3 EXPECTATIONS OF STUDENTS RN to BSN Cohort Students Should pursue this program with ENTHUSIASM & PROFESSIONALISM Should be prepared to meet the rigors of college courses. 5 Program of Study Upper-division Nursing coursework required for the major will be delivered to the cohort by Appalachian. Community colleges offer lower-division courses; therefore Appalachian will normally deliver only required upper-division courses to the cohort. Lower-division coursework (general education, cognate, elective courses) transfers from a community college or other accredited institution. It is the student s responsibility to obtain lower division coursework required for the BSN degree, and complete it before the last term of the program.
6 Composition of Credit Hours Semester hours required for graduation (RN-BSN program requires 124) 64 semester hours (sh) of lowerdivision coursework are transferred into the program: General Ed. Courses: sh Nursing Cognate Courses: 18 sh Elective Credits: to reach 64 sh of transfer credit (and 124 sh required for graduation) 30 SH of upper-division Nursing courses delivered in the Appalachian RN-BSN program 30 SH of Appalachian credit will be awarded upon successful completion of the third term of the program for prior learning

8 General Education Requirements General Education requirements are to be completed outside the cohort program (either before entering the cohort or before the last term of the program), by one of the following methods: Transfer coursework applied to Appalachian s General Education requirements on a course by course basis CAA/44 sh community college core (transfer program) AA (Associate of Arts degree) AS (Associate of Science degree) Note: The AAS (Associate in Applied Science) alone will not automatically meet the general education requirements; individual courses are reviewed for transfer to Appalachian
9 Nursing Cognate Courses Microbiology BIO 170, 175, 275, or another transferable microbiology course Developmental PSY 241 or another transferable Psychology Developmental Psy. or Human Growth and Development course Statistics MAT 151+A or 155+A or another transferable statistics course Choose additional elective hours to meet cognate requirement of 18 semester hours

11 Elective Course Requirements After completing all general education, cognate, and major courses, students must complete any of the remaining 124 semester hours required for graduation with elective courses. Note that 2 sh of electives outside the major discipline are required for the BSN degree. Students should ensure that planned elective courses are transferable to Appalachian before registering for the classes. Transferability may be checked at:

13 DELIVERY OF INSTRUCTION Follow Appalachian s academic calendar, and any specific instructions provided by your professor Courses will be offered only ONCE to each cohort; there is a precise schedule for delivery of Nursing courses, and students must take courses as they are made available. (For any Nursing courses not satisfactorily completed, consult your academic advisor) Faculty travel to the site Courses typically meet one day per week, in afternoon and evening hours Web-based coursework
14 REQUIRED GRADES A minimum grade of C or higher is required in each nursing course before proceeding to the next nursing course; however, an overall GPA of 2.5 is required in the nursing courses at the end of the junior year, and every semester thereafter. A cumulative GPA of 2.5 or higher is required. A minimum grade of C (2.0) is required in each cognate course. C- is not adequate. Note: The RN-BSN program offers 30 sh of coursework, and students are not eligible for graduation with honors a minimum of 48 sh is required.
15 Other Requirements RN-BSN students must maintain an unrestricted, unencumbered, current RN license to practice in North Carolina. Only one nursing course may be repeated (one time) during matriculation through the nursing curriculum. Other academic regulations and policies should be reviewed at: catalogs tab. 17 Transfer/Lower-division Coursework It is the student s responsibility to identify, register for and complete lower division coursework for the BSN degree before the last term of the program (General Ed. courses, Nursing cognate courses, and any necessary elective credits) Concurrent enrollment at Appalachian and a community college is allowed during this program Community college grades do not transfer; only courses & hours. However, a grade of C or higher must be maintained on transfer coursework for sh to count toward graduation Official transcripts of new transfer work must be sent to the program manager at Extension & Distance Ed. at the end of each semester
18 RESOURCES Library materials and resources are available electronically, through the mail, and on-site. An Appalachian ID card is required for access to on-campus library materials. Appalachian Distance Learning Library Services: Appalachian s student identification cards will be created and mailed to you. An ID card is required for access to oncampus library materials. A student financial account and student computer account will be assigned to you. Student Accounts Office: ext 2113, and AppalNet/Technical Support: ext 6266.

30 APPALACHIAN S OFF-CAMPUS PROGRAM Appalachian has delivered its courses off-campus since the early 1950 s. In 1999, Appalachian and ten regional community colleges joined to form the Appalachian Learning Alliance. 31 REGISTRATION FOR APPALACHIAN COURSES Registration for Spring Semester 2010 are in your orientation packet. You must have been admitted by the Department of Nursing to the RN-BSN program and have received a user name and password in order to register. For all subsequent semesters, you will enroll in cohort courses via Appalachian s student portal: - AppalNet. Registration information and instructions will be provided each semester by Appalachian .
32 COSTS Tuition & Fees Academic Year: $91.25 per semester hour (in-state student) $ per semester hour (out-of-state student) Tuition and fees are set annually, and modest annual increases can be expected. After your registration has been processed, a bill will be mailed to your permanent address with instructions for payment. You may view your student account status on Appalnet. Each course will vary in requirements for textbooks, etc. Textbook information will be provided by the Department of Nursing
33 FINANCIAL AID Federal financial aid is available for students who qualify. The free financial aid form FAFSA is used; FED-AID For more information about financial aid, see the College Foundation of North Carolina website at: Appalachian State University s Financial Aid Office: ext Appalachian RN-BSN programs typically provide half-time benefits. Students who take required lower-level courses through a community college will report those hours for financial aid via a Consortium Agreement form.
34 GRADUATION Appalachian s commencement occurs each May and December. On- and off-campus students graduate together on the Boone campus. Students must apply for graduation early in the semester in which they plan to graduate. (Graduation information will be provided by the Registrar s Office.) This cohort is expected to graduate in May 2011
