- making issues. Students will have the opportunity to explore different professional perspectives, communication skills and the key elements of collaborative person-centred practice. NEW! Graduate Interprofessional EOLC course: Fall 2009 This course examines palliative/end-of- life care philosophy and practice implemented across the lifespan and diverse health settings. Different professional perspectives will provide a forum for the critical examination of

4 4 theory, research, practice and policy issues related to the care of individuals and families facing a life threatening illness. Students will explore concepts related to death, dying, bereavement, interprofessional collaboration, health care systems, culture and society. Graduate Students Over the last several years there has been a significant increase in the number of graduate students conducting research in palliative care/eolc. Examples of past and current research topics include: nurses experiences providing care for patients who die in the emergency room; the experience of intensive care nurses withdrawing life support, the experience of oncology nurses who provide bereavement support, the transition from home to a palliative care unit, women s decision making needs related to treatment for recurrent ovarian cancer, Canadian forces military officers and moral distress; palliative care services utilization and place of death, decision support related to place of end-of-life care and exploration of the experience of end-of-life delirium..
