Program of Study Upper-division Nursing coursework required for the major will be delivered to the cohort by Appalachian. Community colleges offer lower-division courses; therefore Appalachian will normally deliver only required upper-division courses to the cohort. Lower-division coursework (Required Core, cognate, elective courses) transfers from a community college or other accredited institution. It is the student s responsibility to obtain lower division coursework required for the BSN degree, and complete it before the last term of the program.

Composition of Credit Hours Semester hours required for graduation (RN-BSN program requires 124) 64 semester hours of lowerdivision coursework are transferred into the program: RN-BSN Required Core: 44 sh Nursing Cognate Courses: 18 sh (Some Cognate courses may also count as part of the Required Core) Elective Credits: to reach 64 sh of transfer credit 30 SH of upper-division Nursing courses are delivered in the Appalachian RN-BSN program 30 SH of Appalachian credit will be awarded upon successful completion of the third term of the program for prior learning and clinical competencies

RN-BSN Required Core (44 SH) The RN-BSN Required Core should be completed at a community college or other accredited school, preferably before entering a cohort, or before the last term of the program: English Composition (6 SH) Two English Composition Courses Humanities/Fine Arts (12 SH) One literature course required One fine arts course required Two additional courses from: art, dance, drama, foreign language, music, literature, interdisciplinary humanities, philosophy, and religion

RN-BSN Required Core (continued) Social/Behavioral Sciences (12 SH) One history course An introductory course in sociology An introductory course in psychology An additional course from: anthropology, economics, geography, history, political science, psychology, sociology Mathematics (6 SH) Introductory mathematics course (survey, college algebra, trigonometry, calculus, etc.) Introductory statistics course (does not have to be math prefix) Natural Sciences (8 SH) Human Anatomy and Physiology with Lab

Nursing Cognate Courses (18 SH) Human Anatomy & Physiology*- if not taken as part of the Required Core in Natural Sciences (8 SH) Microbiology with Lab (4 SH) Developmental Psychology or Human Growth and Development*- if not taken as part of the Required Core in Social/Behavioral Sciences, additional course section (3 SH) Statistics* - if not taken as part of the Required Core in Mathematics (3 SH) *These cognate courses may also count as part of the Required Core, and additional hours needed are made up in General Electives to total the 124 sh required for the BSN degree.

Elective Course Requirements The BSN degree requires 124 semester hours. If a student would have fewer than 124 hours on record after completing all other degree requirements (Required Core, cognates, major Nursing courses), the remaining credit hours must be obtained by taking general elective courses that are transferable to Appalachian. (Assumes that 30 sh of Appalachian credit to be awarded is counted toward total semester hours.) Students should ensure that planned elective courses are transferable to Appalachian before registering for the classes. Clinical Hours Required The following courses have clinical hour components: NUR 4021 Nursing Care of Communities (3 rd Term) 30 clinical hours NUR 4029 Nursing Leadership & Mgmt. (3 rd Term) 30 clinical hours NUR 4032 Professional Nursing Synthesis (4 th Term) 120 clinical hours (Clinical sites will be located within the state of North Carolina)

DELIVERY OF INSTRUCTION Courses will be offered only ONCE to each cohort; there is a precise schedule for delivery of Nursing courses, and students must take courses as they are made available. (For any Nursing courses not satisfactorily completed, consult your academic advisor) Follow Appalachian s academic calendar, and any specific instructions provided by your professor Any required meetings will be scheduled by the instructor of the course Follow syllabus for course structure/time frame As noted above, some Nursing courses involve clinical hours

Required Orientation Session The Nursing Department has planned an orientation session to take place on the Appalachian campus in Boone. The orientation session is usually scheduled approximately a week before the beginning of classes. (If you cannot attend the orientation session, please contact the program manager.)

Transfer/Lower-division Coursework It is the student s responsibility to identify, register for, and complete lower division coursework for the BSN degree before the last term of the program (Required Core, Nursing cognate courses, and any necessary elective credits) Concurrent enrollment at Appalachian and a NC community college or other accredited institution is allowed during the first three terms of the RN-BSN program Grades for lower-division coursework do not transfer (they do not affect the Appalachian GPA); only courses & credit hours transfer. A grade of C (2.0) or higher must be maintained on all coursework to be considered for transfer to Appalachian Official transcripts of transfer work completed must be sent to the Office of Extension & Distance Education at the end of each semester

REGISTRATION FOR APPALACHIAN COURSES Registration instructions for Fall Semester are included with your orientation materials. Registration should be completed before classes begin. A student must be registered for classes by the end of the drop/add period at the beginning of every semester, or financial aid will be cancelled. Billing for Tuition and Fees After you have registered for classes, tuition and fee charges will be posted to your Appalnet account. Bills will be emailed to official student email accounts (@ appstate.edu) according to the schedule at: http://www.studentaccounts.appstate.edu Important Dates Link NOTE: NO PAPER BILLS WILL BE MAILED Students will be able to view and print bills via Appalnet. FINANCIAL AID Federal financial aid is available for students who qualify. The free financial aid form, FAFSA, is used: www.fafsa.ed.gov Appalachian State University s Financial Aid Office: 800-355-4084 ext 2190 www.financialaid.appstate.edu Consortium Agreement : Students who take required lower-level courses through a community college should report those hours for financial aid via a Consortium Agreement form. See Consortium Agreement for details. In most cases, a student must be enrolled in at least six semester hours of credit in order to receive financial aid. (A student must be enrolled in at least one semester hour of Appalachian credit in a given semester to use the consortium agreement.)

FINANCIAL AID (Continued) Official community college transcripts MUST be submitted promptly at the end of every semester in which financial aid is received for community college coursework listed on the Consortium Agreement, to prevent pay-back of funds. (Refer to the Consortium Agreement for details.) A student must be registered for classes by the end of the drop/add period at the beginning of every semester, or financial aid will be cancelled. Refer to the academic calendar for drop/add dates at: www.registrar.appstate.edu If a student accumulates 150% of the hours required for the degree (this would be approximately 186 sh, since 124 sh are required for the BSN degree) during the program, financial aid eligibility could be affected. Please consult Financial Aid if you will approach having 186 sh on record at Appalachian at any point during the RN-BSN program.

GRADUATION Appalachian s commencement takes place each May and December. On-campus and Distance Education students graduate together on the Boone campus. (Attendance at the graduation ceremony is optional. If you do not participate, you must still apply for graduation.) Students must apply for graduation early in the semester in which they plan to graduate. (Graduation information is available at registrar.appstate.edu) Graduation for this cohort is planned for December 2013.
