The Data Challenge Complexity of the Landscape Most firms are faced with complex data, business and technology landscapes. Organisations are highly fragmented with limited overall clarity on how it all hangs together Visibility of the Journey" Data travels a long way through the business. It is chopped-up, mixed, filtered and collated on its way. Firms need sight of that business journey and how the data is used along the way in order to control and improve things Collaboration" Businesses operate in silos and mostly rely on unstructured and non-collaborative tools to capture and share understanding. Specialist tools serve only specialists Structural need for broader understanding & better collaboration Diaku 2015 4

Current Understanding & Collaboration Toolkit Large organisations are complex, everchanging 1 & operated by people with a wide 2 variety of skillsets & responsibilities. Local knowledge of the business exists...??? Social platforms aid collaboration but lack structure to provide actionable understanding Today s workforce operates with a partial, disjointed view of the organisation. 3...but is isolated & hard to find 6? 5 Tactical solutions are a business reality but hidden from view? 4 Traditional tools have silo focus, require specialist skills & are used by a narrow audience Diaku 2015 5

Impacts of Poor Understanding & Alignment Costs & Revenue Unnecessary duplication & complexity Proliferation of workarounds & manual activity Poor customer service Missed opportunities Reduced competitiveness Change & Agility Slow time-to-market Inability to react to internal or external pressures Unintended consequences when implementing change Increased rate of failure in business transformation Control & Compliance Increase in mistakes & issues Compliance & regulatory failures Challenge in meeting strategic objectives Poor information in MI leading to poor business decisions The first step in problem solving is understanding Diaku 2015 6

Data Governance = Understanding & Collaboration Data governance is the discipline of bringing people together to promote responsible and aligned methods of working with data The discipline often focuses purely on the formal aspects - roles, definitions, policies etc. While important, these elements do not help identify nor quantify the data challenges faced by the business, and often struggles to support their resolution. It is essential to understand how the business uses its data Data governance traditionally takes a policing approach to data management. Modern data governance brings people into the model, let them be truly part of the data governance community by empowering them contribute to their understanding. Data cannot be fixed purely by data people. To make a difference data governance needs to excite and engage business people, change people, and technology people to come together and collaborate. Data will not get better by repeating old patterns. The only way out is through it - together! Diaku 2015 10
