I. PLANNING AND ASSESSMENT The guidance counselor will assist the principal, faculty, and staff with the preparation of student schedules to enhance student learning. The guidance counselor will work with the principal, faculty, and staff in program planning, coordination of services, and consultation. The guidance counselor will have an understanding of the social, emotional, physical, and academic characteristics of learners at the specific grade levels. The guidance counselor will be responsible for coordinating the school-wide testing program. The guidance counselor will analyze test data and convey the results of the data analysis to the principal, teachers, students, and parents in an effort to improve student learning. II. GUIDANCE AND COUNSELING SERVICES The guidance counselor will provide academic guidance by assisting students in the acquisition of knowledge required to make curricular choices, to plan a program of studies, interpret academic testing, seek post-secondary academic opportunities, and make the assistance available to parents. The guidance counselor will provide career guidance that helps students to acquire information and plan action about work, jobs, apprenticeships, and post-secondary educational and career opportunities. 2
The guidance counselor will provide personal, social, classroom and academic counseling that assists students in developing an understanding of themselves, the rights and needs of others, and to define individual goals, reflecting their interests, abilities and aptitudes. III. SAFETY AND LEARNING ENVIRONMENT The guidance counselor will work within the school s discipline policy to foster a safe and positive learning environment for students and staff. The guidance counselor will create a supportive atmosphere for all students that is conducive to meeting their counseling needs. Meets Expectation The guidance counselor will provide information concerning the availability of programs offered by various local and governmental agencies relating to health, counseling, and special services as needed and/or requested. IV. COMMUNICATION AND COMMUNITY RELATIONS The guidance counselor will use effective verbal, nonverbal, and media communication techniques to foster positive interactions in the classroom and school. The guidance counselor will forge partnerships with families to promote student emotional well-being and learning at home and at school. 3
The guidance counselor will work collaboratively with staff, families, and community resources to support the success of a diverse student population. V. PROFESSIONALISM The guidance counselor will model professional and ethical standards as well as personal integrity in all interactions. The guidance counselor will take responsibility for and participate in a meaningful and continuous process of professional development that results in the enhancement of student learning. The guidance counselor will work in a collegial and collaborative manner with peers, school personnel, and the community to promote and support student learning.
