INTERNATIONAL SUMMER SCHOOL RETHINKING RIGHTS IN A PLURAL SOCIETY VENICE Giorgio Cini Foundation, San Giorgio Island SEPTEMBER 6 th -10 th 2010 CONTENTS The new moral lingua franca. That is, the new way in which different cultures communicate their values. This is the compelling expression by which American constitutional scholar Michael Perry has defined human rights. Whether this new lingua franca is accepted benevolently or half-heartedly, the affirmation undeniably carries a lot of truth. There is hardly an area of public interest where rights do not play a primary role. Politics, international relations, economics, even religion and culture are tackled with special consideration to their juridical profile. How can rights and economic development be reconciled? Is there a future for ancient juridical cultures, such as religious ones? What are the true, original rights which developing peoples are waiting to see recognized? Above all, how can a right be distinguished from a claim? What are the criteria for understanding where the promotion of human rights turns into some form of colonialism, however sophisticated (and even more worryingly so)? The Summer School launched by the Studium Generale Marcianum through the newly-born School For Advanced Studies - Society- Economy-Theology (ASSET) intends to deal with the rights issue, precisely because it perceives that today jurisprudence is not to be relegated to one area of life: conversely, it cuts across the whole horizon of social experience. Political and juridical philosophers, constitutional scholars, ministers, and experts in Islamic Law will all contribute to an intense dialogue with the course participants. The aim is not just to illustrate which new frontiers are set before the juridical experience but to respond to one of the major threats of our times. In fact, by pervading the most diverse areas of human action, the law risks oversimplifying its

complexity and weakening its consistency or even its taste. By articulating human relations in terms of rights and duties there is the risks of demeaning them. To find a juridical concept capable of valuing them, as well as perceiving their meaning and protecting it, is a challenge: what is at stake is not only the future of rights but that of the entire human society. METHODOLOGY The Summer School will consist in: - morning lectures, held by a key-note speaker and a discussant and followed by a debate with participants. - afternoon panels devoted to communications WHO CAN PARTICIPATE? The Summer School is conceived as a moment of intellectual exchange and professional training. The initiative is indeed open to: scholars (professors, researchers, post-grade students) Public officers and professionals (primarily in the domain of Justice but also of Education and Health) LANGUAGE: the official languages of the Summer School will be English and Italian.
