Preface This document describes how to set up toll-free linking, which provides users with access to articles referenced from publications to which the user has access. Intended Audience This document is intended for publisher administrators. Prerequisite Knowledge This document assumes familiarity with the Literatum Admin Tool, content slices, licenses, and metadata. Preface 4
Chapter 1. Introduction Toll-free linking grants access to articles referenced by another article to which a user has full-text access. When a user clicks one of the links in an article s references, access to the referenced article is provided toll free under the following conditions: The journals for the original article and the referenced article are both members of the same toll-free linking cluster. The Toll-Free Linking parameter of the license granting the user access to the original article is set to Yes. The user accesses the referenced article by clicking on its link in the original article s References section. Figure 1.1. Link in article s References section Typically, an indication that access is provided by toll-free linking is displayed on the referenced article s page. Introduction 5

Chapter 2. Setting Up Toll-Free Linking In general, the following steps are required to set up toll-free linking: 1. Create a parent category with the code tollfreelinking (Section 2.1). 2. Set up at least one toll-free linking child category, containing the journals among which tollfree linking is provided (Section 2.2). 3. Enable toll-free linking on the appropriate offers and/or licenses (Section 2.3). 2.1. Create the Toll-Free Linking Parent Category Toll-free linking requires one parent category with the code tollfreelinking. If this category does not already exist, create it (see Chapter 3). 2.2. Create Toll-Free Linking Clusters Create one toll-free linking cluster for each group of publications that you want to provide tollfree linking to each other. For example, if you want articles in a particular journal to provide tollfree linking to other articles in that journal, the toll-free linking cluster would contain that single journal. If you want all publications on the website to provide toll-free linking to each other, the toll-free linking cluster would contain all publications on the website. A toll-free linking cluster consists of the following: A child category of the tollfreelinking category The publications that are included in the cluster added as members of the child category You can create new categories for toll-free linking clusters, or use existing categories. To set up a toll-free linking cluster: 1. Create a child category for the toll-free linking cluster if it does not already exist (refer to the Metadata User Guide). 2. Add the child category to the Subcategories panel of the tollfreelinking parent category. 3. Add journals to the toll-free linking child category using one or both of the following methods: Add journals to the child category s Publications panel. Add categories that contain the journals to the child category s Subcategories panel. 2.3. Create Toll-Free Linking Licenses and Offers Enable toll-free linking on particular licenses or offers by setting the Toll-Free Linking parameter to Yes. Setting Up Toll-Free Linking 7

Chapter 3. Toll-Free Linking Example In this example, an administrator sets up the toll-free linking parent category, creates a toll-free linking cluster for chemistry journals, and creates a license for one of the chemistry journals with toll-free linking enabled. 1. Launch the Admin Tool and click the Metadata sidebar button. 2. Create the parent toll-free linking category: a. Click into the Create Publication panel and select Category. b. Enter a title (e.g., Toll Free Linking), enter tollfreelinking in the Code parameter, and click Create. 3. Set up a toll-free linking child category, using the pre-existing Chemistry category. Click into the Subcategories panel of the tollfreelinking category, click Add, search for and select the Chemistry category, and click OK. 4. Click into the Publications panel and check that the journals you want in this cluster have been added. Toll-Free Linking Example 9
5. Create a content slice containing one of the chemistry journals. Toll-Free Linking Example 10
6. Create a license for the chemistry journal. Select Yes for the Toll-Free Linking parameter. With this toll-free linking license, a Paris University user accessing an article in the chemistry journal Lavoisier s Head is granted access to articles it references in any of the other chemistry journals by clicking their entries in the original article s References section. Chapter 4. Toll-Free Linking Reports You can find out how many toll-free linking accesses were made to and/or from a particular journal by running the Toll-Free Linking report in the Content Usage section of the Reports module of the Admin Tool. Refer to the Reports User Guide. Toll-Free Linking Reports 12
